SpectatorI don’t know about most of you, but I have a system for which I upgrade my PC. I have a seperate system per component…as follows…
Motherboard:
Upgrade Frequency: Once a year.
Budget: 250-300$
Current Motherboard: Gigabyte P45
Video Card
Upgrade Frequency: Once a year. Sometimes twice…depending.
Budget: 600$ at the most.
Current Video Card: 2x ATI Radeon HD4870 via CrossfireX
RAM:
Upgrade Frequency: Once a year.
Budget: Anywhere between 2-400$, depending on kit deals.
Current RAM: 8GB GSKILL DDR2 1033.
Hard Drive:
Upgrade Frequency: When I hit an uncomfortable low in space.
Budget: Whatever I need to for a WD or Seagate of 500gb minimum.
Current HD: 2x500GB WD Caviar Internal, 1x2TB NAS.
Is anybody as big a geek as me? lol

SpectatorI upgrade alot but not that much. My brother upgrades every 3 months so i usually get his stuff cuz im to lazy to go out and get it myself. I dont replace everything but maybe once every two years. Things I upgrade the most are ram and graphics cards.

SpectatorSpend $1500-2000 every 2 years and rebuild the entire thing at once. Upgrading mid-cycle is a perfect way to waste money.

I’m the type of person that when a game has any lower than 60 fps, I get another/a new video card.
April 8, 2009 at 7:42 pm #78121MasterP
SpectatorIf you’re happy with what you’ve got, don’t upgrade. It’s stupid to upgrade mid-cycle because you’re either buying parts for a motherboard that is obsolete or buying a new motherboard and putting obsolete parts in it.
As much as you think my model makes no sense, upgrading video cards once a year is stupid. More than once, idiotic. Spend $300-500 on a card and use it for 3 years.

I disagree. I had no reason to upgrade my CPU/mobo but after 2 years upgraded my video card. Also ram upgrades and hard drive upgrades are something even you do so yeah… stfu.

Also, ram amount =/= ram speed. My ram upgrade wasn’t what he meant in the OP.

Spectator“Self-improvement is masturbation”
That being said… I upgrade whenever my $$ is not going to more important things. I do a full rebuild every 3 years and small improvements in between. Since my last rebuild I got a new video card, more RAM, and a bigger hard drive.

Spectatormy upgrade =
going from
(nice case, pentium 4 650, 1GB ddr2 ram, 160GB hdd, 1x Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT, 1x Audigy 2 ZS sound card, high-speed university internet)
to
(blah case, athlon 64 x2 5000+, 2GB ddr2 ram (some recycled), 160GB hdd (recycled), onboard video, onboard audio, drive-to-town internet)
and it pwns.
by the way, that’s the only upgrade I’ve made, really, as far as a system. unless you want me to detail getting headphones, usb hubs, and all that mundane stuff. and I don’t plan to upgrade past that for at least a decade, if the hardware holds up…

SpectatorAlright, I will play just for fun.
CPU:
Core 2 Duo E6600 OC’d to 3.0GHz. Purchased: December 2006
Motherboard:
ASUS P5B-E, P965 chipset. Purchased: December 2006
RAM:
2x1GB OCZ Platinum DDR2-800. Purchased: December 2006
2x2GB Mushkin DDR2-800. Purchased: December 2007
VC:
EVGA Geforce GTX 260 Superclocked 896MB. Purchased: September 2008
HDD:
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB. Purchased: February 2009
Hitachi 1TB (first gen). Purchased: December 2007
So as you can see some of my parts are almost 2 1/2 years old, yet I see little reason to upgrade them since I still get excellent performance in every game I play. Thus I suppose I partly subscribe to MasterP’s theory, but I am not as naive as him to assume that upgrading graphics cards once a year is idiotic. Well maybe once a year is too often. Maybe once every 2 years.
Also note MasterP’s inconsistencies (just for fun)

SpectatorIntel Core 2 Quad Q9450 OC 3.2 ghz
XFX Nvidia 780i SLI mobo
4GB Corsiar XMMS2 ocd 4-3-3-9. 800mhz for 1:1 sync with CPU
VC – Evga 9800gx2 (wish I had bought a 280 but meh)
HDD 3x 250GB Seagate Barracuda (normally in RAID 5)
I had the option of upgrading to Core i7 earlier this year and decided it would be a waste of time. Tell me what this setup couldn’t run?
April 9, 2009 at 1:18 pm #78323Derrick LeBrocq
SpectatorThats awfully great, but…I see your setup, and raise you a monster:
Intel Quad Core i7 3.2ghz
Gigabyte DS3R-P45 mobo
8GB G-SKILL 1033mhz Super sync, with extra heat sinks
2xATI Radeon HD4870, 1 512mb, 1 1GB.
HDD: 2x500GB SATA2 WD Caviar, 1x2TB NAS, 1×2 bay enclosure, with 2TB, and my home server pc, that has 2x750gb SATA2 WD Caviar’s.

Plus…there’s my case…

SpectatorLet me point out that I’m not saying that you don’t have better parts than I do. (Better set up is debatable) I’m just saying that there is absolutely no reason for me to spend money on an upgrade anytime soon. It would be absolutely POINTLESS.
April 9, 2009 at 1:52 pm #78340Derrick LeBrocq
SpectatorI’m not saying your system won’t run pretty much anything thrown at it:) I will say that those 3DMARKS aren’t far off from mine. Mine are only at a max 20 points higher in some places. I would however say that my setup is awesome:P I have a crossfire mobo, crossfire cards, kickass ram, and a crapload of space.

April 9, 2009 at 2:31 pm #78345Kuros
SpectatorI used to build cars. Now I hate them. Once I ripped a 78 camaro from window to window. Not fun. Last engine chassis dyno at 596 rwhp. 1970 z28, nice rare car.
