Oh, grad school, that thing. I didn’t even bother trying to go to Grad School, I don’t think Western has a graduate program for Technical Writing anyways and I’d rather be earning money than paying for more education right now >>

The thing is that there was absolutely 0 problems with the internet on campus during the Fall with WoW until about half-way through the semester. The problems with Starcraft 2 were bonkers enough and then all of a sudden they *edited* up even more with the filter and start getting chokes in WoW that make you lag so bad you disconnect. It completely brings the internet to a crawl and affects EVERYTHING. When I was working in the Sandbox on campus my boss voiced concerns about the problems as well, as it shut off on us halfway through a transfer. While it may actually stop people from being completely *edited*ing retarded by visiting sites that are obviously riddled with spyware and viruses, it kills the internet as well. Western’s net was fine, now its *edited*, and could be causing problems for the Gaming Club as well with our servers that are constantly updated and… oh wait, sorry, I was dreaming and thinking of a few years back.

in reply to: First Meeting Jan 27 2011 #107304

I’m no longer at Western but chiming in about the internet stability/etc. The internet at WCU is complete garbage currently thanks to their filtering piece of *edited* software, I was getting lagged out and kicked off of WoW at least 2-3 times at night, peak hours or not. I know people currently in Central are dealing with this still so it is definitely nothing to do with the closets on campus at any of the dorms.

Also wtf Ephraim I thought you graduated.

    in reply to: Internet/PSN #106879

I was able to get on today so it looks like they’ve fixed the issue that was causing us not to be able to connect.

    in reply to: Internet/PSN #106828

:o I’m getting the same PSN error, its awesome. =/

in reply to: trade server suggestion #106715

My understanding is that they don’t give a *edited*, so why should we?

in reply to: A call to rework the servers #106709

This is becoming a detriment to the club, should just get it fixed.

in reply to: trade server suggestion #106708

    Do it.

    in reply to: Fail #106657

Do want, I’d play games all the time

    in reply to: Advertisement #106619

Their flier is a bit…. weird. It says gaming but doesn’t say anything else on it. I like how it doesn’t say LAN or anything on it since people don’t know what a LAN is most of the time but they don’t say anything about what games are offered, which could be good and bad.

What Lemm said is a great idea, contact them to see if we could advertise there and we can advertise for them (front page, etc). Also, we could trade contact lists. They give us their list of who they e-mailed and vice-versa, could be a real winner.

    in reply to: Advertisement #106460

With games like this you can’t just say “HEY LOOK, LAN!” People want to see what kind of tournament it is without the hassle of going to find it.

    SC2 Rules:

    1v1

    Blizz Maps

    No Race Changing

Depending on entrants everything up until Quarters is Bo1

    Bo3 in Quarters, Semis

    Bo7 in Finals

If enough interest there will be a losers and a winners bracket, though due to time constraints, doubt it.

    Prizes: ???

    Sponsors (add the logos, etc)

    in reply to: Advertisement #106453

Flyers look good, any possible way to get one specifically for games such as Halo: Reach and SC2 with rules/format/etc?

If we get sponsors and have some good prizes I can post this on teamliquid’s SC2 tournament section and possibly get quite a few people to show up, depending on if they’re able to/etc. >>

Not as many as SC2 now with Jaedong and the rest converting. They wanted to wait for the BW seasons to finish, as well as WCG, since the main tournaments are running SC2 ^^

What I was thinking of is a Tournaments section for our tournaments as well as theirs, that way we can advertise for them as well on there and on the sponsors page.

One thing I can think of offering the LAN centers guaranteed advertising is if we announced their tournaments on the website in some manner. For example either on the main page or creating an new tab specifically for tournament sections etc…

    Thoughts? Ideas?

Im trying to contact these LAN centers and think this would be something enticing to them.

    Love it, love the ideas.

With the LAN centers it will be difficult for us to have them advertise for us. They want people to come to their store to pay and play games, not send people to ours. If the events don’t coincide with one another and we’re able to have both parties working with one another it would be exceptionally beneficial. Places such as The Nexus (since it is in Sylva) is a prime store but if they are not willing to cooperate with us to generate business for themselves then there is nothing we can do. If we are able to send people to their centers for popular tournaments (Halo, Call of Duty, etc) then maybe they can do the same for us, as long as they aren’t on the same days.

The only Gamestop we really need to be trying to work with is the one in Waynesville, if you try working with all of the ones in Waynesville and Asheville, we may be getting too far ahead of ourselves since all 4 would want us to purchase items from their stores. A way around this is to contact the District Manager for Western part of NC for Gamestop, if there is one. I believe most Gamestops are owned and operated locally at each store, but are “controlled” by the HQ of Gamestop, so if you are wanting all of them to work with us then we may have to go higher up, in which point it may be too much of them to ask since we cannot provide all 4 stores with sales.

