Dude, I baited that hook. You’re required to bite.

ParticipantIf you do, make sure you get an Nvidia GPU. There are some really nice video codecs that offload all the processing to CUDA. I can watch a 1080p bluray rip and my dualcore atom will idle around 10%. On my desktop with an ATI card the same movie uses 30-40% of my Q6600.

ParticipantYeah releasing an inferior console last wasn’t a very smart move but their profits on it have been large, compared to the XBOX360 and PS3, both of which are in the red overall. I don’t think Nintendo really cared about delivering a powerhouse this round. Sounds fanboyish, I know, but taking the weaker yet cheaper and more profitable route suited them well during the economic downturn.
I’ve been playing the playstation line since it was first released back in the mid-90s but have never really found enough interest in their titles to warrant buying one and until just recently the multiplatforms were always released on the Nintendo line as well. Marketing it as a living room powerhouse is a smart move but without the ability to play movies that aren’t on blu-ray DVDs I have no need for it. Now, if they had left OtherOS alone and made the whole thing compatible with something other than FAT32, which has a filesize limit of 4GB, then yeah I’d already own one, but as it stands my Wii is compatible with more types of media than the PS3 and that’s just sad. I still prefer my $350 media center PC with a 2TB hard drive

ParticipantUhm… it’s college. You could always buy alcohol.

ParticipantAs evidenced by homebrew-only games on the Wii, to bring out the full potential in a console the developers have to actually know wtf they’re doing and care enough to sit there and do it. When you’re trying to port a game from one system to another, the care just isn’t there, so whatever console it was originally developed for is going to have the better looking graphics.
MS went WAY out of their way to make sure the XBOX360 was easy to program games for, as did Nintendo, Sony thought that since their hardware was better developers would automatically want to re-learn everything just to program for the PS3. Well, surprise surprise, that didn’t happen, not quickly anyway.

They get their money out of people that continue to buy the system
Correction, they’re still losing money on each console sale and Sony’s videogame division (aka Networking or wtfever they use to hide it on the books) had a net loss of almost $1 billion in FY 2011. That’s console, games, accessories, everything. They’re actually bleeding more money than MS is at this point, even with RROD losses figured in.
I agree 100% that security is one of those things that’s just expected, regardless of whether or not the service is paid-for or free. Perfect example is Steam. The service itself is free and there’s very few games that you are required to buy through it but the security is there regardless of where you choose to buy games through them or not. This is almost like the Apple OS4 screw up, they thought no one would ever find out so when someone did they were caught with their pants down, well Sony never thought anyone could hack into their internal servers so when someone did they had absolutely no safeguards on the data.
MasterP
ParticipantNot to be a negative nancy here but IIRC we’ve tried to get approvals to do this before and they never went anywhere. If you want to do this I would focus on the freshman dorms, those RDs will be the most likely to give you permission.
MasterP
ParticipantHe’s probably on the Sony forums fanboying it up. The fanboys are out in full force over there, trolling every complaint and question.

ParticipantIf you haven’t already it would be wise to request a new credit card number. But I mean if you like to live dangerously then no you shouldn’t be worried at all.
MasterP
ParticipantHey now, Sony’s the only one that stores your passwords and CC numbers on their servers unencrypted. No need to hate on the rest of them

Are those specs really 6 years of progress compared with the xbox or 5 years of progress compared with the ps3?
They don’t have to be, neither MS or Sony are anywhere near releasing a nextgen console. Nintendo is simply releasing a console using the best current-gen technology, if MS or Sony were to release another right now it would be in the same ballpark.
Also worth noting is that IBM has made very few improvements to the original cell processor and discontinued work on it a few years ago so anything Sony does will likely use a different architecture, making it incompatible with PS3 games. They could pay IBM to continue working on it but that would get expensive really fast. This also affects MS as the XBOX360 is running a processor based partly on the cell architecture. MS could easily use the same processor family that Nintendo is using though as the instruction sets are virtually identical that what they’ve been using.
As to sales, Nintendo’s sales have dropped pretty bad over the last year or so thanks to the economy and Kinect/Move. Most of the newer multi-platform games are not being released on the Wii due to the processing power and the loss of sales is driving down profits. With more processing and video power than the competitors they would not only be able to get those games on their system but would also give developers the ability to put more in the games. As good as a shooter looks on the XBOX360, imagine how good it could look on something with 15-20% more power.

ParticipantWas just asking a question, you don’t have to bite my head off over it. Given the histories around here, it was a fair question to ask.
MasterP
ParticipantNintendo doesn’t care. They recognize that when a user can hack their console that it’s their fault for botching the security, not the user’s for being smart enough to find the flaw. They also follow Shane’s philosophy:

If Sony had left it alone most people would have left them alone. The guy Sony sued for “hacking” released ALL his research and code via bittorrent so that anyone who wanted to carry on his work could do so. Because of this, the information Sony sought to destroy is now spread all over the web and impossible to delete.
Compare that to Nintendo, where they left the firmware hackers alone and most of the hackers kept their code in-house and off the internet. Hell, the guys who originally cracked everything have specifically kept their work out of the public domain to prevent piracy of games. When you treat your customers with a little respect, and not like criminals, it goes a hell of a long way in earning their respect.
MasterP
ParticipantI thought once you guys re-joined the private groups were going to stop?
MasterP
ParticipantYeah while it’s backwards compatible with the Wii, most homebrewers will be keeping theirs plugged up. You can bet Nintendo will be fixing all the bugs this time around <_>
MasterP
ParticipantThat’s what I had heard but why on earth would Sony give developer consoles such widespread access? Download anything for free? No one has ever done that, for obvious reasons. It’s a security breach waiting to happen. Yeah it’s nice to ASSUME that no one’s ever going to get one but that’s like assuming no one’s ever going to crack your proprietary security algorithms, they always do.
Typically developer consoles have a unique serial number that is outside the normal range of serial numbers so that their online activity can be easily tracked and monitored and they’re never given preferential treatment in online stores. If they can’t even make a proper developer console they need to go back to square one and start over.

ParticipantActually the controller will have a touchscreen

No word on what the disc format will be. Most likely DVD but maybe bluray depending on how much Sony charges to use it. Online accessed content is likely to be a big player, regardless of media format.
MasterP
ParticipantMy understanding is that they plan to release more content through DLC. For PC, this will most likely be free.
I’ve also heard rumors that they might release the tools to create maps. If that happens GG.
MasterP
ParticipantYou and I both know that security changes don’t require that the entire system be shut down to code. You make the changes on a test server and when you’re done you push it to the production servers.
Me thinks Sony needs a lesson in how to run a datacenter.

Sure would be better if PSN didn’t go down immediately after it came out and stay down for 4 days and counting…
So first they didn’t know why things were down, then blamed the outage on hackers, then took it down to “investigate” the “intrusion”, now they’re “re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure”.
So in essence, they broke something. Since Steamworks was the latest addition I imagine the system couldn’t handle the total epicness of PC players using their network so they’re having to rebuild it. Faster, stronger, more MBs. I want the one with more emm-bees.

ParticipantYeah but you still couldn’t be using both at the same time. When you log into Steam it kicks you out of the Steamworks account on PSN just as if you had logged into Steam on another PC.
I’m not even sure how well selling the PS3 copy will work, doesn’t it come with a single-use Steam key?
