yea any is trying to help out with the gaming issues so try to get in touch with him and make sure you have as much data on the issue as possible.
Would have been better for everyone if ITS cared while they had a gamer on staff <_>
If he has any specific questions about game traffic or packeting or what ports a game uses tell him to give me a call. I’m sure he won’t but the offer’s out there.

Is it moving back on campus?
Last time it was on a campus server it was randomly deleted. We feel safer with it being in a datacenter where that sort of thing doesn’t happen lol
Btw, Adam’s new webserver gives Atari a run for its money. Congrats on the upgrade!

ParticipantI recommend one of the many walmarts within a 30 minutes drive. Each has all you need to deck out an apartment.

ParticipantAs shown in “The Walking Dead”, zombies are willing to turn large livestock into happy meals so I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.

ParticipantThe problem is most of those 7 reasons are not only inaccurate or misleading, but they also fail to take into account many virus transmission vectors, such as fleas/ticks, water, and wild game.
What I don’t understand is why everyone plans on going to the gun store. You did notice that right? Almost everyone who has a plan intends to trek to the local walmart or gunshop and load up. The Oregon Trail message reads: “You made it to the gunstore but died in a brawl for the last box of ammo.”
Aside from shotguns, my family keeps no less than 500 rounds in every caliber we own guns for. Whenever we buy a new gun we also order a crate of ammo for it. It’s a good deal cheaper per round anyway. When SHTF you *WILL NOT* be able to buy anything. Why would a store owner sell you supplies? They’re his and he’s going to keep them for his own family, same goes for store employees. As for walmart, if you aren’t in the store when the news breaks you don’t have a prayer of getting supplies. And even if you get your hands on something, that doesn’t mean you’re leaving the store with it. Those with concealed carry permits, and yes it’s legal to carry in walmart, will be the ones leaving with supplies. “Hey that’s mine! Oh you’ve got a gun, nevermind you can have it.”
On that note, magazines. Buy lots of them. A bullet is useless outside of one. Also handy is a strong backpack or duffle bag, the kind you order from a gun store or military surplus. Nothing is more awkward than carrying around supplies in a suitcase, yeah it kinda worked in zombieland but let’s be honest. No. Make the assumption that power and natural gas will be cut off within 2-5 days after SHTF and be sure to have cooking and heating supplies accordingly. This is where people in the country have a clear advantage, those with fireplaces and stoves can continue eating cooked food. With a small generator they can also power their well pumps to get fresh drinking water, just turn it on for a few minutes to fill the bathtubs and they’re set for a week or two.
Food will be the biggest problem but you can order a years worth of long-term food online now. This is the one thing my family doesn’t have ATM but will probably get next year, not for zombies but because having a couple years worth of food in your closet is never a bad thing. Hell you can even buy canned meats with a 10+ year shelf life. Also worth grabbing is fuel stabilizer so that any gas you have can be used after long-term storage.

Is CS:S still played any at LANs?
No. Students vote it in but never play it.
MasterP
ParticipantOh snap, good point.
MasterP
ParticipantWith CSS we always used random team selection but the random teams were always “random”.

Yes, because CS:S had huge turnouts at most of the LANs the year before he took office. /rolleyes
You don’t understand. Hopefully you will some day.

I am aware it’s run on his computer, and frankly, that’s fine by me. As long as I have a reliable server with friendly people on it, I wouldn’t care if it’s hosted in North Korea.
You’ve obviously never played on a “reliable” server in NK. If you had you’ve narrowed down your expectations more.
The point of a server being on Atari isn’t that it’s simply “up”. There’s much more too it than that. Do you intend to play on our server over the Christmas or summer breaks? I hope not, felix’s computer won’t be on campus. Even if it is, most UNC schools are cutting off power to the dorms for the winter break. The point of having Atari is that we have a unified presence online that doesn’t change based on who’s in office or what time of the year it is. All our servers are on the same IP and thus easy to find. They’re all on the same machine and thus easy to manage. They’re all on the same subnet, unfirewalled, unmonitored and unfiltered by ITS, thus better to play on. Atari is 1 hop from the main connection, Reynolds is 7 hops. Atari has a backup diesel generator, Reynolds does not. We have a $5,000 server sitting on a unmetered private gigabit connection, essentially a $13,000/month connection, and you’re fine with using a measly quad-core, or less, sharing a gigabit connection with 250 other people?
I think I’m starting to see why you guys never get along with alumni. Our expectations and desires are in a totally different league than what you’re playing in.

