ParticipantAgain I ask, what point is a developer console or mod tools when the dedicated server will nit pick what you’re allowed to do on it?
Something I think you missed is that the mod tools aren’t even made yet and they don’t even have a team working on them. It’s an entirely post-release thing. They don’t even know when they’ll be released, citing difficulties in creating a set of tools due to the game’s engine. Also keep in mind that at one point it was said MW2 would have mod tools. We all know how that panned out.
Something worth noting is the very uncommonly quoted phrase in regards to “persistent experience”:
“We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides. We’re working very hard to marry those two things, so people can run dedicated servers and also participate in the communal experience the console players get to have, given they’re all on first-party servers.”
This is the exact same rhetoric we heard from IW before they pulled a fast one on PC gamers.

It isn’t stealing, lol. Gungame isn’t a CS only thing and it is quite cool that developers are even thinking of putting it in a game as a standard feature, something modders don’t have to create for the game. CoD:BO will actually support modders, dedicated servers, etc. Treyarch actually is showing their attention and commitment to the community instead of IW’s complete ignorance and bull*edited*. I’m happy to see that Treyarch implemented this, especially instead of possibly adding it as a $15 map pack/dlc, and think that the CS kids need to get over themselves, gungame may have originated from CS but CS isn’t the only thing that can run it and have it. Cry more and be happy people are noticing the community.
What rock have you been under? Treyarch is doing more harm to the community than IW did.
Treyarch has dedicated servers but you are required to rent them from gameservers.com, a company that has a terrible reputation for reliability. You can’t host your own server and without direct control over your dedicated server how the hell are you supposed to mod it? Sure you can make little changes but nowhere near the level we’ve seen with Source-based games and CoD4.
Gameservers is also extremely “big brotherish” about servers rented from them. They keep extremely tight control over what mods even Source-based servers use so I doubt any “unapproved” mods or maps are likely. If you think they’re going to pass up DLC you’re crazy.
Gungame is a selling point, much like Nazi Zombies was for CoD5. If the game can’t sale on it’s own laurels it shouldn’t be put on the market. Stealing features from other games (CSS/Battlefield2/MW2) and branding them as something new and cool isn’t going to fool anybody and it’s not going to make consumers anymore willing to shell out $60 for a slightly updated version of your last game.
Fanboy less and Google more please.

uhhh thanks liam but i think you have to actually play the game more than once a month to do the position correctly
No you don’t

When I was CSS CL I played maybe 30 minutes a week and the server was packed.

ParticipantIf you can get 15 I’ll sponsor the prize.
MasterP
ParticipantI’m thinking CoD:BO is going to smell in all kinds of ways.
Since gungame is an uncopyrighted mod Treyarch can steal it all day long but that doesn’t mean it’ll be useful in the CoD series. Because it won’t.

Apparently Guilty Gear was ran and well-ran and popular at the last lan, it could be a tournament we could have on the side and something anyone can step in and play with or without bringing their PC. I don’t know the logistics of it about whether you play it on the same screen or if you play online, etc but if it is popular and well-ran, as well as getting people to attend future events, then its fine by me.
How many people did we have at the last lan for CSS? And the lan before that as well? If there is popularity for it then I would think that both could be supported.
No PC games were run at the last LAN.
Guilty Gear is a same screen fighter with PS3 controllers in Japanese. I seem to remember there being only 1 copy.
The one time we played CSS last year it was very successful. And by very, it was tied with TF2 for the most PC players if I remember correctly. Had like 15-20 I think.
Regardless, do you think it would be easier for a PC player to randomly pick up and actually enjoy guilty gear or counter strike? At least with counter strike, they get to play for 20 minutes before being eliminated and even if they’d never played it before they have a pretty good chance of making it to the 2nd or 3rd round :\

ParticipantWe could probably write a script to do it.
I’ve gotten the ball rolling with ITS on this. Hopefully we’ll either have it fixed or know that it for sure can’t be fixed early next week.

ParticipantConsoles… oh no… you know what that means…
Gearbox hasn’t released a solid FPS game in a long time, hopefully they don’t try to jump on the “take a good PC game, develop a sequel for consoles and do a half-*edited* port to PC” bandwagon like so many others have. The traditional duke nukem fans are so skeptical of DNF at this point that if it even hints of a console port it’s going to fail hard. Gearbox and 2K don’t have the capital to recover from a decisive failure.
In the meantime though, I’ve started playing Duke Nukem 3D again and at 1920×1080 it’s a *edited* good looking game.

Guilty Gear over CS:S…….
Blame Daniel (Tallgeese) he was the tie-breaker!

Honestly though if we can bring in a lot of people wanting to play it at the LAN and Guilty Gear is a hassle to setup, etc then I predict we’ll see CS being played again. The interest in CS has just been lackluster at best, there just isn’t as many people who play it anymore.
Since it’s an imported game, only like 2 people at most own it.
I’d be curious to see if the 13 that voted for CSS were new members, if so we should have definately tried to bend to their interests. Was that even taken into account for the tie breaker?

ParticipantFirst and foremost, congrats to all on a huge attendance at the first meeting. Keep this up and you’ll have one of the best years on record. It would be awesome if we had to move our meetings to the UC MP room just to fit everyone, at that point you guys would be unstoppable. For the new (and returning) officers, forum permissions will be updated Friday.
Second, have the constitutional revisions been written and merged yet? If not, would you mind me helping? (I feel like this version is my baby
)Make sure you guys advertise this LAN event on the ASU website. Those guys absolutely love Melee and in the past we’ve had some drive to campus just for that one game.
@ Kazka, if you need spare copies of Melee or VC Mario Kart 64 let me know.
I’m going to contact ITS in the next few days and try to get SC2 straightened out. There’s a couple things it could be but if it’s the one I’m thinking we’re probably screwed for 8-9 months

About Magic the Gathering, on the day of our December LAN there are no other reservations in the entire UC. If you think you can make this work, reserve the Cardinal Conference Room on the 2nd floor. You should have more than enough space and it’s far enough from everything else that noise won’t be an issue.

