omg, falcon you walked to walmart.. you could have taken the jackson county bus for 50cent, goes all over sylva. This is what i had to rely on my first year until i could save up nuff to get a minipedovan

lol… yeah, i found out about this, but before that I was too much of a non-existent schedule type… plus i got that old-timey instinct in me, that says “walk everywhere unless your horse is awake”… :cowboy: (and also, I was training hard for my 4am beer hike. bummer that I’ve been deprived of that opportunity)

on other thoughts, you was able to actually save up? dood, i was working and obsessively not spending, and my savings account was decaying faster than a snowman on the vegas strip at 2pm on a blazin summer day… :o

in any case, i think that emphasizes my point even more :P (walking was still better than on-campus shopping)

download and upload speed are more just rates than a measure of how fast it gets there… analogous to how wide a race track is, and therefore how many cars can race along side-by-side. ping time is how fast it actually gets there, analogous to how fast racers travel on said track. I don’t think upload speed would be a problem, to be honest, once you get to 1mb/s.

it may be more of just the time that all the different connections take to talk to each other… best diagnostic for that is like MP said, (if you’re in windows) open the command prompt (most universal method: <win> + <r>, then in the run dialog box type in cmd) and then when you get the console type in tracert gaming.wcu.edu… post those results (at least the times, the ip addresses are fairly irrelevant – just mark where your modem and router are on the list, if you know how to distinguish between them) and peeps can prolly draw better conclusions about what’s tying you up.

dumb question… is that a monster-sized 3.5″ floppy drive (big drive, small slot) or is it one of them 5.25″ floppy drives (big drive, bigger slot, accepts the truly floppy floppies)?

on a side note, i’m bummed to say that i can’t be the interested buyer… not plannin any runs to texas, and to cheap for the shipping costs. and the thing’d be collecting dust for at least another decade before i can make use of it…

i remember pulse working a while back in fedora, but I ain’t had the graphics horsepower to be doing anything since my computer scrambled at WCU. I do remember that alsa was the way to go with wine, though. However, I really doubt the sound technologies were functional the last time i used it, it pretty much emulated a stereo sound adapter and that was it (no 7.1 sound, or EAX, or what have you)

alright, i’ve seen this one tied into microsoft… both when microsoft advertised it in the Visual Studio news feed and since their name’s stamped all across it. it’s legit, and I admit i’m surprised. i need to look and see when to be taking Access ’07, i just pretty much aced a class on it, with the book bragging that it fully prepares the student for the exam, so heh.

bahahaha… a chance to bash WCU? yay. so, lemme see, none o your voting options appeal to me.

How do I feel about WCU? It has its great points and its horrors. More great points than horrors, but meh.

Will I stay there for my undergrad studies? I assume that’s a rhetorical question. But seriously, no.

    3rd question: rainbow trout…

Lemme see. From the standpoint of teachers and students and social stuff, WCU is great, awesome, fantastic, and I mean it. The majors, there’s several that are fantastic, and there’s a few that they should offer a disclaimer with. *cough*BSEEBSSE*cough*. Administratively… yeah. I better keep my mouth shut in the interests of the Club’s future (since I’m on your forums). Food, housing, commerce, etc.: It was worth the walk to Wal-Mart (miles of walking, for those of you that ain’t locals) for everything but housing, and housing… I dunno if there is any good answer to that. The one perk I’ll credit them for is around 2-3am the dorm room network bandwidth is phenomenal.

Bah, I registered and thought I could show, but the family made some last-second plans and I’m gonna have to be there… depending on the vehicle situation, I may get a free hour or so to cross the mountain and be a spectator at the LAN, but it’s not exactly likely

    my upgrade =

    going from

    (nice case, pentium 4 650, 1GB ddr2 ram, 160GB hdd, 1x Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT, 1x Audigy 2 ZS sound card, high-speed university internet)

    to

(blah case, athlon 64 x2 5000+, 2GB ddr2 ram (some recycled), 160GB hdd (recycled), onboard video, onboard audio, drive-to-town internet)

    and it pwns.

by the way, that’s the only upgrade I’ve made, really, as far as a system. unless you want me to detail getting headphones, usb hubs, and all that mundane stuff. and I don’t plan to upgrade past that for at least a decade, if the hardware holds up…

Rule #1: Survive each round at all costs

Rule #2: Whenever possible, steal points from the gamer that’s currently going to be the last guy to qualify. If you steal them from the #1 gamer, then you distribute the points more evenly and bring more people into competition with yourself for qualifying. (If you can end up being the lowest qualifier, with a significant point gap to the first disqualified gamer, then you don’t have to worry about a last-second upset)

Rule #3: Blend in to the qualifiers. Everyone knows to go after the #1 gamer, because if they team up and get rid of them early, then they might have a better chance of winning. So, if you hide around #3 or #4, you won’t be the prized target.

