I’ll probably design a new one shortly. Just have to get an idea etc.

Oh come on now.. why did they have to fix that last bug? It was always funny to go see a body flying in those melee battles.

    Liam… No.

Bitey – Depending on how many people / bands we have do this…. do you really want to sit there, for the entire time, not doing anything but watching other people play Rock Band for a couple hours? I like the idea, but at the same time, I don’t want to make somebody sit out of doing something else.

I’ll bring it up at the console meeting. Hopefully we can figure out the best system there.

There’s always enough kittens. If not.. well, we’ll just rename it the puppy cannon.

And remember kids, whenever you touch yourself, God kills a kitten.

So blame MS for that ball dropped. Even still, standbying and bridging did not affect LAN based tournaments. Or on-line tournaments, because with video captures, evidence could easily be provided for teams cheating. Bungie did not have the time/capabilities/resources to devote to tweaking the code of Halo 2 to prevent the glitches of BXR/BXB/RRX because they were working on new map content as well as Halo 3. The same could also be true of any production studio that makes any sort of video game. Once they develop one new product and release it, they leave a small team to address issues with the game if there is a great demand to do so, while they start or continue work on another project.

No, you just had to have your cable modem and hit the standy button on it. That’s all. And bridging? You just had to network your Xbox through your PC rather than directly to the modem. PC then ran software to manage IPs and firewalls to leave people in blue / loading screen like a standby would. Bridgers just had the advantage of making one team or selective individuals go into blue loading screen or lag them out entirely.

I think it’s possible to do, we just have to have more people running the console section of the LAN. Oh Malley is great and all but the fact still remains that he is just one guy and can’t do it all by himself. I think we’ll need a volunteer to run it at the LAN kinda of like how matt runs SSBM and Wii Bowling.

But as far as the actual competition goes I really don’t see a reason why all instruments can’t be included. We’ll have to decide on an even difficulty level for it but that’s not too hard. I think an even straight across the board hard difficulty would be fine. People will just have to practice is all :P .

That’s what we pretty much do with Guitar Hero 3, provide a standard difficulty for all to play. And I do have staff to run things this time. There is Shae, our VP you know. Matt got enlisted simply because Shae was sick. Shae did a good job of running the MK64 tournament though. And again, I appoint my own advisors for games to help me decide settings and etc. If we can get a good group of 8, 12, or 16 we can do a mini mock tournament to see how well it would go. File it under possible LAN games and under play testing prospects for the upcoming console meeting.

My only issue is a time constraint. Unless we run it like we did that one Starcraft tournament several LANs ago and simply make it an option of being an all day tournament.

They never fixed standbying or bridging. They pretty much just banned all the modders or at least prevented most of them from accessing the matchmaking playlists. I’m assuming the standby issue and bridging is what you meant by modem pause.

I’ll try to take minutes as well, just in case to vote on something in general. It’d be a good idea to do so just to get in the habit since I have a feeling that our own individual meetings will be just as big and just as important.

It’s hard to patch animation issues. It’s not that they didn’t want to. Same thing with the super bounces in Halo 2, do you think they really had the time and manpower to fix the gaps in geometry that caused that? And then make everyone redownload all the content that’s already on the disc?

Just as a side note, Oh Malley if you are going to vote in things for the LAN then you need some sort of secretary to make minutes for you, I might be wrong about this but I am thinking that you will need approval from either me or Kuros on this, not really sure I need his input. If your just discussing it and then preparing it for the club meeting on what to suggest and vote on there then by all means ignore everything I just said ;)

For the most part, it’s going to be prep for the next general meeting. Most of the talks of next LAN are getting ideas for what we want, be it settings, games, etc. and then we’ll play test them to confirm. As far as the other issues go, I’m letting the console people voice their opinions on them and help straighten things out before the general meeting.

The Halo glitching can be avoided by *surprise* using Halo 3 instead of Halo 2. I know there are enough XBOX360s on campus to where this shouldn’t be a problem.

My point in bringing that up was to say that using glitches/exploits in a competitive settings was not limited to SSBM, but one of the most competitive console shooters in recent years.

Are we planning to try out some CoD4 before this meeting, perhaps afterwards? Just wondering since it’ll be a bunch of us already together and such.

