ParticipantScott Blue is the best for something like this. Most dorms have a large study or commons you can use, the problem is going to be getting permission to use them for gaming.

ParticipantI would caution against the summer orientation booths. You’d need people to commit to 2 days a week for 6-7 weeks during the summer. I don’t think you’re going to get that.
The very early freshmen lan is a good idea, though.

If you wanted a truely epic matchup, Adambomb vs Kuros MK3 throwdown
MasterP
ParticipantYes we could do that, in fact the LANs for next semester should already been scheduled. If that hasn’t happened it needs to ASAP along with the first meeting. Putting the dates on flyers that are handed out at VB is a really good idea.
Speaking of VB, have we already reserved a booth?

ParticipantAt it again, Lulz also hacked into the senate.gov website.
I guess on the plus side, Sony shouldn’t feel so bad. Harry Reid doesn’t secure his internets either

ParticipantWell the Euro reviews are in and they aren’t pretty. The normal hypetard, overly high-scoring reviewers like PC Gamer are rating it in the low 80s. Average user sentiment from what I’ve seen online will be in the 50s or lower.
10 hour single player. Outdated graphics. Nothing new in the gameplay mechanics department. Stale jokes. Underpowered guns. Rail gameplay. Common complaint is that it feels alot like a CoD clone. Amazon is having “difficulty” with their system and isn’t cancelling preorders.
Hail to the king, of marketing gimmicks.

I would be cautious of Major’s invites, he has a habit of inviting you then “i got a clan guy taking the spot, sorry” <_>
His clan’s guys also have a habit of getting lit as a tank and then not landing any damage on the other team. I may be a baddie but that guy was aweful and he raged at you when you tried to help him

ParticipantThey won’t know either until the service is MUCH closer to launch.
Like the day before.
MasterP
ParticipantAny cost is too much for a service that a competitor offers for free.
Even MS offers 25GB of free storage with Skydrive to every Live account.

ParticipantThis is Apple, they combat piracy by ignoring it.
MasterP
ParticipantIt’s highly unlikely. Like most other cloud-type services, Google has no means of determining whether or not what you’ve uploaded is legal or illegal.

ParticipantWorth noting is that the PS3 used boxed footage created using an SDK on a “comparable PC” for their E3 2005 demo. XBOX/360 was probably the same, it *IS* a PC after all.
At least the Wii U used footage from actually comparable hardware. It’s not the best scenario but worse has certainly been done in the past. Let’s not forget that the E3 2005 PS3 was so different from the final one that it’s hard to believe it wasn’t a fake. I mean 2 HDMI and 3 LAN ports? Get real…

any comments on the fact that they used 360/ps3 footage in their announcement video? I mean I dont know about all of you but them just sayind “it will look like this” is not the same as the console actually being able to do that.
It’s interesting that you’d say that because I read several complaints that the visuals shown didn’t look as detailed as the 360/PS3. If they truely didn’t use the Wii U’s own hardware to render them that’s pretty damned ironic IMO.
“The console’s games don’t look as good as the 360 or PS3… oh wait, nevermind.” lol

I do think extra controllers are going to set records for being $100+
Keep in mind that the controller is just a wireless receiver with a screen. The controller it self doesn’t do any processing, the Wii U streams everything to it very similarly to what OnLive does with online PC gaming. I read somewhere that there was 0 lag between the TV and controller displays.
Even though I’m the only one that cares I’ll post it anyway, Mektek is reporting that there will be no Mechwarrior5 announcement at this years E3.

ParticipantI’m glad to see Nintendo is working hard to secure 3rd party developers for the Wii U. Bringing some of the big-name titles early in the launch cycle will really help the console. What would be absolutely perfect would be to have a SSB game, a super mario game, and a zelda game as launch titles. If they do that it’s GG for store inventories.
On a PC note, this was posted on another board I frequent. It’s the BF3 tank demo in 1080p.

PC people as you said are required to use headsets, who keeps track of that? Are you telling me that if I go to the LAN I will see every single person in the PC section using them?
When I was PCVP I required it, and prior to that it was on the official list of LAN rules, but idk how or if it’s actually enforced anymore. Take a good look at the next LAN and you’ll see that everyone in the PC section is using a headset. There will probably be a very small handful that don’t but everyone who’s actually competing in tournaments will be using one. Put simply, I’ve never seen someone NOT using a headset make it past the first round of a tournament.

