ParticipantI think it’ll all done through electronic sensing. So they can tell if the hit would be a kill hit or whatever. Dunno if that’s right or not, but I think I’ve heard that somewhere before.

ParticipantCan I have for my mage, yes?

ParticipantUnfortunately, I played my PS1 right on through the AOE era. So, when I went back to play it I was too annoyed by how slow it was to actually trudge on and enjoy it. Though, I played Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds back in the day and that was built off the AOE engine.
Cacophony
ParticipantIt’ll be okay, Major.
Better RTS games exist now to drown your sorrows.

(Has never actually played AOEII for more than 20 minutes)

ParticipantAt the beginning of the year is busy, busy. What with books and classes just starting and all that jazz. But, if we can find a spot for it within the first few weeks that’d be pretty cool (But at least after the first week as passed).
Anyone is Central think they can nab the multipurpose room again? If not, we can try to manage something elsewhere. Just let me know and I’ll start poking around.

ParticipantAye, that much space taken up in the name of signatures is annoying.
Choose 1! But choose wisely….

ParticipantHonestly, I dont mind it if Current Events/Political threads get a little firer. Adds a nice little spark to the forums and isnt nasty as long as people keep their heads.
As for civilian casualties in the Russian campaign, for lack of a better term, in Ossetia, anyone have links to news articles about the civilian casualties? Because I’ve yet to hear about them anywhere but here and I’m curious what kind of numbers we are looking at.
Also, watched a spot of rowing the other day where the US came in first after and a bit of the synchronized diving. It was pretty wild seeing just how in sync some of those pairs are and just how critical being just a slight second out of sync can be to the scoring. Anyone know if China took that one in the end or not, because it looked like they would.

And about the economics, the sad truth is that every country (besides the US) hosting the olympics in the past 50 years has had a huge increase in economic power leading up to the olympic games and then a steady decline thereafterI knew there was an increase, but I didnt know about the decline. Though with the almost non stop economic expansion China has been experiencing will it make that much of an effect?

I am fully aware that the Olympics have always had political implications, but I think when discussing the actual events, it is unfair to the athletes to drag up politics.Fair enough.

ParticipantMy friend and I both thought it was some hydraulics or something similar so when the people jumped out from underneath the boxes I was pretty surprised.

Uh, no. Activists have been decrying the Chinese government’s behavior for many years. The Tiananmen Square massacre comes to mind. True, there has been a signifigant increase in the awareness of the government’s human rights violations sinse they got the Olympics, because people don’t like the Chinese government receiving the honor of hosting the games. This is a good thing. The more international pressure put on them, the better. I wouldn’t call the political element of the ’08 Olympics annoying so much as telling.Oh, I know. Tienanmen Square. Tibet. People have been *edited*ed over the way China has been running things for a long time now. But, I’ve got money that most of the recent human rights protests that have appeared will fade away when the Olympics are gone. All the Media will switch to the latest craze and stop showing specials on “the dark, poverty stricken streets of Beijing” and a great deal of America that isnt already tied to some organization or that has no overwhelming political motivations will forget about it. That’s what I find annoying.
And if you don’t think the Olympics usually has some political side to it consider any Olympics that was held during the Cold War. How many nations have granted temporary cease fires in light of the upcoming events at certain times during the history of the Olympics only to have the war go from battlefield to Olympics. And you yourself brought up the 1936 Olympics in Berlin which had heavy political motivations for the Germans. It may have fallen off a bit in more recent times, but the way things are going with the Chinese isnt all the different.
As for the events themselves. I watched a fair bit of volleyball yesterday and I found it fairly interesting. Especially to see the differences in play style from both the USA and Japan.

ParticipantWhoah! Where’d that come from!?

i dont think you the country will benefit economically since they spend 43 billion dollars (usd)Of course the cost spent was outrageous, but also consider the absurd amount of traffic they are going to be getting through there thanks to the event. Tourism is probably on the rise (even though I’m sure Beijing doesnt have too much trouble with tourism on a yearly basis) and all of the people staying there are likely to be patronizing some sort of establishment during there stay. So, it is likely it will have an economic impact on the area, even is only on a local level. Plus, the Beijing soccer team gets a new stadium when its all over. So, that’s got to bring in something.
And while the political aspect of the Olympics this year can be annoying it is certainly an important aspect. It’s been one of the biggest parts of this particular Olympics since they announced China as the host nation. What irks me is that sudden interest in the human rights violations that only seem to be going on because of the Olympics and will probably die out after the event is over. While it might not always be obvious, the Olympics always has a political side.
What I thought was funny in particular was the Chinese government refusing the President of Zimbabwe (I believe it was) on the grounds that he is illegally holding office, has been responsible for various human rights violations, etc etc…

Yep, all those flashing lights totally make up for the political prisoners and reeducation camps.Though unavoidable, the political crap that got mixed in with this particular Olympics is annoying. China has been doing the same thing for how long now and only now is there a unified international outcry about “increasing human rights violations.”
Sinister government or not, China WILL benefit from the Olympics at least economically and I imagine the people of Beijing at least will see some end to that reward. Especially since China is far more capitalist then they’d like to admit.

