ParticipantYep, as soon as Toshiba announced their exit of the HD-DVD market I knew it was over. Blu-ray was superb and superior in every aspect anyways.

ParticipantEveryone knows that the final nail in the coffin for HD was that porn went to Blu-Ray. Duh.
I really thought HD would have had a chance when the two came out over a year ago. That was back when I thought anything that had to do with the PS3 would end in fail (i.e., Blu-ray). Oh, wait… I still think that.

ParticipantAs long as DVD doesnt totally get the boot in the foreseeable future, I’m happy.

ParticipantReally Blu-Ray and HD-DVD failed. People are still buying more regular DVDs than anything else. With HDTV prices at an all time low, you can’t really use that as an excuse. Who knows where this will end up?

Participanti think where hd-dvd and blu-ray both shot themselves in the foot is going for the “exclusive” thing. Like, this kick-*edited* movie came on hd-dvd while that kick-*edited* movie came on blu-ray… people aren’t going to go buy both formats since it’s so ridiculously expensive to buy both types of players, and the movies still came on standard def dvds, so unless they already had hd-dvd or blu-ray players they bought them on standard def.

ParticipantI don’t care. Just give me something that will play Monty Python and I’ll be as happy as a clam.

ParticipantHonestly, the Blue ray only helped out the PS3 when it was the cheapest player on the market. And it wasn’t like there were any games that were HD-DVD on the xbox. It shouldn’t hurt 360 sales at all, since the HD-DVD drive was an accessory to begin with. Maybe hurt in hopes of future projects like the fabled HD-DVD xbox, but who cares? The last thing we need is another model of the 360, cept maybe more colors or something like that. It MIGHT boost PS3 sales, but that’s a hard call to make. I haven’t really seen a need to have blue ray capabilities for a game yet, unless it’s going to be some god awfully long RPG. Developers are still working with what’s current and what sells, and if its still standard DVD, then that’s what it’s going to be. It’s up to Sony and their various production studios to make THE blue ray game since I really don’t consider anything out right now to be it. My 2 cents on the issue.

ParticipantI remember a year ago reading an interview with Peter Moore. He actually said “The consumer’s choosing HD-DVD.”

I remember a year ago reading an interview with Peter Moore. He actually said “The consumer’s choosing HD-DVD.”They’ve been saying this for a while. If you watch and pay attention the media usually hypes over the losing product every time.
I’ve been calling this battle from day 1 but oddly enough they’ve both been losing overall until now. The exclusive deals did kill both because it turned 90% of consumers off. No one wants to buy 2 seperate $600 movie players just so they can brag about the HD picture that can’t be distinguished from a normal picture. Before it’s over with, Blu-Ray may die as well.
Just a heads up, my next prediction is the influx of cheap Blu-Ray players and the further decline of PS3 sales. As Oh Malley said, Blu-Ray only helps the PS3 if it’s the cheapest player on the market and for the past year it has been. That’s about to change and Sony may regret pushing MS out of the fight so fast.
Also, if you’ll noticed the Blu-Ray format is capable of a 4-layered disc. Sony obviously learned from what killed their Betamax.

ParticipantI was really hoping for HD DVD to be the winner. I bought my parents one of the $100 players at walmart back in November for christmas (plus it came with 5 free HD DVDs) so now they are stuck with dead technology. On the other hand I don’t feel too bad because honestly that player upscales regular DVDs so well they honestly look HD quality. This is where I think most consumers are going now anyways: buy a good upconverting player and wait for the next technology to come out. Seems logical to me I mean who wants to pay $400 for a Bluray player and then $30/movie?

ParticipantAt least Microsoft covered its *edited* by announcing that it might have a blu-ray attachment in the future. They basically said that it depending on which way the wind blew.

ParticipantTake a look around online now. Companies are still unloading the HD-DVD players; I saw one on BestBuy I think that was $100 with 7 free HD-DVDs; these things upconvert so well that I would consider getting one of those.

ParticipantYou realize the picture doesn’t actually get better right? A video can’t get any better than what’s already on the disc.
February 21, 2008 at 2:19 pm #37841Nickname
ParticipantIt honestly depends on the TV and the way the DVD player is hooked up.
For example, my parents had an older DVD player and when I upgraded them to the HD-DVD, the regular DVDs looked 10x better.