If we’re putting it on the table as a prospective game for the LAN, afterwards. I’ll try and organize specific play testing sessions, testing out settings and games to get general feedback, input, etc so we can choose a definitive line-up before the LAN.

I couldn’t care less about what the top tiers of competitive play find aceptable. Personally, I find these organizations to be silly and contrary to the very purpose of video games (fun). We are an individual organization which should base its rules upon common sense, not the rules of others. Cheap is cheap. Wavedashing does not give a slight advantage, but is so disruptive that it can win a match.

What they find acceptable is generally fair and balanced. And silly and contrary? I don’t believe so. Multiplayer has always been a form of function to show who is better and have fun while doing it. And generally, I’ve had fun at all competitive tournaments I’ve been to. All the competitive institutions do is reward the top player who shows up that day and wins. These institutions foster their own communities, some quite massive, but very similar to our own in many respects. And if you want to talk about cheapness? I find it cheap that people use shotguns in Snowbound. But it doesn’t stop me from playing that map. In fact, it makes me use the same tactics I appall just to win. But, at the same time, I realize it is a very legitimate strategy because the structure of the map forces an easy set-up that way. But, whatever. People are entitled to their own opinions. But the reasons why some of the executive staff choose to use the same or similar settings as that of top tier competitive gaming leagues and communities is for the reason I stated earlier. I can breakdown the argument for Halo very much so, just as Matt has at least pointed out a few reasons, and probably could find several more.

Honestly, the Blue ray only helped out the PS3 when it was the cheapest player on the market. And it wasn’t like there were any games that were HD-DVD on the xbox. It shouldn’t hurt 360 sales at all, since the HD-DVD drive was an accessory to begin with. Maybe hurt in hopes of future projects like the fabled HD-DVD xbox, but who cares? The last thing we need is another model of the 360, cept maybe more colors or something like that. It MIGHT boost PS3 sales, but that’s a hard call to make. I haven’t really seen a need to have blue ray capabilities for a game yet, unless it’s going to be some god awfully long RPG. Developers are still working with what’s current and what sells, and if its still standard DVD, then that’s what it’s going to be. It’s up to Sony and their various production studios to make THE blue ray game since I really don’t consider anything out right now to be it. My 2 cents on the issue.

…..I doubt this conversation should’ve been started in the tournament results thread. Ephraim, next time you have an issue like this, please post a general thread about it separately, or if you have issues with a small group of people or even an individual, TAKE IT TO PM.

But I suppose since this discussion has come full force, I’ll provide my input.

As far as the “glitches” in SSBM goes, well… I can’t make an official judgment or anything like that.

All I can say is that these glitches have become integrated techniques in the top circuits of competitive smashing. It’s not “cheap” in that regards since it doesn’t become a constant spam of damage deal techniques, but rather ways to gain and maintain some control as well as move around the level. The same thing happened to Halo 2 at the exact same time. SSBM and Halo 2 were the two titles for MLG’s circuit a few seasons ago. And you saw the same amount of use of glitches, ones that are easy to execute, take very little practice to master, and can easily to integrate into for a few situations.

Need I remind you of what they are?

BXR – Melee, followed by a rapid successive headshot.

BXB – Double melee. Just slightly faster than if you pressed B twice.

RRX – Double shot. It fired two bursts in rapid succession, but caused the gun to reload, even though the animation did not queue.

By the way, I doubt wavedashing is anywhere near what spawn camping is. Wave dashing is a map movement technique.

Spawn killing is mostly luck. Whether it be bad or good. However, you can manage spawns and have weapon and map control, but it’s not that hard or impossible to break.

I leave it to the community to make an official decision regarding the next LAN’s tournaments to make rulings on such. The decision will be announced to the public and if they are banned, then a full and explicit detail of what these glitches and exploits are will be posted and pinned for reference.

All right, bumping this thread, and I’ll keep a list of prospects at the top. Shae, let me know if you contact any of the companies listed or any other ones. I don’t want us to seem like we’re harassing companies for sponsorships.

    Beat that.

Btw, I hit one of the floating missles right at the very beginning… My screen was scrolling ridiciously fast. That and the kitten got 100+ ft above the screen, according to the indicator at one point.

    Also, I used a 39.5 degree angle.
