ParticipantThey managed to wrestle the copyright holding away from Microsoft and back to one of the original owners.
Microsoft had taken the series and virtually neutered it, releasing a decent game for the PC and then shifting to severely dumbed down versions for XBOX and DS. When the dumbed down versions didn’t pull PC players to the XBOX they got frustrated and canned the entire franchise.
Jumping on a building breaks windows, weak buildings collapse under the weight, fully destructable environments, fall damage (previously removed by MS). A definate step in the right direction.

only masterp would care about this…Not here, no. The mech community used to be fairly large until developers started treating it as a quick and easy way to make money as opposed to taking the time to make a game people really want to spend money on. Even though it didn’t have a CD key, the vast majority of MW4 players bought the game as opposed to copied.
The immediate problem is that this is probably going to kill the Microsoft sanctioned Crysis mod. MWLL was one of only 4 mod teams given the Crysis SDK prior to the game’s release.

ParticipantJust to give an idea about how this new company is different:

In honor of BattleTech’s 25th anniversary, Smith and Tinker has authorized MekTek.net and MekTek Studios to distribute MechWarrior 4 (along with its expansion packs) completely free. For years, MekTek.net has been the central point for online distribution of MechWarrior 4 expansion packs. Now they can provide the core game free to the fans as well. Keep an eye on BattleTech.com – the free download will be available soon! They’re giving MW4 and the 4 official expansions away for free.
They’ve also shifted the “Classic Battletech” tabletop series to the front and it looks like the Dark Age stuff is being seen for the stupidity that it is and is being cast aside.
They classic rulebooks and novels are also being reprinted and they’re holding community votes to decide the order.
All in all it looks like they’re scrambling to undo the decade of damage Microsoft and Wizkids have done to the franchise.

Had they done this 2 years ago the community would be much stronger than it is right now.

ParticipantMW5 looks amazing, though, I’m not a huge fan of the Battletech series’ plotlines.

ParticipantI just hope they keep the mercenaries element. I enjoyed mech 2 merchs and mech 4 merchs. The rest of the franchise were only meh imo. And yea, Microsoft ruined it.

ParticipantThis will be like Mech 2/3/4 in that it will be campaign driven. If that succeeds in drawing crowds it’s almost a guanantee that a mercenary based sequel will be released.