Not a chance, I’m finally graduating this semester :) lol.

As far as places such as Gamestop, The Nexus, and even Best Buy approach them as if we’re customers. If they advertise for us tell them we’ll buy from them. I don’t know how much money the gaming club currently has in its’ possession but if we tell Gamestop, Best Buy, or The Nexus (maybe all 3?) that we’ll be buying $100 worth of Gift Cards, merchandise, or other things from each of them at least twice a semester then they are able to look at us as a profit rather than a loss, all they would have to do is generate traffic for us. If they generate traffic for us that means we are able to generate more interest to WCU and to future sponsors. The more people we can get to attend the events makes it more and more appealing to larger sponsors and especially to the school, which gives us even more leniency.

Advertising at the arcade(s) in Asheville is a decent idea but Asheville is about a 45 minute drive from WCU, and while it would be awesome, I don’t see it plausible that we could get some people to take at least 2 hours out of their week to travel to Asheville, find arcades, and then try to negotiate with them when they’re decently far away. That’s why I recommended Craigslist, no travel time or expense time and it will reach out to Asheville and possibly further.

    in reply to: Advertisement #105517

I’ve been preaching this for years, including getting the community college and the high school involved. I’ve gone and talked to the owners at The Nexus a few times and they aren’t very reliable, it seems they are too focused on staying in their own setting rather than trying to advertise more and get more people to come to their stores. Daniel apparently got Gamestop to donate a decent amount of stuff for prizes this past LAN and if we can continue working with them and possibly get an official sponsorship or even advertising from Gamestop then that would be great. There are so many ways and venues for advertising the club and the LANs but they require A LOT of work to actually get going.

Daniel did not have a TON of time to get things organized and advertising to go out properly in time, along with sponsors, but with the amount of time we have now we can get a ton of advertising in place and hopefully things completely populated. The problem is that we NEED people to take the initiative on things and to put the work in to get people to come.

Some things that could have been a bit better for advertising and to do next time:

    1. Banner placement on the front of the UC. Whenever something is hanging off of the UC, people notice, whether directly or indirectly.

    2. Servers need to have advertisements for the LAN running 24/7, pretty much.

    3. The website needs it advertised on the front page weeks, if not a month or so, in advance.

    4. Signups need to be set up and in place before hand as well.

    5. Sponsors need to be contacted and they should be continuously contacted to check on the status, then their banners/etc should be added to the website and fliers.

    6. Flier design needs to be 100% completed in the next month or so, with the final design being sent to the print shop for our quota of high quality fliers to be printed off. If there isn’t enough, use some of the money in the gaming club account and get more made.

    7. Ask Gamestop if we can advertise for them on our website and then have the local store advertise for us. Don’t ask the cronies at the front desk, ask for the manager himself and explain things to him. Explain how we’ll work for him if he will just put up a couple of fliers and MAYBE tell people once in a while.

    8. Maybe we can even ask Best buy as well while we’re there?

    9. CRAIGSLIST! I don’t know how many of you actually use Craigslist or not to buy used games, etc. but Craigslist is an AMAZING advertising tool. When I was looking for Rock Band 2 for my PS3 back in Wilmington I saw a place in Myrtle Beach (45min south of me) advertising for their Call of Duty tournaments. Why couldn’t we do this for our LANs? Takes 5 min to make a Gaming Club account on Craigslist and another 5 min to make a couple of advertisements, especially if you just use the image for the filer as the advertisement.

    10. The tables in the UC were great, saw a lot of people playing games and I hope it brought a few more people in. If we get games such as Halo on there I think it will attract a lot of people as well. Maybe we can have a laptop playing a VoD youtube of a SC2 match or something as well?

    11. Freshman advertisement seemed good, we had nothing to track to see whether they were a freshman or a senior, etc. but I saw a decent amount of fresh faces so that is all is well. I didn’t see Dustin there (I don’t think?), so was there a reason as to why Dustin and a lot of the other freshman that were supposed to come with him didn’t show up? I think we could advertise once or twice more in the dorms for the freshman or even at places such as Harrill and the new dorms, but we should really be focusing on getting some appealing things that will draw people to the LANs, such as prizes/sponsors/etc.

There are A LOT of ways to advertise for our LANs and bring in tons of people, including highlighting certain popular games that are very attractive to gamers of all kinds (Halo: Reach, Call of Duty, Starcraft 2, Smash Bro’s, Tekken 5, etc.) The stuff they play at MLG, including maybe even CS/TF2/L4D2 on there, is a key thing that will draw people in. Games like BlazBlue, MeltyBlood, Guilty Gear, etc are all games that are amazing to play but appeal to niche gamers, which are great, just we need to appeal to the masses.

