Considering how competitive the card still is, would you honestly recommend I upgrade?

Never said you needed to upgrade, just that he ended up with a better card than you did and spent the same amt of money overall.

When I bought that card it was the best on the market and had a very competitive cost/performance ratio.

I can’t argue with that. I bought the 8800gts 640 back then and it cost about 25% less but was about 25% slower. the price/performance of both cards was about equal. I still wouldnt pay that much for a video card though.

Add up the total amount you’ve spent on video cards for the last 2 years. It has to be close to that.

The problem is even though that might be true for kuros, he has a better card to show for it.

    wall of garbage

First, the one link of mine was supposed to be http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/ph…ii_720_810_am3/ sorry I guess I double posted the same benchmark.

I love the whole ” Fallout3 is dominated by a dualcore (we’ll throw that out)” because it means you miss the point and that is that 4 cores doesn’t necessarily make for better gaming than 2 cores, hence the reason I have not upgraded my almost 3 year old CPU.

So… you are faulting anandtech for using beta drivers at the time of the review when ATI’s full release drivers hadn’t been released for its cards? Also why would you be complaining if the other ATI cards are using older drivers? Shouldnt that make them slower? Besides we are comparing the 4670 vs the 9600gso on the same machine. I don’t really see your argument.

Yes, in the past 3 years I have been through many laptops, all of which have cost > $800 because I am still trying to figure out exactly what purpose I want a laptop to serve for me. My desktop on the other hand has many parts in it > 2 years old, including HDD, CPU, and motherboard, and the original RAM. All I have done is upgrade the ram (which was warranted but rather cheap) and the GPU, which in retrospect was probably a waste of my money. Also, weren’t you just the one that hounded me for comparing laptops and desktops when you just went and did the same thing?!?

Also you didn’t build a $450 machine there. You built a $570 machine. Mail-in rebates are a joke and I don’t count them when pricing parts because they can easily take > 3 months to get back. I missed the mark too and came in at $450. If I recall though I said to spend the extra and get the 4850 and the phenom x4 920, which at the same price point as your build would have had a CPU that performed roughly the same while having a MUCH faster video card. Just sayin.

Finally the “spend $800 and be happy” thing isn’t what you did either so… yeah good job on that one.

Sorry I am going out of order but I also noticed you talking about the nvidia rebranding the 8800gs as the 9600gso (which they did). I should have been more specific initially: the radeon 4670 is NOT a rebrand of any ATI card. It has very similar specs and performance as the 3850 which is why I made the comparison. In reality though the 3850 uses 256 bit memory and the 4670 uses 128bit memory but the 4670 is clocked higher to help compensate. Thus that is in no way a rebrand. I have no idea why you are such an nvidia fanboy but seriously I think the 4670 deserves some credit for being a decent gaming card that is only $65. I was actually considering buying one for my media center PC cause the 8600gts that is in it performs kinda meh. Oh and while I am on that topic, yeah my 8600gts DESKTOP CARD really can’t handle l4d very well at 1280×800 so I would LOVE to see a 7600 run it wonderfully.

well it’s LIKE 1.6 but plays a little different. Honestly there are other better games to buy if you want to actually try something new.

Also I’d like to point out that not everyone has $800 to blow on a new pc. Some people have to do the best with what they have.

yes. Hence the reason AMD, Intel, and nvidia, as well as EVERY OTHER COMPANY, sells “entry-level” and “midrange” parts. Not only does not everybody have $800 to spend, but not everybody NEEDS to spend $800, depending on what they want to do with the computer.

Nickname: The 7600 would play L4D and CoD4 at medium. If we’re using something like Crysis as the baseline for NEW then nothing we can price him will meet that short of spending money on a NEW video card. NEW card to play NEW games, old (cheap) card to play old games. You just can’t get around the whole “get what you paid for” thing.

