Participantsomeone obviously has too much disposable income….

ParticipantThat’s a rather expensive way to shoot $50 worth of ammo.
Some of those comments are epic. It doesn’t matter how redneck you are, if you can afford a gold-plated .50 desert eagle you can definately afford to go out back and target shoot at a broken PS3. The commentors are just jealous that he’s got $3500 worth of guns in the truck and doesn’t hesitate at shooting a $500 console.
It’s always funny trying to watch someone “bump fire” a rifle. It’s hard as hell because you’re only holding it with 1 hand.

ParticipantA few of the youtube trolls mentioned that his yellow ring of death was fixable. By fixable they probably mean send it to Sony and get it reformatted but hey let’s not split hairs here.

ParticipantPSN has been back up for a couple days btw

ParticipantNot all of it…

ParticipantIt essentially is up.. the only thing that isn’t up is the store.
Online gaming resumes.
May 17, 2011 at 2:33 pm #108663MasterP
ParticipantYeah but the store is the only part that was ever really compromised. In reality it should have been the only thing that was taken down.

Username /passwords were compromised. This would have allowed for account hijacking. Everything needed to be taken down.

ParticipantAs soon as you start linking credit card, address, and other store-related information to an online account, it ceases to be a “multiplayer account” and becomes a “store account”. There’s not a single online service where that doesn’t hold true. The store was the only service that was truely affected on the long term and in reality it’s been vulnerable since it was first brought online.
Regardless, they could have simply released a version number only update that made everyone reset their passwords. You know, similar to what they did after it came back up.
The rest of the security could have been fixed by firing their security team, the entirety of it, and contracting with someone for the short-term while they replaced their internal team. All the temporary team had to do was install actual software and hardware firewalls, you know, the kind that the rest of the business world uses. I haven’t heard of them actually firing or hiring anyone, I guess the Japanese weren’t too fond of Einstein: “You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it.”
If WCU can manage to secure their network using off-brand hardware and an all-talk, no-action CISSP I have no sympathy for any company that gets hacked.

ParticipantI’m pretty sure we’ve already established how Sony doesn’t know what they are doing / massively screwed up.

All I was saying is that I will get to play multiplayer ps3 games before the end of May.

ParticipantFair enough.
Sony seems to be giving a blanket 45 day bonus to SOE accounts but AFAIK their PC MMO games have plummeted and most are reporting weird lag spikes and trouble with forming parties. This is common when implementing newly developed security protocols but it usually only occurs in late alpha and very early beta stages, not in already released games with $14.99/month subscribers <_>

ParticipantWell this certainly didn’t take long.. Maybe sony should just give teh hackers what they want
PSN password reset site hacked…
May 18, 2011 at 1:18 pm #108671MasterP
ParticipantSeriously, the security team, fire them all. They don’t have a clue.
Once they can login into your account, can’t they go to your account profile and get your CC info?
May 18, 2011 at 1:22 pm #108672Lemm
ParticipantI don’t even know. I just found out about this .. I will have to check when I get home. I know PSN stored the CC info if you elected it to do that, but I’m not sure if it displays all the digits if you tried looking it up.

Participantyeah this is beyond “we messed up” to the point of “we are completely incompetent”
May 18, 2011 at 3:22 pm #108674MasterP
ParticipantEven if they can only get the last 4 digits, it goes a long way in helping to crack the hashed database they got 3 weeks ago. That’s assuming the db was encrypted. Given the continual failure of Sony at anything involving the word security I’m leaning towards the notion that it wasn’t.

ParticipantI haven’t been home to test it but the Playstation Store is reportedly back up.
June 2, 2011 at 1:34 pm #108758MasterP
ParticipantAbout time. My developer PS3 has a ton of free, uh I mean “paid for”, content to catch up on.
The “welcome back” content is still unavailable. Gee, what a surprise…

ParticipantThe words needed to describe this have left me. Sony has reached a point of failure I previously thought impossible.

ParticipantThe best part is that they store all the names/passwords in plain text format.
June 3, 2011 at 10:55 am #108765MasterP
ParticipantFree message boards were more secure than that 10 years ago. Absolutely unacceptable.
June 3, 2011 at 4:17 pm #108766Lemm
ParticipantIt’s amazing how little news coverage this is getting.
It’s really hard to understand why no one is doing any in depth coverage of Sony’s Firesale ’11.
June 6, 2011 at 12:40 am #108775MasterP
ParticipantThese same guys also hacked Nintendo, like the day after hacking Sony. They either didn’t steal, or weren’t able to steal, any company or user info. In fact the only thing they claim to have gotten from it is a “config file.” Nintendo immediately acknowledged the breach of security and said they were already fixing it. No Nintendo online services were affected.
June 14, 2011 at 2:14 am #108839MasterP
ParticipantAt it again, Lulz also hacked into the senate.gov website.
I guess on the plus side, Sony shouldn’t feel so bad. Harry Reid doesn’t secure his internets either

Participantsome of the services are back up, and they’re offering some freebies to make up for the downtime and to lure their customers back into the PSN services
