Just an FYI, I’m taking my laptop instead of the monster desktop for obvious reasons. It plays CSS on high with some AA and AF and TF2 on high with no filtering. Both at 1440×900. I’m also taking my monitor, MX518, and G11 so I should be good to go, just no liquid cooling. :(

Hey as long as it doesn’t crash, I don’t really care what computer you bring!

I would just bring my laptop but falcon is going to use it…

My computers only crash on CS1.6 and it’s more of a “this game sucks and you shouldn’t play it” warning than anything else.

Well, I finally registered. Hopefully, I’ll be playing in Team Fortress 2, CoD4, SSBM, and Mario Kart 64. Also, I said I wanted to be seated with The WCU Crew.

    #38078

Registered, hopefully I can play in more tournaments since I want to play in more than I registered for!

Asked to sit with the WCU crew as well!~

Just got back from the LAN

I played mariokart and got into the semi’s before I lost, then we played smash for like 5 hours straight. I ended up taking 8th place out of 32 and Trevor took 3rd. We got stuck in the group of death, though, with like 6 out of 8 people who were all very good.

I will upload some pictures/videos later tomorrow when I’m not still running off 2 hours of sleep for 40~ hours.

The trash-talk for the PC tournaments will commence momentarily.

    Stay tuned!

Let’s just put it this way: ASU had NOTHING for WCU in TF2. We smoked them all in shutout victories. In the end, WCU Team #1 came away with the $100 prize.

In other news, the ASU hackers and their NON-VAC secured servers were able to pick up the V in CS:S, relegating WCU Teams 1 & 2 to 3rd and 4th overall.

But at least we didn’t have to cheat to win TF2.

    [Negative Commentary]

When they get around to approving my registration on their forums I’m going to rip them a new one on the way they handled the PC games. They gave byes to teams that couldn’t get their act together in TF2 and let pretty obvious hacking go on in the CSS tournament. The CSS cheating was fostered by the disabling of VAC security on all their match servers (but not the pub  ) They started the CSS matches at $16,000 which is retarded for match-play. Their brackets seemed screwed up too, with the best team getting an automatic bye and the final match only determining the #1 spot (not the #2 spot).

The server admin team was also pretty unprofessional throughout the night, wanting to start matches before people were connected and stopping matches before they were done. The random restarts in TF2 got old too.

The lack of drinks was disappointing as well, pretty much all they had was sponsor donated Red Bull. They got about a million pizzas but didn’t have any plates.

Overall I definately prefer WCU LANs over ASU but I’ll take easy TF2 wins where ever I can get them. If we could get the same amount of university sponsorship that they have we’d blow them out of the water.

Pictures of app from the car. We were in a cloud, so it was windy, wet, and cold:

When we finally made it to the Student Union building where the LAN was held, people were still kinda setting up:

    p2230075gc4.th.jpg

Trevor and I left from the LAN building to go with some kids who were going back to their dorm room to play some smash before the tourney started. There was about 13~ of us:

    p2230076pv8.th.jpg

We eventually returned to play in the Mario Kart 64 Tournament. These are pictures taken during the time in between my games (which I must say, I dominated pretty hard, until I lost in a very close race)

They finally got smash set up in another room with 4 projectors. This is Trevor looking intimidating before the grueling 5 hour tournament started:

This was taken during the finals match. The leftmost two people are playing, while the other 20~ or so people were watching. They were all cheering for who they wanted to win whenever they made a good combo or killed the other person. It was fun:

The long ride back. Here is us taking a break at a rest stop:

Overall, I had fun. The smash competition was excellent and all the matches were very close. They stuck Trevor and I in the same pool with like 4 other really good players. We both advanced (Trevor won the pool, while I snuck through in the last spot), but were paired up against each other first round in the brackets due to the seeding. The final count was 2-1 and Trevor knocked me into the losers bracket. Here, I had an epic game vs a slick Falco player, which had everyone in the room hooping and hollering. I eventually took it, only to be knocked out from the tournament the next round in another close game by probably the best Dr. Mario player in the state (The final count was 2-1 again, with the last match ending in 1 stock). I secured a respectable 8th place finish out of a very tough group of 32 players. I hung around and cheered Trevor on. He took 3rd place after simply running out of energy from a full day of smashing. The finals were intense as the person who knocked Trevor out, Charlie (wearing white in the picture above and using a defensive Captain Falcon), came through the losers bracket and won 2 quick sets in a row against the defending champion Angel (wearing black and is the Marth player who also won our LAN).

