SpectatorCan we get 4 temp bots on (if we can) like the CS:S server has. If the server wasn’t completely empty people might join and stick around long enough to develop a regular TF2 crowd. I’d certainly join the server and knock around the bots a little while waiting. Right now though, I just get to sit with the round constantly restarting waiting to see if someone else connects.

SpectatorKinda weird that the guy stands up for himself and his belief that it wasn’t racism, in a way which Urban you say you acted previously which eventually lead to you ending up as an admin. Frankly I find treating people in a way which I myself dislike to be treated is sadistical – perhaps with your experience you should know better.
Being mature is one thing, the life experience you have to put that maturity to good use is another. But this really shouldn’t be turned into an age dispute, worse borderline abuse has happened and will always happen as people continue to try their best to keep the servers to a set standard. In these occasions no one was blamed for being too old to understand the youthful nature of their victim.
The finale is though and will always be, an Admin banned someone, someone argued the ban, no senior Admin upheld the arguement.
…
It’s the hard-knock life for us.

SpectatorHow about an ETA on when the the new server might be aquired? – Appologies if I’ve missed the answer to this elsewhere.

SpectatorSo-Cal, “It’s just a matter of working out a way to have them not take over the server”, I’ve posted about smart voting else where, and its been mentioned that something similar is in the works. In which case we could have multiple types of map yet have control over how often certain types of map appear on the vote, so we wouldn’t have to deal with round after round of SK, Deagle, etc.. Which would be nice.

Its definately worth having choice though as it makes things less boring for everyone, just at this stage allowing that freedom to the server population without giving admins the responsibility to revote consecutive map choices would make it difficult under the current circumstances. Especially during those times admins can’t cover – and to work effectively as a manual judgement system rather than a coded selection system, admins would need to be able to pull up a list of atleast the last 3 maps played to make proper judgements on what maps are and aren’t appropriate to play successively.

SpectatorIn that case, if it ever comes to it, lay the blame squarely on the architects shoulders… Silly Architect, making a school with killzones.

pinkcs
SpectatorYeah, personally, I always loved to make maps of my local surroundings, it was just majorly cool to be able to have 3D environments that I had attachment to.
But in the instance of a school, under the current socialist views… I’m really not sure. It’d be nice to have the place looking awesome and as realistic as possible, but it’s cause would probably be helped by using textures and atmosphere to seperate the reality from the game as much as possible…
If there ever is a gun incident at WCU though, any media outlet with the information that theres a replica of the school going around the internet where people blow the heads of their enemies on a regular basis is going to jump on this so hard – and unfairly press blame.
pinkcs
SpectatorWell yeah I wouldn’t assume you havent thought of it already.. but yeah.. *edited*. With the way American popular culture is, making a map like this could be a quick way to get your WCU Gaming club status revoked along with all afforded privillages… What sort of precautions are you taking?
No matter how benign intentions can be, we see the potential for exageration of negative factors and the effects of political correctness day in and day out. Be careful with this. Being gamers with the best point of view on the subject its far to easy to forget the impression that other people can get, some of those people could be parents of students or zealous faculty.

SpectatorI’m a little worried so bare with me, what is this is map of specifically?
pinkcs
SpectatorI think its worth having 2 choices of SK and AWP map, it makes choosing what to put up a lot easier, as there will atleast be two camps of people wanting different things from them and having to play the same map in one specific style does get slightly boring no matter how much you like it (or the experience can be made more exciting with more variety). It’s just a matter of working out a way to have them not take over the server as the majority of drop in visitors who come and go daily tend to vote the server into playing heavily on types of maps that can become detrimental to the static community who are around day in day out to play the more sterotypical play styles of de_’s etc.
pinkcs
Spectator*coughs* SmartVote… store maps with defining variables, SK, DE, FY and Alternative and have the vote code pick selections based on those.. Work it on a 3 round system and no SK style map in the vote every 1st and 2nd rounds, only in the third? Something like that… atleast if eventually something like that was possible you could have multiple SK type maps up, and not have to worry about them taking over the server due to the amount of them. You could also have class 1 de_’s and class 2 de_’s so the more popular server defining maps come up more often than the second rate levels.

