ParticipantIn a nutshell here are the cvars and an overall idea of what they do: (client)
cl_cmdrate: number of times per second that you send updates TO the server
rate: max bytes per second FROM the server (usually you get about 3.xx kbps)
cl_rate: bytes per second that you want to try to send TO the server (set it up based on your upload speed, higher for campus internet and lower if you’re like me an on a cable modem…I myself typicall send at 1.xx kbps)
cl_updaterate: number of times per second that you attempt to receive updates FROM the server (more on this cvar later)
ex_interp: number of times per second that your client guess ALL POSSIBLE locations based on a history buffer.
Ok now for the big controversy. Because update rate is how many times per second you get updates from the server and interp is based on a history buffer INTERP IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO YOUR CL_UPDATERATE SETTING. By default, CS does not take your updaterate into consideration (the dumbest part of an otherwise really intelligent piece of netcode) and sets your ex_interp setting to .1 (you have a built in lag of 100 ms that is accounted for by the server). Setting your interp too low such as .01 as indicated in this thread is BAD. Why? Because you are actually interping MORE THAN DEFAULT!!!! Why is that? Well, we are only updating on WCUs default max value of 33 times per second which has a lowest possible interp rate of .030. Because you are forcing your client to guess less but are not receiving enough updates to fill in the gaps, you are not seeing what is actually going on in the server. That’s all theoretical however. CS won’t let you try to interp less than it can send you data so it automatically bumps you up to .030 (assuming you are using the cl_updaterate of 33). Here’s where things CAN get messy though. If you set your updaterate to 101 or 100 (which most people here do thinking that it helps them) you are actually hurting yourself quite a bit. Why? Well you are attempting to receive more packets than the server is actually sending you. Your client then drops the 66 update packets per second that it is not receiving and attempts to draw objects based on the history buffer (which is bad, any time you draw something based on where it was and not where it is means that reg is going to suck). So, you want to set your value to the max setting that the server can actually send. You don’t have rcon so you have to go by what I tell you (because I do have access to what the max rate settings are). How do you do it on another server where they don’t tell you the rates? Maybe they update at 66 (like we should)? Here’s the guide for you:

Ok I thought I was beginning to understand, but now I’m confused again. If you’re saying what lockem’s rates and interp should be, given that you know nothing about his system, location, etc., then how is that any different from forcing everyones’ client to uniform values??I didn’t know the max rates had been set so low. If you can’t talk to wcu at an updaterate of 33 then you really need to find a new ISP/server to play on.

ParticipantKip will defend his girlfriends honor. This thread goes no where.
Kuros
ParticipantI lied, rates are at 33. That means interp should be .030

Let’s assume you’re right. Tell me why when people use ex_interp .01 you clearly see them shooting behind other people, and people still die. I can have 100 hp and jump behind a wall, be a good 6 e-feet behind it and still die from an awp without being shot in the head through the wall.Interp is client side. You would not be able to see anything about anyone else’s interp. All it does it guess where someone in based on history packets that have already been received. The server does all the work once a shot is entered packaged up and sent to the server. The wall shooting is a problem with the servers lag compensation and rates that I’m about to see if I can help fix. The interp side of that was fixed a long time ago. It used to be you could turn your interp way up and see where people were going to be 10 seconds before they got there. Set interp too low and it gets choppy because you aren’t getting enough updates to fill in gaps. It’s very complicated how it works. What isn’t complicated is understanding that all those calculations have to be done server side or hacks could very easily take advantage of the system if it were the other way around.

I think I’ve complained about registry maybe once or twice since I’ve been playing here, so nice try there bud. My rates are as follows:rate 20000
cmdrate 101
cl_updaterade 101
ex_interp .01
I reg fine. I don’t get any stupid lag. Nothing. I play in the server just fine with interp .01 and I DOMINATE LOL. Interp 0.1 lags hit boxes and you kill people when you shouldn’t.
You CANNOT use interp or rates to exploit hit boxes. Hits are calculated SERVER SIDE. If they were done client side I could write a hack and sit in spawn and one shot the entire opposing team because I told the server I hit them all. THINK ABOUT IT, IT’S NOT THAT COMPLICATED.
In other news the server is apparently operating at an updaterate of 40. That means interp should be roughly .025somethingsomethingsomething. Just set updaterate to 40 and ex_interp to 0 and let the game do the math by itself.

