Ask Brent Seward what the current EE high score is. We played that thing for hours last year in C++ class and I know we got at least one person to 3000.

My computers only crash on CS1.6 and it’s more of a “this game sucks and you shouldn’t play it” warning than anything else.

Just an FYI, I’m taking my laptop instead of the monster desktop for obvious reasons. It plays CSS on high with some AA and AF and TF2 on high with no filtering. Both at 1440×900. I’m also taking my monitor, MX518, and G11 so I should be good to go, just no liquid cooling. :(

I hate to point this out to you but as a Sony stockholder you should be uber-*edited*ed at the PS3, all it has done since launch is cost Sony money and dig into the profit margins which used to be quite high. The fack that, on release day, Sony was losing upwards of $200 per console sold should have cost someone their job. I don’t know what their profit margin is on the PS3 now but I know for a fact they are still losing money on every console sold so it’s not really that smart to be a Sony stockholder right now because the failure of this system could lead to ultimate collapse of Sony. Not to single out Sony, Microsoft hasn’t made a single penny on the XBOX or XBOX360 but they have the infrastructure to absorb the loss. The only console that has made money so far is the Wii, which Nintendo makes at least $50 profit per console.

The PS3 will NOT be seen as the ideal Blu-Ray player because, as I predicted a few days back, the prices of existing players is going to drop dramatically over the next year. As retailers are dumping HD-DVD players for whatever they can get for them, the price of Blu-Rays is already falling in sales ads. The PS3 will only be the ideal player so long as it is cheaper than the competition and while it may be able to compete with the player market for the time being it certainly won’t be able to come summer, especially now that the HD-DVD manufacturers are going to retool to compete in the new market.

The following is the NPD US Hardware Sales report:

    NPD_HARDWARE_nov06-jan08.png

It took over a year for the PS3 to start outselling the PS2 and it certainly isn’t because there wasn’t any to sell. As it stands now, the Wii is predicted to overtake the XBOX360 in total sales by the end of 2008. If the current sales trends stay as they have been, and there isn’t any reason to believe recent events will skyrocket PS3 sales, the PS3 will have less than 1/3 of the sales of it’s 2 competitors at the end of 2008.

Sure the PS3 is probably the most powerful of the systems but they are hard as hell to make games for which is why a number of developers have brought in 3rd party coders to make the PS3 ports of games instead of coding it with their own people. This can, and has, led to inferior versions of the same game being released on the PS3 as compared to the XBOX360.

You realize the picture doesn’t actually get better right? A video can’t get any better than what’s already on the disc.

Took you 12 minutes to get 116k points? Wtf is that? What’d you go 1 line at a time?

Btw, you’re going to be owing me money shortly. My practice in class got 105k and I wasn’t really trying.

All of that is easily fixable by patching the server-side netcode to disregard stats from games that magically “drop” for a few seconds. If there was no benefit from it they wouldn’t do it. They could also write a server-side module that monitors packets to and from the hosting XBOX and log whenever it pauses or drops players with a penalty of not being able to host anymore games after a certain number of them. This would have the added bonus of preventing players with poor or unstable connections from hosting as well.

They never fixed standbying or bridging. They pretty much just banned all the modders or at least prevented most of them from accessing the matchmaking playlists. I’m assuming the standby issue and bridging is what you meant by modem pause.

Modem pause is the PC term for standby. I was told it was fixed by MS in a patch but didn’t play XBOX back then so wasn’t sure. I wasn’t under the impression you had to have a modded XBOX to use the standby feature.

It’s hard to patch animation issues. It’s not that they didn’t want to. Same thing with the super bounces in Halo 2, do you think they really had the time and manpower to fix the gaps in geometry that caused that? And then make everyone redownload all the content that’s already on the disc?

If they could fix the “modem pause” bug they should have been able to fix about anything there. To my knowledge that was pretty deep in the netcode.

MasterP, that is a GREAT Idea; we have WAY too many problems with ppl getting kicked/crashes that mess up scores that this would be a big asset. At worst, I am sure Liam or someone else could make such a plugin.

I’m going to get with the clan that uses this plugin on their Gungame and will try to get their entire config from it. They have an very well made gungame config that mixes several different plugins and is full almost 24/7. If I can get the config I’d like to reopen our own Source Gungame server using a variant of their clan’s config and see if we can fill it up.

My point in bringing that up was to say that using glitches/exploits in a competitive settings was not limited to SSBM, but one of the most competitive console shooters in recent years.

I knew what you meant but my point was that the glitching in that game has been there for years and MS has refused to patch it.

I remember a year ago reading an interview with Peter Moore. He actually said “The consumer’s choosing HD-DVD.”

They’ve been saying this for a while. If you watch and pay attention the media usually hypes over the losing product every time.

I’ve been calling this battle from day 1 but oddly enough they’ve both been losing overall until now. The exclusive deals did kill both because it turned 90% of consumers off. No one wants to buy 2 seperate $600 movie players just so they can brag about the HD picture that can’t be distinguished from a normal picture. Before it’s over with, Blu-Ray may die as well.

Just a heads up, my next prediction is the influx of cheap Blu-Ray players and the further decline of PS3 sales. As Oh Malley said, Blu-Ray only helps the PS3 if it’s the cheapest player on the market and for the past year it has been. That’s about to change and Sony may regret pushing MS out of the fight so fast.

Also, if you’ll noticed the Blu-Ray format is capable of a 4-layered disc. Sony obviously learned from what killed their Betamax.

I would try to list them for CS so you non-smashers could identify with it, but I dont know them, hence the reason I always go like 2-15 in our pub server :o

There aren’t any glitches like the ones in SSBM in any of the CS/CSS/DoD games for the plain and simple reason that complaints to Valve got them fixed. It’s not hard for a “noob” to sit down and do well in PC games so long as they’ve played similar games before. At 2007.3 I won the DoDS tournament having never even played the game and have won 2007.4 and 2008.1 with very little practice since day 1. The difference is that real, actual talent is all the matters in most PC games.

Since you obviously don’t have a problem using these “advanced techniques” perhaps, in the interest of fairness, you could list and describe how to use all the “advanced techniques” that are used by “pros” so that the “noobs” can learn them. It would go a long way in easing the situation if people could at least prepare to be raped and have a clue as to what’s going on.

I think this does need to be discussed by those in charge of the console tournaments. Keep in mind that if 50% of the CS/CSS players felt someone was taking advantage of a glitch to win that person would be asked to stop. This same burden of fairness should already be applying to consoles. The Halo glitching can be avoided by *surprise* using Halo 3 instead of Halo 2. I know there are enough XBOX360s on campus to where this shouldn’t be a problem.

Also all of the competitive section of smash bros uses glitches and if brawl has some they will be used there as well

Which is the sole reason I quit playing Melee at the LANs. I will not play against someone who bases his entire game strategy around what glitch he can use against what character. If the only people who consistently win at our LANs have to use glitches to do so then what’s the point of even having the tournament?

As to the “come to have fun” aspect, go play someone who bases his entire game around glitches and tell me if it’s fun.

Something we can look into for the next LAN is installing a plugin to the server that tracks scores with SteamIDs so anyone kicked out can rejoin with the same score. Once the map changes the mod clears out the saved scores.

I know this plugin exists but don’t know the name for the one I’ve seen. If this is something that catches the collective’s interest I can dig deeper.