The 9600 I posted averages 20-30% better in benchmarks and the CPU is roughly 25% faster. Other than that I guess they’re virtually the same speed.

My laptop’s 8600 can barely play l4d at medium…. and major’s new laptop has a 9600 and can barely play l4d at medium so yeah, I’m gonna stick with my statement about the 7600 not being capable of playing newer games at medium settings.

And LOL have you even looked at benchmarks of the 9600gso vs the radeon 4670? or gaming benchmarks of the q9400 vs x3 720?? Maybe next time do your homework but since you are incapable I will do it for you…

radeon 4670 vs geforce 9600 gso:

    extremetech said:

When judging the performance of these cards, two main points come to mind. First, they’re remarkably evenly matched. There are some games and settings where either ATI or Nvidia runs quite a bit faster, but on the whole we’d call it a draw. Only when you enable anti-aliasing does the ATI card regularly run most games faster

    anandtech said:

the 4670 outperforms the 9500 GT, and where it doesn’t out perform the 9600 GSO it is competitive.

    q9400 vs x3 720:

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showd…?i=3512&p=8

the only GAMING benchmark where the 720 really loses is far cry 2, in the other 3 they are virtually equal

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showd…?i=3512&p=8

forgive the fact that its the q9450 instead of the q9400 (the 9450 is faster), but the x3 720 clearly wins in farcry 2 and l4d, clearly loses in bioshock, and is fairly even in the other gaming benchmarks.

so basically I would like to see where the “9600 I posted averages 20-30% better in benchmarks and the CPU is roughly 25% faster” comes from. quick edit: my statements are assuming gaming only. Clearly the q9400 has advantages for other applications.

using a build that gets to a price point based on mail in rebates is… obnoxious.

Also, your build will be virtually the same speed as mine in game, and no, a geforce 7600 will NOT play NEW games at medium settings.

Now I know this isn’t high-end and MasterP will find reasons to complain as he always does but that computer will play every game out using at least medium settings and is the best you can do for that price. I would recommend spending an extra ~$70 on top of that though and upgrading to a phenom II x4 920 and a radeon 4850 but still for under $500, a decent gaming computer is within grasp.

Also for MasterP who doesn’t know, the radeon 4670 is basically the same as the 3850, which was a pretty decent card and actually can play games at a budget price.

in other words…. upgrade your ram first. If you want to do more gaming besides CS 1.6, you will need to buy a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, and video card.

Video card is most important for gaming. RAM needs to be at least 2gb. if you need to save money on something, buy a cheap CPU and upgrade it later.

first JtD, welcome to the forums and hope you will enjoy yourself at WCU.

As for the computer thing… I could make arguments either way. The gateway FX line with the 9800m GTS is pretty darn good for the money but it really depends on why you wanted a gaming laptop to begin with. I liked having a gaming laptop back when I would go home on the weekends while at school and wanted to game at home too. If you only plan to game from your room (and of course at the LANs) then def go for a desktop. Besides getting more for your money, they are also more comfortable to play on over long periods of time. if I were starting out, I would go for a desktop and a netbook personally. If you are curious, I went the gaming laptop route then decided to buy a desktop anyways; one thing ppl rarely think of is unless you get like an SSD, laptop hard drives are MUCH slower than desktop drives, and when gaming that is a real pain (IMO)

OMG do you have any clue how many ppl BlueCross/BlueShield employs just them? That company alone is actually comprised of almost 40 independent companies (ex: Bluecross Blueshield of North Carolina), and in total BC/BS insures over 100 million people. I don’t think them going out of business would be a good thing.

I mean its to each his own sorta thing… some ppl like it some don’t. I personally liked the movie. Was it perfect? No way. But I thought it was pretty decent. I actually watched it in theaters twice (only paid once). TBH there are a lot of other movies that everyone likes that I think are *edited* so I say it depends on the person. If you don’t like it (or at least don’t like Michael Bay- totally understandable)… don’t watch it? Not that hard.