SpectatorQuick reply, the autoshotty is a bit of a brainless weapon. In that, you really need to get the drop on someone, from behind or their side and have time to put in a few decent shots or one at point blank if you aim it right. Unfortunately the amount of noise a n auto shotty makes really doesn’t work with the need for a tactical approach, taking on more than one person generally gets you killed because as soon as you fire EVERYONE knows where you are, even taking on one person normally leaves them time to randomly spray at you and because you had to get so close to use the autoshotty you’ll normally take atleast a hit or more, which is leaving far too much to chance. The only thing its really good for is mopping up… if you’re on the type of close-quarters map where people are buying smgs its can work wonders against partially damaged combatants.
Erm, yeah. Weapon topic, I can try and get something up but I’m a little weighed down with some life issues, so no comment on when if no ones else gets around to it first. It’s just hard to put together a topic that can’t be pulled into being an angrily debated issue that ends up doing more harm than good. Hopefully we can all avoid that.

SpectatorHad my pre-order long before I heard about the beta offer :/ I doubt pre-ordering from another retail outlet afords such an awesome bonus.

… why dont we pick a good one ffs?How about bringing one that you like into the discussion or maybe elaborating on your reasoning for why a map already mentioned would be better for the server? We can all pick a good one, but sometimes collectively picking a good one starts with one person bringing something to the attention of everyone else – its not some sort of instantaneous magic fueled by desire alone
.Note: I think one of the problems with subzero is that the server by majority if too good for it. Theres no intensity to the level of play unless you rush like a moron because the most effective form of play is spending more time hiding than playing as most players are too good to miss a shot. From that I’d suppose we either need a map that makes rushing much slower or near impossible (Islands), or properly caters for it (The Wall).

SpectatorIs this something that will effect the normal people who can’t hop at all well, obviously arn’t scripting anything, and manage to get 2 hops in a row down a slope on occasion – more luck, than trying?
pinkcs
SpectatorWow… the amount of people who don’t get it. Point mods are great and all, but sometimes its nice to ‘talk’ about opinions without them having to be taken overly seriously.
I’m actually interested in learning about things like weapon usage, weapon physics, what people think and why – if anyone can continue this topic in that direction please do. Thats all I’m trying to do, so lets all get over the modifier crisis please?
pinkcs
SpectatorDisscusion doesn’t have to all about the executives and their decisions, maybe discussion can be about a topic people like to discuss so that a better understanding is available/attainable. Maybe discussion can be the community throwing ideas back and forth and not just setting up opinion-pins to be bowled down.
pinkcs
SpectatorFor Kuros: Maybe, maybe not. I guess you can continue to presume I don’t know anything about or research what I say, if it makes you feel better.
For discussion: I get a lot of annoying deaths to the M3, sometimes at range, sometimes not, sometimes 1 hit, sometimes not… But I suffer many more similarly annoying deaths to the AK and on occassion the AWP. Do people really see the shotgun as being a more powerful weapon than the AK? How many people really go into a round and think to themselves, “I’m gunna buy a shotgun! – Because its overpowered and makes killing easier than any of the other standard weapons.”?
pinkcs
SpectatorGotta love it when an opinion is an attempt to incite rebuke. When a discussion can’t have more than one side and when its considered mature to deliberately incite negative and off-topic response because someone doesn’t agree with you.
Now might be a good time to round the topic off with an “I’m right – you’re wrong” statement? No, this isn’t trolling, just a serious anticipation based on past experience. I’ve really had enough of getting somewhere discussion wise to have stupid nonsense comments made that ruin what could’ve been something enlightening for everyone who actually gave a *edited*. No ones telling you to do anything, its just talk and doesn’t deserve the bullcrap label it gets as being mutinous to the WCUGaming cause.
pinkcs
SpectatorTrolling would require my post to be deliberately incorrect with the intention to provoke negative response. It would be much easier to argue that ignoring the key points of someones thought out and on topic post to simply reply with “Obvious troll is obvious” is trolling instead.

SpectatorShottie, Para… P90, Deagle even the awps, are situational weapons. The points really should’ve been aimed more at evening the usage between Main weapons and these situational ones.
As many games use classes to increase the variety of play, CS has always had its select variety of weaponary. I think a few of the .mod scores are a touch on the harsh side (and could be brought closer to being inline with the 1pt mark if not relinquished), more so to do with opinion than with the actual unbias facts.
Although I’m not going to be restricted into only using higher point .mod weaponary, this very fact makes the changes seem to be reasoned to lower the ability of players who bring such colour and variety to the server to be seen to perform well. It really doesn’t accomplish more than that.
I’ve done a lot of websearching the past few days and have read no mention about the unbalancing effect of shotgun aim (not that it doesnt have decent aim, but it seems the gun is balanced to Valves standards and could easily be reasoned as shotguns are a point a shoot weapon and the skill in their use ‘can’ be more about positioning than overly well aimed shots), or the constant overkill caused by a P90. The only weapons that get grief are sniper rifles, its only here that people seem to want to criminalize the high point scoring potential (only met by less than 1% of the server, and sometimes only under certain conditions) that some guns afford. This means while excelling players will no longer have overly high scores with certain guns, average players will find it very difficult for those guns to be anywhere near as effective point wise as the standard rifles.
We already go through AK vs M4 wars nearly for the majority of every game, and that type of stale gameplay isn’t something that really should be aspired to.
pinkcs
SpectatorNot saying this is necessarily bad, I can kinda preceive the reasonings behind the different point .mods and I’m going to take a guess that the P90, M3 and Para have all suffered because they’re seen as “ghey” or “noob” weapons, rather than because the changes do anything dramatic to improve or fix the server?

