ParticipantThat is hilarious.

ParticipantYeah if WCU had an engineering grad program I’d have gone there too.

ParticipantHaving listened to some of the selection and purchase discussions, all they seemed to care about was how effective it was at filtering viruses. Everything else seemed to be secondary. Now that may not have been the case, but that’s the vibe I walked away with. When someone has a network problem, they wouldn’t be getting the complaints and since both systems and networking generally ignore performance complaints I imagine this sort of thing wasn’t considered something anyone in ITS would ever get nailed with.
As evidenced by Rossman’s identical experience with Aion, once the filter picks up a few malformed or questionable packets it seems to start filtering those as if all subsequent packets were bad. All it would have taken is for someone to lag or crash in a weird way for it to start filtering WoW packets as well. In theory this could happen to any game or online application.
This is likely a configuration issue on the filter. Considering that it’s happening to WoW, which has always had a very strong userbase on campus and never had problems, it cannot be a packet shaper issue. WCU’s connection is an OC-12 (622Mbit, 601Mbit useful payload) and the max for the last month has been 345Mbit so it’s definately not a bandwidth issue.
This is a fight the club leadership should be having with ITS, not our individual members. Either get them to do their jobs or replace them and put *leaders* in your leadership positions.

ParticipantThe frustrating thing is that I actually voiced concern over the lack of testing and was pretty much tossed aside in the discussion for doing it. This thing was bought without testing it on a single student and now students are suffering for it. There are so many other things that money could have been spent on that students would have found beneficial that it doesn’t even come close to offsetting the little bit of good it’s doing.
If what you’re installing both helps and hurts, find something else that only helps. There are tons of filters out there but they were deadset on buying one during that fiscal year. All their eggs were put in one that didn’t even come close to handling the load and they had to scramble to find a replacement. As a result, the filter that was bought had 1, maybe 2, weeks of testing. What should have happened, is they should have spent that money on William’s plan B, which was new computers for the labs and staff. Can you imagine the numbers you guys would see in the labs if they had brand new imac pros running Windows7 and Office 2010? It’d be full all the time.

Participantok so DNF has a new trailer and launch date.
May 3rd. They didn’t specify a year…
Trailer is very NSFW.

I know but without Ephraim the likelyhood of getting a tldr of the meeting posted here went down exponentially. I was hoping to plan ahead for it.

ParticipantWell Scott’s is pretty crappy too but A/B is by far the worst. One summer they had like 5 switches die in one closet alone with no load at all. Both closets have AC units that are broken.
Scott has the least reliable DHCP allotment. I tried to get it fixed over the summer but no one cared. They assume no one is going to hook up a gaming console or 2nd computer and with 30 day IP reservations, well, yeah that’s an inb4’able disaster.
Anywho, can we get a meeting minutes?

Albright/Benton has the least reliable network closets on campus.

ParticipantConsidering the incredibly small amount of data that’s been published about the PS3’s nand I can’t say I’m surprised. The golden rule is never install a Waninkoko firmware mod until a month after it’s first released. Large numbers of Wiis were bricked in the early days as well but after a couple months of “alpha” quality work Waninkoko became the gold standard for playing backup games and downgrading firmware.
I can’t imagine why Sony would have different sized nand’s but that’s definately a common cause for bricks because the block addresses needed for critical things like the bootcode would be different.
Still, Waninkoko’s backup player has never gotten anyone banned from Nintendo’s online network (and yes they do ban) so this pretty much means Sony is boned. I forsee people swapping the tiny stock drives for 2TB hard drives.
MasterP
ParticipantAFAIK not much at the moment.
In the short term I’d expect Other OS or some other Linux-based OS to be released sometime in the coming months along with firmware and security patches to prevent Sony from remotely detecting and removing it. Sony themselves may re-release it to keep people from “jailbreaking” their PS3’s. Expect to see piracy skyrocket and all remaining anti-piracy measures, both online and offline, circumvented within the next year. As Nintendo learned, once users can run custom-code the battle is over.
I’m surprised they didn’t fully implement their own security policy. The hardware is set up to allow much stronger security than what they actually used.

ParticipantInteresting that instead of trying to negotiate with the guys to prevent widespread release of the cracking details they’re choosing instead to sue them.
This changes my perspective on the PS3 and once the homebrew develops further I might actually pick one up. The primary reason I haven’t gotten anything other than the Wii is that once you get used to being able to load any software or OS mod you want it’s really hard to pay $300 for a console and NOT be able to do it. It’s like switching from an iphone to a verizon freebie that has no support for 3rd party applications.
The most hilarious part is in the comments of that news posting. Lots of posters there think the DMCA is not enforceable in the EU. Sadly, it is VERY enforceable in almost all EU member countries thanks to new anti-piracy legislation and the precendents set in the attack on TPB.

They haven’t scheduled one yet.
Historically speaking, it should be on the 2nd Thursday of the semester (Jan 20). This does NOT mean it will be though, if fact it probably means it won’t be <_>

ParticipantIt shouldn’t be a problem. So long as you can get an IP, your router will get one too.
Now playing games and other things that require open ports and an unshared connection (IE not slow) are probably going to be a problem. I had trouble with my last appt’s “included internet” and had to get my own cable connection. You might consider getting Roadrunner, they should have 1 year intro rates that’ll blow your mind.

Looks like you’re fallen for the oldest trick in the book. Just like someone else…

Unless you’re having problems or need a feature that it doesn’t have, I would stick with the stock Linksys firmware.
DD-WRT, Open WRT, and Tomato are good but they void your warranty, can sometimes be tricky to install, and occassionally prevent you from going back to Linksys firmware.

ParticipantYour WRT160N is identical to my 120N except you have the full 300Mbit capability and I don’t. Like I said though, I haven’t had any problems with it but if you’re going to buy a 802.11N router you might as well get one that supports 5Ghz. Neither of ours do.
Also, the newer versions of the 160N have serious firmware issues, to the point where they randomly crash and/or stop resolving DNS. The typical fix is to use DD-WRT. Similarly, the newer 120N firmware is abysmal.
The basic rule of thumb for linksys routers is to buy the v1 or v2 of them, in probably 90% of their models the quality nosedives after that.
MasterP
ParticipantIt wasn’t Raven, WCU deleted our server “accidentally” and we had to revert to an older backup.
Please post a link to the image you’re trying to use and I’ll take a look at it.

ParticipantSpend the money and get a nice Linksys N. Regardless of which your laptop uses, both N and G adapters can connect to the N router. Almost all N routers can broadcast in the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequency ranges and some of the nicer ones can use both ranges simultaneously.
I use a 120N and it’s ok but I wouldn’t recommend it. My dad has the 310N and it’s great but they discontinued the model after screwing up the later revisions :\
For best performance, you’ll want a simultaneous dualband, this gives the raw range of the 5Ghz frequency and the obstacle penetration of the 2.4Ghz frequency. I would recommend the WRT400N or E3000. The E3000 is pricey but you want something that’ll last and this is an area where you definately get what you pay for. Both support DD-WRT.
Unfortunately right now there’s really not a good middleground in terms of price. The WRT610N is a perfect balance of features and price but has a severe overheating problem. The E1000 is 100Mbit and only has a 2×2 antenna config with 2 antennas, making it pretty much worthless in terms of useful wireless. The E2000 has gigabit wired but isn’t simultaneous dualband and only has 3 antennas. Better but not great compared to the E3000’s 6 antennas