Lags peoples hit boxes so you can shoot behind where they are running and still kill them. Thats what it does in CS. I’m sure someone will post with another explanation saying I’m wrong. But thats what it does in 1.6 LOL>OL~!>No it doesn’t. But since you know all, I’ll let you keep thinking that and *edited*ing about the registry in WCU when you’re the one using the wrong rates. While you’ll be sitting around with ex_interp .01 I’ll be playing with ex_interp 0. This sets my interp to work correctly with my updaterate which will match the servers rate.
Kuros
ParticipantAgain:
the server-side lag compensation knows about client entity interpolation and corrects this error.
It doesn’t matter what your interp is set at because the servers unlag setting takes your interp setting into consideration when it calculates misses and hits. Changing it would be pointless. A higher value would be better for people with crappy connections. We can’t douche those people over by forcing something that doesn’t really change anything anyways. Protip: 99% of what you see as making a difference when changing server ticrate/rates/interp is due to the placebo effect.
Kuros
ParticipantI’m wondering if the server has sv_unlag turned off. There are some really *edited* “around the corner” shots in 1.6.

Hey,The other thread got too cluttered so I wanted to make a new one to see if people are on board for this. I’ve known about interp for a long time, but I didn’t realize how big of a difference it made until recently playing on the server. It basically interpolates between where you shot and where the person you shot at was, and .1, the setting most ppl use, basically hits people when you missed and .01 is more true and fair.
Anyways, for uniform fairness, I think it’d be nice if the server forced all players to use ex_interp .01. I’ve seen many servers force clients’ values to one thing or another, so this shouldn’t be hard.
Your thoughts?
Bad idea. Forcing rates to extremes is bad. From Valve:
Entity interpolation causes a constant view “lag” of 100 milliseconds, even if you’re playing on a listenserver (server and client on the same machine). So if you turn on sv_showhitboxes the player hitboxes are drawn in server time, meaning they are ahead of the rendered player model by 100 milliseconds. This doesn’t mean you have to lead your aiming when shooting at other players since the server-side lag compensation knows about client entity interpolation and corrects this error. If you turn off interpolation on a listen server (cl_interpolate 0 and cl_lagcompensation 0), the drawn hitboxes will match the rendered player model again, but the animations and moving objects will become very jittery.
So tl;dr the server/client connection fixes interp problems by itself.

2. Unless they REALLY fixed something in SP4, Windows 2K was NEVER good for gaming. 3dMark used to give me double the score on 98 than 2000 with the same hardware. I guess that could be nVidia’s drivers too, but double? I dunno… I guess if you run less operating system, you get more hardware out of it. Along that train of thought, DOS must be the best for gaming. lolThose are some loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong running jokes. Win2k was probably the best client OS for a workplace back in the day though. I’ll stand by that.

What’s wrong with yours? I hate mine WTB new one, but Kstone restrictions are in place blocking all attempts to spend money on PC components.

Well here is the thing Kuros I actaully have a job and worked hard for what iv got. It was never just given to me. Not my fault your not innovative or creative. There are tons of things you can do and make good money doing it but again you choose to sit here and pretend like your the *edited* when well i doubt you even have a degree or a business. As for your claim that graphics cards are not the same they actaully are. The important parts all come from the same place. I have a brother who works in the semiconductor industry and has first hand knowledge of this seeing as how he dealt with TSMC for his job. Im not an an electronic engineer and I never will be. Im good at business and making tons of money thats my calling in life. Yeah im gonna mess up when I build computers but thats cuz I have a life as I said in my intro I spend most of my money either on cars or reinvesting it into my business.Actually according to the CSS logs you spend most of your day playing Counter-Strike. Protip: Very few believe you are what you say you are. This thread was about the best machines. The other thread was about the best overclocker. While you may have the most expensive parts, you have no idea how to use them. This means you lose both threads. Go back to “making tons of money” and let the big boys build the power machines.
