If you want to use Fedora, but don’t like the developmental software, try CentOS. It is basically RedHat without all the RedHat network package and support built in. Lots of places use it as a very stable and solid platform. My web host uses it for all their services and Metrostat uses it as well.

I’m currently running it on that temporary gaming server I let you guys borrow a while back.

Graduated. I still have my Student Computing job at WCU. Doing that while Amy does her internship. Then… who knows!

<sarcasm> But the best gaming OS out there is Windows Mojave. It’s amazing. It looks super cool too. </sarcasm>

Best client, yes. Best for gaming? Not a chance. Win98 idling with just Explorer and Systray was the bomb back in the day.

I agree, but you had to reboot between each game for best performance. I remember having to do that for Age of Empires. Sometimes we’d all that reboot breaks and rejoin.

I really enjoy seeing the sidebar gadget showing this massive list of 8 cores, and RAM hovering around 10%. I just put on Titan Quest and maxed everything out without lag. Now to install Crysis…

    check it.

If you’re ever on campus, swing by the CRIB and take a look. It’s running gOS right now. I gotta come up with a method of cooling the oil because after a few days it starts to get pretty warm. Usually you send the oil through a radiator, but if I did that it might get messy. I’m planning on doing something with a huge bolt, thermoelectric cooler, and a leftover HS/fan. Anyway, since I took the video I put a 120mm fan in there so you could see it slowly turn. Pretty fun.

    1. People that have just gotten familiar with Vista will have no trouble with 7.

    2. Unless they REALLY fixed something in SP4, Windows 2K was NEVER good for gaming. 3dMark used to give me double the score on 98 than 2000 with the same hardware. I guess that could be nVidia’s drivers too, but double? I dunno… I guess if you run less operating system, you get more hardware out of it. Along that train of thought, DOS must be the best for gaming. lol

    3. KDE has gotten better. I used to be all gnome, but they’ve made improvements that would allow me to accept either.

thanks. My virtual machines will love me for that RAM upgrade. You should see what I’m currently running and you’d realize that I probably had this beast coming to me. Athlon 64 3500+, 1.5 GB of crappy RAM, 320 gig hard drive, and an eVGA 8500 GT that I upgraded to 6 months ago. I currently get a BIOS warning every time I turn it on and it’s not always the same one.

    “Self-improvement is masturbation”

That being said… I upgrade whenever my $$ is not going to more important things. I do a full rebuild every 3 years and small improvements in between. Since my last rebuild I got a new video card, more RAM, and a bigger hard drive.

As I recall someone actually came up to the Mobile CRIB desk and asked if we had Mojave yet and if we sold it. They were all excited about it.

go to terminal and do an “apt-get update” and then a “sudo synaptic”

It’s a package manager that let’s you install all kinds of stuff. Some of these once installed will appear in the GUI menu, others will just drop themselves in seemingly random places in the filesystem. Anyway, it’s at least good to see what’s out there.

Terminal is tricky at first, but if you ever need a good explanation on how to use a particular command, just type “man” space and the command. It’s short for manual and will walk you through the syntax and options.

Ubuntu is a good place to start. Good luck!

Right, so the thing is this. If you want a more robust operating system you have to have something run it. Just like if you want to add a bigger graphics card, you have to have a bigger power supply. Windows Vista is more robust than windows XP. Like it or not, someday you will need the robustness it has to offer. Even if you skip it and go for Windows 7, you’re still upping the power demand. Plus, Windows 7 will inevitably start out just like every windows OS.. buggy.

Seriously, if you have the hardware, go get Windows Vista now. If you’re still a student here you can get Ultimate for $10, but get it now because the budget cuts aren’t looking good to support that next year.

Linux is great for webservers. It’s especially great for webservers with multiple domains, multiple users, etc. It’s good stuff.

For game servers…? Well… maybe, but it gets complicated, as you can imagine.

So I had a meeting with Dr. Huffman which was very helpful. Planning is going good, but this semester has been pretty rough on me. I promise I will get this off the ground eventually, but it will take some time. I’ll put together a meeting in the UC, probably the Catamount or Cardinal room. There we’ll talk about the campus’s needs in a Linux group, how to keep it alive and interesting, and what to do. I’ll keep you posted, you keep generating ideas.

1> Dude, go talk to Scott Huffman in the Chemistry floor of the Natural Science building, he’d definitely help you with your efforts.

2> About jobs and linux experience – i know exactly what you mean

3> I’m a former member of the old club, and I’m thrilled to hear it might reappear on campus

4> You might be able to find in the forum archives or something mention of me gaming from a linux machine – wine + cs:s and cs1.6 was terrible but so much fun. my point – gaming and linux need not be enemies

5> I’m rarely on the internet, but if you have any questions, post me a forum PM or something and I’ll do what I can to get you answers

6> Lastly – Be careful around WCU’s IT and Student Computing talking about linux… they get nervous for some reason. Though not impossible to have a good conversation with them about it, the power structure of IT/SC leans heavily toward Windows. Or so it appears to me.

Very True, Student Computing and IT Services in general has appeared pretty much anti-linux in the past. However, most of this is due to the massive under-funding we have, and the fact that we’re generally overworked and don’t have time to learn Linux. Sure, we mess with it a little on our own, but most of us have other hobbies and a life outside work. If we say we support something, people expect us to know it in and out and we aren’t really comfortable with that.

Secondly, I’m a Student computing coordinator… meaning that I help manage Student Computing. I am full-time salaried staff (as well as being a part-time student). Therefore I have a little more swing than being an Student Computing Consultant. My (our) boss is really great and very open-minded. While I’m sure we won’t see official support or funding thrown at this, I’m sure he would support my efforts. There is actually a good bit of in-the-closet open source interest among staff members in IT, and I think I can harness that. If you ask around IT Staff members now, it’s pretty rare that you’ll find someone that hates macs now… so things are diversifying at least.

Hopefully I can shave off some resources and get something going. I’ll fill everyone in. Thanks!

Good feedback guys. I’ll see what I can work in. I will need an actual topic though rather than make announcements for the gaming club. Some of my previous topics have been:

    Skydrive

Free Stuff that the university provides

    Fake Antivirus Programs

    Internet Services

Got anything else that the common (not necessarily IT oriented) student would enjoy hearing?