ParticipantIE7 is ugly and not nearly as easy to use as Firefox. I’ll make small sacrifices like not being able to use gametrailers.com instead of converting.

ParticipantIs it anywhere else? I kind of takes 1000 years to buffer and even then it complains. Something YouTubey maybe? Or even just not WMP11?
Edit:
Nevermind, I got it up in Standard and it was much nicer to me. It looks pretty neat honestly and those epic battles towards the end there as they charge Light’s Hope looks pretty awesome. I’m still having a conniption fit over how unfluffy it feels to have a bunch of Death Knights running around Azeroth willy nilly, but at least they’re making it look fun.
And if they add a lot more epic battles like the last one that’d be sweet.

ParticipantI didnt really have time to comment before but I’m a fan of the theory of multiple worlds existing parallel to one another, each containing a different outcome from what exists on your current world.
Whether or not it is possible the idea that everything I choose not to do may be playing out in parallel earths is kind of exciting.
Plus, there’s the whole idea that there may have once been a time when there was a sort of nothing and that one day the world will condense back down into a single object surrounded a vast nothing. Even if it’s not possible thinking about seeing such a vast space of nothing blows my mind. Mainly because its really not perceivable in any way and my mind runs crazy trying to comprehend it.
Brilliant article, Major!
I love getting my brain going on all this crazy stuff.Quote:

ParticipantI’ve heard of most of those before and some of them tend to be fairly interesting things to read about.
To sum up the last one though, the Guide has this to say about space:
“Space is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind bogglingly big it is. And so on.”
Sums it up nicely I think.

ParticipantI’ve yet to have any major problems with Vista that I can think of. About the only thing that gets on my nerves is that my AIM sometimes doesnt like to start in Vista and I have to try a bunch of times. But, that could be easily solved if I’d just upgrade to that infernal new version of AIM (not going to happen).

who knows *edited* about pcs when their 8?
I was born a fully functional human adult. Actually, MasterP probably wasnt 8 when that stuff came out. Or I just think he’s older than he actually is. In which case, I apologize in advance.

As for the beloved console argument.
PS2>All.
It’s really just as simple as that folks. All this next gen mumbo gumbo is overrated.

So, the selection process for Ocelot’s inner-circle of private soldiers is based entirely upon a flare for literary puns? Dammit, Kojima! That’s just stupid!Considering the naming of every major villain in these game seems to have some theme to it (Decoy Octupus was the disguise expert, Psycho Mantis the psychic, Fortune was ‘lucky’, Vamp was bisexu…I mean a ‘vampire’, Fury was *edited*ed, The End was old, etc etc) does it really surprise you?

Cacophony
ParticipantAs of the point of the game I’m at so far, there is no explanation for the female centered Ocelot PMC. Though, personally I’ve wondered if it wasnt because the female body is better adapted to the nanomachines or perhaps he just wanted his soldiers to be more agile and quick, since they are very much like the Tengu’s from MGS2 with their bouncing about and clinging to walls.
As for the Beauty and the Beast all being females, again I figured that just stuck with the Beauty part of the titles. So, they avoided males. And yes, the backstories for the members are generally *edited*ed up. And it actually just gets more *edited*ed up the farther you move up the hierarchy of the squad. Makes the past FOXHOUND, Dead Cell, and Cobras look like pansies compared to them.)
That’s just my opinion though. I was actually hoping it might be explained at some point myself since it does mention briefly that his soldiers are taken from the best of the best of the PMC’s. But, all PMC’s seem to be male up until Ocelot’s. So, simply an unwillingness to make diverse character models for the PMC’s, or what?
All this talk is making me really want to go beat it now!

ParticipantMost of the long dead Presidential name mumbo jumbo I always figured was mostly BS, meant to throw people off of their tail. Which turns out to be mostly true, though it turns out to be other stuff in the end too. Anyhow, it’s all explained in 4. Olga Gurlukovich (say it in a Solid Snake voice, much more fun).
I can see that though. I’ve know quite a few people who don’t like the games solely based off the fact that the story is so convoluted at times (ok, most of the time).
Cacophony
ParticipantIf you’ve played the older games than you’ll have an idea of how cutscene heavy the series is. But, MGS4 so far feels like it is way heavier on the cutscenes this time with not nearly enough gameplay. I think that, for me at least, there is almost no replay value. And this is coming from someone who played MGS2 probably around 30+ times and MGS3 about 10+ times.
