SpectatorI dunno, i think the general public is so used to Windows based OS’s that throwing and linux distro on a netbook takes away from sales.

Shooting you with an AWP might be an exception. AWPing you would be a most ironic death I should think.
Oh by the way, did you know my AWP runs on Linux?

Haha just thought this was funny. I have a server running Gentoo and my laptop Im using in Australia has primarily Ubuntu, with dual boot to Windows 7 as secondary. I love it. I guess Im in the 97.9th percentile of geeks

SpectatorMe and Adambomb once tried to get our gaming club box moved to linux but IT wouldn’t allow it since they don’t have much (if any) knowledge with it and would not be able to monitor, assist, troubleshoot, etc…It is really superior for memory intensive uses and uptime which is ideal for a web/game box.
As adam37 said, everyone has grown up on windows OS’s and that’s all they care to know.

Spectatorwell we could move to linux now if we wanted to but… why bother?

SpectatorI used to have a programming professor who would frequently extol the virtues of Linux. I am fairly certain he was a homosexual, but really that’s an unrelated subject.

Here’s the problem, once the seniors this year graduate it’ll be hard enough for the on campus people to do anything with the servers in Windows. You start throwing OSes that make absolutely no sense into the mix and you might as well just disable all remote access to the servers because the same amount of work will be getting done.
Windows Server works. In fact it works pretty *edited* well. We get the most expensive version of it for free. As it sits now I don’t believe we can lose.

SpectatorThe entire reason that Adambomb myself and the other executives at the time decided to move the box to Windows was that EVERYONE knows how to do the most basic functions in Windows. You login to a desktop rather than a terminal prompt and it’s really easy to teach new presidents and webmasters how we do things on the box. That was the webserver, the same would hold true with TRON. Why move it something that new execs may or may not understand when we already have something they do?
Linux does rock though.

SpectatorLinux is great for webservers. It’s especially great for webservers with multiple domains, multiple users, etc. It’s good stuff.
For game servers…? Well… maybe, but it gets complicated, as you can imagine.