Rule #4: When in doubt, throw items across the room to distract your competition

Rule #5: When you have finally made it to victory, brag and show off like you mean it

Actually, well, don’t look like I’ll make it to this one. Being that it is February 21, it does two things… first, I have a family event that may or may not fall on that date… I dunno but it might. but even more significant, it falls in competition with a meeting I hope to attend to tend to things that got neglected in the past… a little cryptic, I know, but not that I don’t want to be specific about my plans, but rather just not toss it out into the public domain of the internets… pm me or call me if you are curious. But yeah, even though I could prolly attend this meeting on campus at WCU and be done with it in under an hour and game the rest of the day, I’ve actually got higher priorities than gaming this time around (again). However, my plans for the undetermined date of the second LAN of the semester, if it does happen, is to have no other plans that day and show up to enjoy one heck of a LAN, as well as the post-LAN festivities, and so on.

*reads up on the history of the thread*…

    0_0…

    mmkay… a few things i picked out, to summarize…

Due to snow and a collection of other circumstances (all qualified reasons for not convening) there was no meeting… and ppl are angry with Bitey?… and we’re trying to figure out why no new recruits…

yeah, snow and other things mentioned definitely do happen, and get in the way. +1 to the Club if the meeting were to be rescheduled.

ppl are angry with Bitey about no meeting, or something of that nature? c’mon people, life happens from time to time, and mother nature gets cranky sometimes too. I think that should be a non-topic for anger

    and no new recruits….

    *thinks*

yeah, that one’s always one that will come back to bite you in the keester. I would actually point some fair share of the blame to the new freshman class restrictions, like living in scott dorm and all. without the ability to mingle, they truly are isolated from the rest of the student body, especially considering a majority of the freshman class is divisible into a few common source schools, which means that when isolated as much as they are already, they will deepen the rift and stay in the groups they were back in the high school days. considering those two factors, recruiting’s going to be a tough sell. to really pick up those groups, you may have to investigate how to make yourself visible to the freshman body. that’s less of a club factor and more an environmental effect.

also, just prodding, you’ll need to extend the knowledge to the new recruits that especially if they don’t see their preference of game in our current lineup, they need to lobby for their favorite(s). I speak that one from first-hand experience… coming out of high school I was a fan of things built around the quake-model engines – unreal tournament being the most obvious. when I spoke up, I actually found support, and thus a new member was forged. I REALLY wasn’t a fan of anything built around Valve software. (TBH I still despise Valve and all its new minions on steam). but, after the original draw for UT, then I dabbled a bit in cs:s and found that that community actually made the game bearable, even pleasant. and thus, some time later, a cs:s CL was forged. etc etc.

follow that logic, that we have to find some access point to the freshman body, and that we have to really show them that if they don’t see something they play that they can still get a stake in the club, and you’ll really blow the doors open on a new Club body.

btw, when y’all get that meeting rescheduled and all, post it and i’ll keep posted on when to expect a LAN… peace!

and thanks too. I’m still a bit miffed about the whole overwhelming dominance of Microsoft in my tech classes (like at WCU, and high school, and middle school, and elementary school, and…), but that’s our lovely worlds of businesses and academia for ya. aside from that, I’ve heard a few negatives about HCC but it’s still preferable for me at this time.

I’ve definitely run YDL. and I know a bit about yaboot – it’s nowhere near as friendly as GRUB but certainly helps since it’s all that they got on PPC. (big hint – if you’re snatching a hard drive from a previously Windows PC, format that sucker and restructure the MBR for the mac to read it, or else you’ll have a functioning system that won’t boot. google hid that one from me for a while)

though these may or may not be on the list, some cards I do know from past first-hand experience:

ATI TV Wonder Pro PCI- decent card, receives analog tv signals (mine was manufactured pre-DTV), no idea of HD capabilities, accepts 1 COAX cable input (raw cable, if your provider doesn’t encrypt or scramble their signal; analog antenna; RF out from vcr’s, game systems, dvd players, cable/satellite boxes); 1 S-VIDEO input (s-video out from vcr’s, game systems, dvd players, cable/satellite boxes, cameras, camcorders); 1 COMPOSITE input (yellow, red+white cables – composite out from vcr’s, game systems, dvd players, cable/satellite boxes, cameras, camcorders). no component hookup. (audio from s-video and composite hookups are mutually exclusive). Drivers only compatible with 32-bit Windows XP or better (no 64-bit). open source driver support in *nix OS’es. still functions. Windows use presents considerable delay, near impossible to game through. *nix platforms – perfection, no delay.

ATI TV Wonder Pro 650 (pci slot)- undetermined card quality – driver incompatibilities with the system I had running at the time. Receives analog and digital tv signals, box claims HD support, accepts 2 COAX cable input (see above for this and all other descriptions); 1 S-VIDEO input; 1 COMPOSITE input. no component hookup. (audio from s-video and composite hookups are mutually exclusive). Drivers not compatible with 64-bit Windows Vista, OEM software install failed on 32-bit Windows Vista. No idea if it has media center compatibility, I was running Vista Business. last I checked (while back) no open source driver support in *nix OS’es. At the time (>1 year ago) I could not get the thing to work, and ATI said my platform (32- and 64-bit Vista) was currently unsupported. returned to store for a full refund.

neither came with remote in the box, but one was available for purchase through ATI or online retailers. Would also probably accept any generic media pc remote.