Even before Felix was VP, it wasn’t popular.
Also, the minecraft server is fine.
Before Felix it was at least up and had a handful of regulars. In fact, it was actually picking up steam until felix took over and left it to deteriorate. <_>
FPS servers will not populate themselves, they need CLs to maintain and populate them. Since Felix didn’t appoint any CLs, guess what happened. Valve pushed out an update, no one updated the CS or CSS servers for 2+ weeks, and when they were finally updated everyone who was playing there had already moved on. That’s gameservers 101, it happens every time and is the fastest way to kill a server.
Also, just as an FYI, the minecraft is not up. I just checked. What you’re playing on is being run from a dorm room because felix couldn’t figure out how to get it to run on Atari. Instead of googling to find the solution he just assumed it was a problem he couldn’t fix and gave up. Just like all the other servers that are down, the problem is extremely simple to fix. You just have to care enough, or know enough, to fix it.
But hey, don’t take my word for it. Go ask felix. When he tells you the problem you’ll probably facepalm at how simple it is.
Back to CSS:
The server is outdated and by now probably broken. Since no CL was appointed, you’ll need to contact the PC VP to get it fixed. I wish you the best of luck with that, he doesn’t check the forums anymore.
MasterP
ParticipantYeah at that price range you typically get what you pay for. Be super careful with it because it doesn’t have a single molecule of steel in the frame lol
Dropping it produces the same effect as a smart car colliding into an 18 wheeler

1) Have the players sign up as teams. I’m not sure if the FPS tournaments do this or not, but it would expedite the event.
PC has never done that for FPS games because it kills attendance and ruins gameplay.
The only reason something like would seem to run faster is because fewer people would play it. ASU held PC tournaments that required teams to sign up and their attendance fell through the floor. Even if you offer to create teams on gameday, you’re going to be pairing a bunch of noobs or amateur players against teams of pros. The only people having fun are those on the winning teams, everyone else walks away feeling like they just wasted their time.
PC already has several team assignment methods that have worked for years and with many different games. Why not use one of them?

CS:S has lost a lot of popularity on campus
It probably doesn’t help that they’re over a month out of date and the PC VP doesn’t care enough to have even appointed a CL to run them.
On that note, can we get someone who cares to run for the position next time? I’m sure felix cares about minecraft but considering he can’t even get that running on the server I’m not really sure how he plans to sell himself as being experienced or driven enough for the job. Only 1 of WCU’s 30 game servers are up-to-date and running. 31 if you count the minecraft. Even you have to admit that is unacceptable.
Hell the only reason that one server is running is because it’s the alumni-run TF2 server. It’s full 24/7 btw.

ParticipantAs much as I hate Best Buy, that’s a pretty good deal. You won’t be playing crysis but it’d be great for a general use or media laptop.
Whatever you do, don’t buy the extended warranty through Best buy, it’ll be Geek Squad and they’re terrible.

Stats for Jan. 1 – Dec. 15: (note analytics was down Feb – May due to ITS deleting the site, the subsequent move off of campus servers, and the website redesign)
22909 visits by 4704 unique visitors from 95 countries
119788 pageviews
Average pageviews per visit was 5.23

ParticipantAlumni are trying to figure out which of us has the google analytics account for the website. Once we do we’ll send you the report. It’ll have all the data on that you can stomach.
MasterP
ParticipantWe can pull Google Analytics for it but it’s likely dropped since the execs decided they didn’t want a club website.
MasterP
ParticipantTry looking 15-20 minutes out of the city in one of the smaller surrounding towns. Rent should be much cheaper.

I was under the impression that Gunrose wanted Historian. Taking pictures and videos of events is the Historian’s job, and that’s what he’s been doing.
And I have taken initiative for advertising. I pester Thor about if he has the posters ready or not, and I’ve even sent him ones when I wasn’t sure. Also, I have some good ideas about how to reach out as a club to attract more people to our events.
Don’t get me wrong, Thor is a cool guy, he just seems to drop the ball on advertising. As for Gunrose, He seems to be pretty enthusiastic about taking pictures and stuff, and I think he could preform as a good Historian. I don’t really know Waffle, and I have nothing against him. I don’t want to screw him over, but I’m still going to run for the position.
I like Thor but too often he gets busy in RL and drops the ball. He’s a great guy but I don’t think anyone that’s married should be a club exec. There’s just no way the club will get the priority in your life that it needs. That doesn’t say anything bad about the person, because they’re correct in focusing on RL, but the club needs people who aren’t so busy in RL.
And agreed, Gunrose would make a great historian.
I’d still ask that you hesitate before running against Waffle. Check this thread for my reasoning: http://www.wcugaming.org/forums/index.php?/topic/13375-advertisement
I mean he’s already been making contacts with local LAN centers and reaching out to potential sponsors. He knows his stuff. I’m not saying you don’t but when given the option I always prefer the safer bet. The club needs someone with this level of dedication right now to rebuild the sponsor network that’s been lost over the last few years.

And Mitch, how did you know I was planning on running for Marketing next semester? Seriously, I’m not even trolling, this has been my plan for a while now.
I wasn’t referring to you. Gunrose and waffle have both taken initiative to help marketing and advertisement and both have said they’re running for marketing admin.
Considering you haven’t taken any initiative on this at all, until now anyway, I’m not sure how fair it is for you to swoop in and steal the position from people who are obviously well qualified for it. Waffle is the best flyer designer you’ve got, and is probably one of the better ones the club has ever had. Don’t screw him over.

Also I would like to run for Advertisement Director next time it is up for position because I am disappointed in how late the flyers went up this time around.
That makes 2 competent people running for the position next semester. That’ll be awesome.
About the flyer, the text is too hard to read IMO. The background seems to overpower the text.
Generally, you need to convey the gist of the message as they’re walking by. For most you’ll have 2-4 seconds to grab their attention. Get the name, date, and location as readable as possible from as far a distance as possible. If they’re interested they’ll come read the rest but you’ve got to grab that interest quick.