The prize for the top two spots were 50$ and 25$ respectively. Third place received nothing, so Trevor just barely missed cashing. Afterwards, I was so mentally tired (2 hours of sleep the night before + 8 hours of straight gaming) that I kept running into chairs/walls/ect. haha.

Without a doubt our LANs are far better when it comes to layout, size, organization, and proximity to my dorm.

Overall, it was fun though. CSS was ok and TF2 is always fun to play. Loved the after game melee fights on the bridge. One hit crit for an insta-kill with Heavy fists: I’m looking at you, Nickname.

I also got to play a smattering of Smash Bros and a bit of Guilty Gear at the beginning. Can’t complain. Looking forward to our LAN much more though.

Congrats to Team #1 for your victory! Glad you guys could show them how to really play!

I’m debating on whether or not I should post any constructive criticism on their forums. Overall, it was even worse than the last one I went to. I don’t know what their deal was this time around.

If they ever get around to authorising my account I intend to. There are a few really basic things they got wrong. I’m all about letting them fail if they want to but instead of worrying about Kitten Cannon all day it might have been better to notice the absence of plates, soda, the uplink connection on half the switches; you know the basic stuff.

The first AppLAN that I went to was disorganized but it was more than bearable. This one was a little bit harder for me to get used to. I had no idea what our teams were supposed to be doing half the time.

Sounds like the PC section was a bit rough. The smash tournament, while long and without doubles, was well run.

go idle #appgaming about that. I was waiting too and looked at their member list, there were dozens of month-old + applications in, their e-mail approval thing is apparently ***ked. I idle’d #appgaming and got me, my roommate, and Oh Malley all approved. shortstack@#appgaming ftw.

Looks like you guys reaaly showed them how TF2 is supposed to be played. I wonder if they’ll attend our next LAN and try to win back their honor.

They could come but it would be in vain. We cannot be beaten.

    #38264

    Wasn’t worth the trip, imo.

Smash tournament looked like it was extremely well ran aside from lasting for 6 hours straight, I loved how large it was and how many projectors they had set-up for everyone to play. If we had that many people and that many projectors, it would be even more amazing.

All of the console tournaments looked like they were pretty well ran and overall very successful, with games like Soul Caliber 3 having the smallest turn-out and games like CoD4 being extremely popular. The amount of TV’s and screens they had were amazing though, it seemed their amount just completely dwarfs ours.

The PC tournaments were nothing short of terrible though, as most of them didn’t even start remotely on time, much less ran and moderated well. Giving byes to teams that didn’t deserve byes and pairing WCU’s teams either up against each other to knock one out early by one of our own or up against the tournament favorite is pretty biased and *edited*ty. Their CS: S tournament was run shoddily at best, with a turnout of maybe 5 teams, 3 of which consisting of people who looked like they played 24/7 and looked sketchy at best. The TF2 tournament was run just as bad, as the WCU teams were obviously paired off against each other to ensure that it would be an App vs. WCU final. The matches were run sub-par with console commands not even known and large breaks between games given to the App St. team, even though they should have just been run back-to-back.

Decent ideas came from going to their lan though, but I don’t think I’m going again.

i dont get it you all were saying there was ppl hacking at the lan… it is thatr hard to go over and watch them play??? someone please explane?????????

They had the losers continue playing for 2nd place so we were pretty much playing at the same time. The only teams that weren’t playing at the same time were the ASU byes, IE the sketchy ones.

On a side note, the tournament coordinator should make a few rounds around the room to make sure players are playing legitimately. I saw the coordinator one time and he was specing me because I was pulling the Renton shotgun bullcrap.

First I do want to answer Mitch’s statement about the 16,000 start: that’s the new CAL standard. Everyone starts at 16,000 to start with. I don’t like it but meh.

    Now to Dice:

Nothing was regulated. The CS servers weren’t VAC secured but the TF2 ones were. EASY hacks could’ve been slipped in, they don’t have to be extremely obvious for someone to use. A simple hack could be just that it aligns the crosshair onto the body or onto the head upon moving the mouse curser close to the body. Most of the teams had EVERYONE sitting next to each other and ghosting was quite prevalent amongst their teammates and peers, I noticed one guy looking across and at another monitor and then typing in their team-chat where the other team was going. Unless the environment is set and the surroundings are set to prevent ghosting then team-based gameplay is TERRIBLE for lans. If both teams were paired up against each other and no one could see the screens of the other teams, etc, then it would’ve been much better. Ghosting WAS involved HEAVILY amongst the top contending teams and I wouldn’t be surprised if more was involved as well, especially when I watched them do absolutely terrible during the warm-up and then when they switched to 1.6.