ParticipantI just love it…u know why…because i am a flipin genious….i have sony stock lol….This is what is gonna happen and when it did i took into account what would happen when hd-dvd is no longer there and this is whats gonna happen and my stock broker thinks so as well lol…when this happens which it has, playstation will be pushed more and more as the ideal player to the typical consumer. this will get the playstation out and the word of mouth of what it really can do which is somthing most of u think u know but are really ignorant to…even if they dont buy games which they will eventually and the sysyem amount on the market will increase thus sparking more third party developers which it doesnt have a prob with even now. it should over take xbox and possibly wii by chrismas 08 This is why, unless microsoft does somthing because sales hit a brick wall for the xbox when halo3 came out and not much has changed since then and also it is DVD formated so you will have more and more games with 4 disks and this costs money …and the only fire power the wii has left is brawl and once it comes out the fad will settel and be over…its marketed to children and children dont have money and it serves no other purpose to consumers since it doesnt even play dvds and if the word gets out people will finally discover that the ps3 does everything the wii does with better technology they use infared and ps3 uses bluetooth motion and weight sensors…Now lets look at the ps3, it still has some major fire power it still hasnt released any of its big exclusives that will sell the system, MGS4, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone, Haze, God of War3, PS Home, Little Big Planet, and of course ff13. Im not even gonna mention the Free dvr attachment u can get soon and the dualshock 3 controllers. Oh and top it all off microsoft anounce within the next 7 days all xbox hd-dvd player attachments are gonna be $49.99 to cashin on unsuspecting victims to make back as much money for the company as possible at the consumers expense…I have all the systems and i know what each has to offer and i even had the hd-dvd attachment for the xbox but i didnt buy any cause i knew this was gonna happen. i can conclude that all of them cost very much the same when u look at assesories and yes i mean the wii as well…Sorry this is just wonderful and funny because i knew this was gonna happen and you loyal xbox and wii fans are just gonna make me richer lol all i can say is I told ya so…and i will be back to talk about it when ps3 completes the rest of his mission. lamo

ParticipantDear Lord on High. That is one huge block of text.
February 21, 2008 at 6:39 pm #37874Nickname
ParticipantJosh, I think you missed the point of the thread being about how the hd-dvd format is dying; that has nothing to do with the xbox360, in fact Microsoft is already planning a BluRay player attachment for the 360.
Besides, xbox360 has a ton going for it anyway. They have some good exclusives coming out for it, including Gears of War 2, Halo Wars, Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, etc. Not to mention that many multiplatform games that have been released so far run BETTER on the 360 than the PS3.
Now I am not saying that the PS3 is a “worse” console by any means. The problem is that its “Cell” architecture is so much more complicated to code for that many developers don’t want to take the time to do so. In fact, Valve had a 3rd party port Orange Box over to the PS3 which is why it came out about a month later for the PS3.
February 21, 2008 at 11:00 pm #37898Bitey
ParticipantSame thing happened with the PS2, developers complained about the complicated way they had to code and once they figured it out everything was smooth sailing from there. I wont be surprised if the PS3 goes the same route.

ParticipantAt last night’s meeting I think we decided that we’d use the PS3 as a paperweight so that we don’t lose the sheets with brackets on them. Just sayin’.
It all seems like Blu-ray is just a neat little extra you get when dishing out the money to get a PS3. I don’t know, it may just be me, but I personally don’t know anyone who has gone out specifically to purchase a Blu-ray player.
February 22, 2008 at 11:50 am #37964MasterP
ParticipantI hate to point this out to you but as a Sony stockholder you should be uber-*edited*ed at the PS3, all it has done since launch is cost Sony money and dig into the profit margins which used to be quite high. The fack that, on release day, Sony was losing upwards of $200 per console sold should have cost someone their job. I don’t know what their profit margin is on the PS3 now but I know for a fact they are still losing money on every console sold so it’s not really that smart to be a Sony stockholder right now because the failure of this system could lead to ultimate collapse of Sony. Not to single out Sony, Microsoft hasn’t made a single penny on the XBOX or XBOX360 but they have the infrastructure to absorb the loss. The only console that has made money so far is the Wii, which Nintendo makes at least $50 profit per console.
The PS3 will NOT be seen as the ideal Blu-Ray player because, as I predicted a few days back, the prices of existing players is going to drop dramatically over the next year. As retailers are dumping HD-DVD players for whatever they can get for them, the price of Blu-Rays is already falling in sales ads. The PS3 will only be the ideal player so long as it is cheaper than the competition and while it may be able to compete with the player market for the time being it certainly won’t be able to come summer, especially now that the HD-DVD manufacturers are going to retool to compete in the new market.
The following is the NPD US Hardware Sales report:

It took over a year for the PS3 to start outselling the PS2 and it certainly isn’t because there wasn’t any to sell. As it stands now, the Wii is predicted to overtake the XBOX360 in total sales by the end of 2008. If the current sales trends stay as they have been, and there isn’t any reason to believe recent events will skyrocket PS3 sales, the PS3 will have less than 1/3 of the sales of it’s 2 competitors at the end of 2008.
Sure the PS3 is probably the most powerful of the systems but they are hard as hell to make games for which is why a number of developers have brought in 3rd party coders to make the PS3 ports of games instead of coding it with their own people. This can, and has, led to inferior versions of the same game being released on the PS3 as compared to the XBOX360.
