ParticipantAs soon as you start linking credit card, address, and other store-related information to an online account, it ceases to be a “multiplayer account” and becomes a “store account”. There’s not a single online service where that doesn’t hold true. The store was the only service that was truely affected on the long term and in reality it’s been vulnerable since it was first brought online.
Regardless, they could have simply released a version number only update that made everyone reset their passwords. You know, similar to what they did after it came back up.
The rest of the security could have been fixed by firing their security team, the entirety of it, and contracting with someone for the short-term while they replaced their internal team. All the temporary team had to do was install actual software and hardware firewalls, you know, the kind that the rest of the business world uses. I haven’t heard of them actually firing or hiring anyone, I guess the Japanese weren’t too fond of Einstein: “You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it.”
If WCU can manage to secure their network using off-brand hardware and an all-talk, no-action CISSP I have no sympathy for any company that gets hacked.
MasterP
ParticipantYeah but the store is the only part that was ever really compromised. In reality it should have been the only thing that was taken down.

I really don’t like any of the headsets these days.
Agreed. It used to be easy to tell the good ones from the bad but now they’re all over the place and even the >$100 ones are hit or miss.
I’m actually leaning towards getting another eDimensional AudioFX. The two I had lasted longer than any of the other headsets I’ve had over the years. They’re a bit pricey but they sound great.

ParticipantDon’t get me wrong, I definately understand there’s a market for something like that but with the direction the internet is expanding (more raw speed at a cost of higher latency) I just can’t see anything like that having the success that it would have 6 years ago. I mean you just can’t stream 1080p content over the internet right now. Uncompressed 720p is 158MB/sec and 1080p is 356MB/sec. Sure with good compression you can knock that down considerably but even with the best compression you’d need at least a 24Mbit/sec connection to maintain a steady 1920×1080, 24bit color, 60fps video feed. That doesn’t include the audio stream, connection overhead, or others using your interpipes. It’s possible, but expensive. Over a period of 2-3 years the added ISP cost might have bought you that console

ParticipantWhy would you want to play the game through a set top box that has a long history of pixelated graphics and down-scaled resolution? What’s worse is that the multiplayer would only be with other OnLive players and if your internet or their system goes down you’re SOL. Plus you never own the game, not even a digital copy, the game files never touch your network or computer. That’s a little squirrely for my tastes.
Steam also has it for $45.
I have to re-iterate though, why would anyone want to pre-order a game that’s already been delayed this long? A few poor people still have their gamestop pre-order receipts from 9-10 years ago, something tells me they won’t be honoring them

ParticipantFEAR 2 did decent but not great. I think they want to give it one more shot before mothballing the series.
If they go the dark and horror route they’ll do just fine IMO.

Well it does help that google isn’t currently charging for it to call LAN lines…
This is the only reason I have an account with it. It’s much easier to use a PC headset during a conference call than a bluetooth headpiece.

ParticipantA few of the youtube trolls mentioned that his yellow ring of death was fixable. By fixable they probably mean send it to Sony and get it reformatted but hey let’s not split hairs here.

I actualy use google voice.. sometimes.
I hate having to leave gmail up for it to work. IMO if they can’t come up with a standalone program, like vonage and skype both have, then they don’t have a hope of competing against them.

ParticipantThat’s a rather expensive way to shoot $50 worth of ammo.
Some of those comments are epic. It doesn’t matter how redneck you are, if you can afford a gold-plated .50 desert eagle you can definately afford to go out back and target shoot at a broken PS3. The commentors are just jealous that he’s got $3500 worth of guns in the truck and doesn’t hesitate at shooting a $500 console.
It’s always funny trying to watch someone “bump fire” a rifle. It’s hard as hell because you’re only holding it with 1 hand.
MasterP
ParticipantI hope it works better than Google Voice.

ParticipantThat’s a nice side hobby. I would recommend ipod development but last I checked you had to have some sort of premium account to put even free apps on the app store.
MasterP
ParticipantYou’re giving them the benefit of the doubt. So far, Sony has done nothing to earn or deserve it. Keep in mind they’re up to 102 million customer account records lost and an untold number of monthly subscriptions that are being disrupted.
I can only assume I’ve since cycled my passwords because my SOE account is so old I can’t remember the set of passwords I used back them. I certainly can’t log in to find out…

Well, that is when they say it will be fully operational again.. which is not shocking at all considering they had to redesign almost the whole thing from the ground up.
I’m counting on them having multiplayer available at least a week before that.. I really believe that will happen.
Did you drink some of josrocket’s coolaid?
They lost all the SOE accounts as well. I think windows firewall could have done a better job than what they had.

ParticipantYou can get a brand new 6950 for $210 and they perform almost identical to the 5870. The only way you’re going to get anywhere remotely close to $200 for them is if you sell them to a moron. Also, how is a message board an accurate appraisal?

I endorse PC because we don’t have a magic network that can shut down and stop our fun.
Even when Steam has issues, you can start it in offline mode and still play most of the games online.
not when the steam network is down… yes it has happened before
The few times it went down you could always manually connect to servers using their ip and games that use another multiplayer service, like gamespy, still worked fine.

btw sony has been hacked two more times since the first … third wave as it is called occurred Friday and Sony is blaming that for not bringing it online either
And after the lies and mis-information thus far on this you’re still believing their excuses?

ParticipantUsed video cards don’t sell for crap on the interpipes, especially the expensive ones. Been there, done that with my 8800 GTX. I ended up just using it until it died.
How much do you want for one?