I can understand that it can be a big advantage, why do you think people buy them in the first place? Please don’t get me wrong, I FULLY understand why they’re using them. I just don’t think it’s sporting when playing against someone who isn’t. For online matches and tournament play I totally get why they use them and if I played XBOX with any regularity I’d use one too.
a waffle said:
Also Mitch, i’ll take you on with your challange. If you bring it up, I will play 1v1 against you.
Last I checked MS actually banned your XBOX for doing this the same as if you used pirated games. I’ll look into it some, if they don’t I might drive up for a little exhibition action

What we can do is have the two teams going against one another to either agree or disagree on the use of headsets, like we do when it comes to fightsticks for games like MvC3 and MK9.
I think this would fix the problem entirely.
MasterP
ParticipantI have nothing against competition or competitive gameplay so long as when everyone sits down to play they’re all on equal ground. Again I point to the keyboard/mouse config for the XBOX, using your arguments I’d be able to use that setup, along with my own LCD and gaming headset, during a Reach tournament and I’d wipe the floor with you guys. Even your best MLG players would walk away butthurt over it and they’d be well within their rights to be upset about it.
Also keep in mind the overall issue of precendent. Once you set one you’re stuck with whatever it leads to.

Yea fightsticks are an interesting breed of controller. In my opinion, it makes playing games such as SF4 and MK9 feel nostalgic and fun! I kinda want to get one for my Wii to try Smash on it but if it runs at the same price as the other two (MVC3 $150, MK9 $180) I may have to wait.
But getting back on topic, I remember some of the new people were complaining about the headsets because, as previously stated by MasterP, it gives an unfair advantage to people who dont have them. Someone gave me the example of being able to hear footsteps behind a person in COD4 or the firing of a silenced pistol (which should not be possible without headsets).
I hear that, I’ve got a $200 PC joystick. Specialty controllers definately increase the fun factor.
I’ve played CoD enough to know that I wouldn’t want to be using speakers or a TV in an online match. Same with BFBC2 or HaloPC. You can actually tell when someone is using speakers because they’re the ones that never hear you sneaking around or take cover when you snipe at them and miss. I have to say, I kinda prefer playing against people like that

MasterP
ParticipantDon’t mention it.
No seriously don’t, I was supposed to get permission first

ParticipantThread moved to GCNews as requested.
I watched some of the Microsoft keynote on Spike, of all channels, and as you said G4 is doing 24/7 coverage. This year’s E3 seems to be much more popular than in previous years.
Not to be fanboyish but I can’t wait for more wii 2 details.
One thing I can’t understand at all is why apple would host the WWDC the same week as E3. I mean it’s not like they’re going to get ANY media coverage lol
MasterP
Participantlol I know. I was referring to people who brought in off brands they thought were superior to officially-branded or those who bought in “new” controllers and then refused to share them. I’m guilty of that last one but after paying $50 for one of the original wavebirds there’s no way I’m letting it out of my sight
They’re too *edited* hard to find now lolFightsticks are kindof an odd exception to my earlier comment because they don’t technically give you any advantage. It’s like preferring a GCN controller in mario kart wii or SSBB.

ParticipantThe gaming news section is linked directly to the homepage which is why it requires exec permissions to create threads there.
We used to allow everyone to create new threads there but some /b/tards thought they’d be funny and posted nonsense threads there. We can’t have nice things if people don’t behave.
MasterP
ParticipantThe PC section requires everyone to use a headset. Everyone is on the equal footing.
EDIT: Even with “inferior” hardware, the PC section is almost always skill based. I got my first premium headset ($75) at a LAN, won it using a $20 headset. Also got my first premium mouse ($45) at a lan, won it using a $15 logitech. Also got my first premium mousepad ($25) at a lan, won it using… nothing. Actually I think I was using a piece of printer paper but w/e. IIRC most of that was won using a laptop that was absolutely terrible. Nickname can attest to how horrible it was.
MasterP
ParticipantThe console section is extremely loud and allowing the use headphones gives a distinct advantage that the common player will not have.
Like I said above, if your goal is to create an ultra-competitive environment to the point of having headphones on consoles you’re going to have a hard time attracting those who just come to have fun, which is around 80% of the people that attend events. The more competitive something is treated, the less fun it becomes. That is true for every game on every gaming platform. Your goal is to find the common ground in the middle, where competition play is still fun. If you have players taking the win so seriously that they’re bringing headphones to get it, you need to swing back towards fun a little. IMO, anyway. At that point the game has changed from “who is better” to “who’s bringing the best equalizer” and while we’ve always had people bring their “special” or “good” controllers (lol yeah ok) we’ve never allowed players to so blatantly give themselves an advantage over the others.
What happens when someone brings a keyboard and mouse to a Halo Reach tournament? You’ve already started down the slippery slope, you’d almost have to allow it. Even MS said doing that would be unfair.
MasterP
ParticipantThese same guys also hacked Nintendo, like the day after hacking Sony. They either didn’t steal, or weren’t able to steal, any company or user info. In fact the only thing they claim to have gotten from it is a “config file.” Nintendo immediately acknowledged the breach of security and said they were already fixing it. No Nintendo online services were affected.
MasterP
ParticipantLess and less so every day, I imagine…
lol
MasterP
ParticipantDidn’t MS ban people for doing that?
MasterP
ParticipantHate to necro threads but did you guys really let console players use headsets during the LAN?