Lets get some of these ideas working, instead of just ideas.

Also Waffle, love your Tshirts, they look amazing.

So, like I said, none of the real leaders have switched yet and none of the major leagues have commented on switching either.

If this was going to be their last BroodWar season I imagine they’d have advertised as much, it’d have made the crowds bigger. Marketing 101.

    —————-

I know Tallgeese has contacted Stephen and Stephen explained to him that the filtering software wasn’t set to block anything and that SC2/WoW/etc weren’t supposed to be filtered improperly. Stephen added that it could possibly be that some packets are accidentally being sent into the trash during play and because of that is causing the packet loss/lag that we are experiencing. I’d love to see Stephen at the LAN sitting there fixing this, much like when he helped us fix our Vista connectivity issues we had at a previous LAN. I’ll try to find out from Daniel later if he’s sat down with Stephen if he doesn’t respond here first.

Also, I saw some fliers today! Woo :D

Yeah ok. Which Korean leagues? From what I read, idk maybe you read something else, most of the current SCBW professionals haven’t switched to SC2 yet and virtually none of the bracket leaders have moved over. I mean yeah if you include the lesser leagues like GSL but Starleague and MSL haven’t announced a switch yet.

Btw, CAL is HoN only, CPL hasn’t even announced a tournament yet let alone games, and WCG is using SCBW.

The reason why you don’t see Starleague (OSL) players currently playing SC2 is because OSL is finishing their last season, when OSL finishes players such as Jaedong and Flash will be moving over to SC2. Players such as the WerRRa’s and other pro-korean teams have already been making the switch to SC2 and some are playing in GSL.

Former acting coach of Pantech Curitel and former coach of WeMade Fox, Mr. Won Joongwook has returned to the e-sports scene as the head coach of the brand new Starcraft II team ‘STARTALE.’

Mr. Won, who played a key role in the founding of WeMade Fox, began his e-Sports career in march of 2003 with Toona SG, the predecessor of WeMade Fox. He remained with the team through its multiple sponsor changes, as SG Family, Pantech and Curitel Curriors, Pantech EX, and finally as WeMade FOX.

Joining STARTALE will be a number of well known ex-Brood War pros. Most notable is JulyZerg, there are also many other familiar names such as ZergLee, IntotheRainbow, and Silver. Even Silent_Control will be joining them soon in October, when his military service ends. Rounding up the lineup is Ssoja, a protoss player who has competed in the GSL as of late.

Startale (called ST for short) will begin activities as a team in earnest this coming October.

The “God of War”, July, has officially announced that he will be moving to Starcraft 2.

July, who belonged in STX Soul, did not recontract after his contract ended at the end of August. He revealed that he will be joining a Starcraft 2 team in order to take up on another challenge. Thus, July is the second progamer, after Iron, to officially announce his move to Starcraft 2. He is the first of the three “Top Star” Progamers to officially announce the fact.

July will be joining a new Starcraft 2 team that is in the middle of creation, run by a coach who has previously coached in a Progame team before. There are other players such as Kim Song Jae, Lee Chang Hoon, and Shim So Myung, and they will have an official announcement regarding their creation sometime soon.

When asked about why he was transitioning to Starcraft 2, he said that “Because I didn’t have many opportunities to play in official matches, I felt my purpose on the team diminish. I really wanted to play in a match. During this time, I got to play Starcraft 2. At the beginning, I didn’t have much interest in it, but over time, I got more and more interested and soon after I decided that I wanted to be active as a gamer in Starcraft 2 as I got better at the game.”

Regarding Starcraft 2’s gameplay, he said that “I think the game has gotten more difficult compared to the original”, adding that “But because I had experience playing Starcraft as a progamer, I’m getting better rapidly.” He added that “I’m currently the first place in my Diamond League, and I’m over 1500 points”.

Regarding his playing in the TG Sambo-Intel SC2 Open Season 2, he said that “My goal obviously is to win”, and added a confident remark, saying that “I’ve been watching the players who has passed the preliminaries of Season 1, and I thought I could have definitely won”

Finally, July said that “There may be a lot of people who knew about this before, and there may be a lot of you who only learned about this through this article, but I am planning on being as diligent as I was when I was active as a Starcraft progamer”, and adding that “While I’m now active in Starcraft 2, I am asking for my fans to continue to cheer for me just as before”.

Yeah it takes Blizzard a dozen or so patches to perfectly balance a Starcraft game. I don’t really see it replacing SCBW as the main competition game in the series for at least a year, probably two.

No, but seriously I don’t know if this is affecting anyone via Steam based games such as TF2/etc. If it is it would be another huge thing to add to the list of annoyances that have come with this filtering software.