SpectatorPut it this way… The Orange Box is the most elaborate selection of new age FPS products that we’ll see for a long time to come, will house playability that will out last current releases and future ones a like. It will probably be the most quintessential FPS release since CS:S… BF2… etc.
For anyone buying inside the UK, I pre-ordered from Virgin Megastore (see this link). At 23 GBPounds it was the best deal I’ve come across. Oh, it includes free delivery too – just no confirmation available as per when that delivery is, though my past experience with VM is good.
Inside the US $49.99 seems to be the standard low price, though you can find quite a few companies who want you to pay nearly $60 or more so watch out. Amazon have it on pre-order at $44.99 (for PC, $54.99 for XBox360) and it looks like free-shipping, therefore being my choice if I was state-side.
pinkcs
SpectatorAhh good news. Much luck with the event… shame you won’t have webcam coverage, web-based live score updates and tournament tables… …aw come on, please ^.^?

SpectatorHLstatsX premium? Thats like 15 euros for the first 3 months right? I’II put up 15 euros if that gets global ranking access (unless that causes any issues?) on the CSS server, if it helps the poor souls clinging to 1.6 too, then awesome.

I have to write a plugin for that. I’m lazy. Not sure what the above was in reference to then. Kuros?
I’m confused, if sorting out peoples point values is easy… whats the reason for the poll on resetting everyones stats? Has there been an executive discussion about some trouble with the stats we’ve all missed? It’s just seeming a little whimsical and out of the blue.
pinkcs
SpectatorActually I’m just presenting secondary reasoning to get such a component off the ground, its much better to be able to have a higher level of control over the point system than to be forced into a total reset to fix one night of point-debauchery.
Theres always potential for anything to fail, and potential for anything to work, its why its called ‘potential’.

pinkcs
SpectatorI know the work involved is pretty thankless, but a component to change point values might be a good way to deal with first offence hackers (even though hackers rarely change), or perhaps to add weight to other offences, excessive camping, ignoring objectives etc. a -minus 2 points for a person who picks up the bomb and runs away from the bombsites to hide would make people think twice.
As I said, thankless work. So sometime in the future perhaps. I think we can all grin and bare the current state of the stats for now and wait till a more appropriate solution than a total reset is on the table.

SpectatorIts difficult to work outside of the community with decisions that are supposed to be for the benefit of the community.
The reasons that groups started to use discussion forums was because the viewpoint of the community that a leadership serves is important, it just needs to be pruned, tended and in some cases matured to meet the quality that the group aims to attain.
Sometimes this can mean flat agreement or flat disagreement, but by allowing concise and conscientious discussion of the reasoning why you can sway the opinion at large in your favour or atleast away from negative rebukes. And there are rare occasions sometimes even when you flat disagree with your community and they’re not acting in their own best interest you have to let things slide on a little or perhaps take another approach.
Discussion allows deep incite into the needs, desires and required approach the community needs which only gives the leadership more control and more leverage with less textual bloodshedding.

SpectatorActually I use negative and positive type inflections to convey power to some points and to push gently on others. I am human though, and do feel a lot of personal negativity to certain server elements when its called for, I try and keep the tone of those comments though within acceptable standards – and I’m not forum banned yet so I must be succeeding atleast for now.
Erm, the WCU community.. I see this as an open discussion forum, and use it as such, even when its been insinuated elsewhere that this isn’t the case when it comes to my posts. The “we’re being told we’re doing something wrong – Attack Attack!” scenario needs to be rethought though, I know its nice to ‘cut loose’ on comments that arn’t favourable, but in the end its potentially the server you prize so highly that could lose out. Bare in mind, a lot of my sharp edged approach has become anticipation of such stinging defensive comments (to make them more difficult to make without positive explaination), the more friendly we all are to each other the less those sort of tactics become requirements.