Suggestions for a handgun?
Springfield XD-9. It has all the advantages of the glock but none of its weaknesses. It has grip, trigger, and drop safeties and is IMO one of the safer pistols for CCW. You can tell if it’s *edited*ed and/or has a round chambered visually or by touch (for night use).
In RL, 9mm kills just as well as .44 or .50 caliber. If you’re concerned about stopping power get deadlier rounds, like Hydrashok. From what I’ve heard, using higher calibers for CCW is almost pointless because you carry less ammo per mag and it takes longer to aim consecutive shots.
Go to a larger store and see what feels best.

ParticipantI don’t think it’s ports. The SC2 beta worked fine last semester and ITS generally doesn’t re-close ports. I think it’s the way SC2 packets are assembled, maybe they’re a false positive in the filter or something. It could also be that UDP traffic is being flagged as low priority, generally UDP traffic isn’t harmed by delay.
I’ll look into it and shoot Stephen a text to see if he can check the ports.

ParticipantI would strongly advise that it be made EXTREMELY clear that if it doesn’t work correctly on gameday the tournament will likely be switched to freeplay only.
I know it’s extremely popular but in all likelyhood it won’t be fixed in time.

I’ve also noticed that after a few games of Nexus Wars, etc where it lags like *edited* I can go into a 1v1 and it will be absolutely fine.
That makes no sense. At all. Wtf is going on with the internet there?
You shouldn’t be able to bank lag and cash it in for a stable 1v1 match. That’s not how the internet is supposed to work.
Btw, this whole thing reminds me of my freshmen year when I used dialup in Reynolds to play Mechwarrior because the schools packetshaper gave me a 2000ms ping. It’s sad when I was getting much better pings on dialup than the school’s fiber connection <_>

ParticipantVirginia has epicly awesome gun laws. The only requirements are that you be over 18 and submit to (and pass) a $2 background check. When I got mine I had to go to the county sheriff’s office but being Virginia you might could go more local than that.
Btw, in Virginia fully automatic assault rifles and sawed-off shotguns are legal to own and do not require approval prior to purchase. I did not know that but I do know where I’m moving next lol. NC is borderline Nazi when it comes to fully automatic rifles.

ParticipantIf anything on this changes I’ll shoot you a PM and let you know. Hopefully this won’t be a problem much longer.
Also, meeting this Thursday in the UC. You should come.

ParticipantBtw, anyone *edited*ed about Obama’s latest stab at gun control?
The South Korean government was going to sell 108,000 M1 Garand and Carbines to US gun importers and Obama blocked the sale citing it could lead to gun accidents and they might “get smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions”. M1s are getting to be hard to find and one rated as good to very good can easily cost as much as a brand new, modern day assault rifle. The import cost was going to be low, on the order of about 1/4 the current retail price.
I was going to hold off on buying an assault rifle but if Obama thinks terrorists use M1s he can’t be far from figuring out they might also use AKs or M4s.

ParticipantNCSU held a launch party for ODST and it was pretty successful. Idk if you can get ahold of enough copies on launch day (Raleigh has walmarts every *edited* where) but if you can that’d be a great way to get everyone excited for the LAN.
The UC Multipurpose room is available after 5:30 that day too.

I don’t think you noticed how extreme of an amount of personal bias I put into my post.I was going to go with sarcasm

Knowing the average tournament length and attendence last year could only be beneficial. Plus if we have a massive showing at the meeting it would help to be able to reduce the tournaments we host on the spot to prevent overlap on gameday. Yeah I know you’re looking at me funny but with a very large turnout it would be better to host fewer tournaments and have minimal or no overlap than host more and have the top 25-33% of a tournament have to forfeit another because of overlap. And I’m only talking like 1 game here, maybe just bump it to freeplay.

ParticipantWelcome to the forums! I just wish your registration and first post were under better circumstances.
Unfortunately there’s not a whole lot you can do to fix that right now. The people at the IT help desk don’t typically know what they’re talking about with non-standard issues like this but they did get one thing right there: we’ve informed them about the problem and they’ve pretty much completely ignored it.
The main problem is that their brand new, $225,000 filter isn’t working like they thought it would and rather than unplug it from the network and try to fix the problems it’s causing they’re just chugging along and hoping it either fixes itself or the complaints go away. I can’t say I blame them, it’d be a hard pill to feed to the CIO that all that money was spent on something that fixes problems at the expense of hurting the end-users.
Our server is under the same campus policies that the rest of campus has and right now we don’t have the capability to forward gaming traffic through it. To be honest, I don’t know if doing that would even fix the latency problems that Starcraft2 has right now as our server traffic still goes through the same webfilter. If ITS doesn’t get their act together on this in the next week or so we may very well look into setting up a proxy server to try to fix this for the on-campus students.
Since you’re in one of the newer dorms you should have the lowest pings on campus, the wiring in the Balsam and Blue Ridge network closets is a work of art. Hopefully once this is resolved you can start enjoying the sexy fast internet. Trust me, it’s the first thing you miss after graduating.

TLDR: Hang loose. If ITS doesn’t fix it soon we’ll try to fix it for them.
