ParticipantBe sure to invite the RD, that way the RA won’t bust you

ParticipantYea that would be nice, open up a box, disable a ram bay, install it, and enable it again… that would be the shizzle.
Just a dream for now though, becasue I’m sure no one wants me to try to electricute myself trying to install ram on the server. (ok, im sure someone probably wants me to electrocute myself, but they probably don’t want me to take the server down with me)
They Make hot-swappable Hard Drives, why can’t they make hot-swappable ram?
jelleyman
ParticipantTell you what… I’ll only turn it off in the near future to put more RAM into it. Is another 4 gigs enough? (it better be becasue it will max the server out at 16gigs)
jelleyman
ParticipantYou guys misunderstand… I wouldn’t shut down the server from the web… I’d walk back to it and hit the power button. ~
but I’m not that evil yet.
jelleyman
ParticipantWe’ll probably have to run it through the VCR but I should work and I see no problems in doing so as long as we hook up everything back when we’re done.
jelleyman
ParticipantFact #1! I have the ability to turn the server off, permanently.

Participantit could be due to the fac the vax system is older than I am….
jelleyman
Participantyou can always charge dues… but that makes people go away…

jelleyman
ParticipantThe vax system died again on friday… they are having drive array issues, hopefully those issues will be taken care of soon though.
jelleyman
ParticipantYou guys should really open a bank account for the organization. That way the club dosen’t have to rely on Adam’s account (besides he’ll be graduating soon as well). Just a thought.

Participantyea, now that I’ve had time to think about it… you are probalby right so as long as the donation site isn’t hosted on a WCU server (and paypal isn’t) you guys should be ok.
jelleyman
Participantnot exactly, but since if the shoe fits…
jelleyman
ParticipantFREAKS!
jelleyman
ParticipantI’d be careful who you call a stupid mac user around here….
Especially since i control your internet connection.
jelleyman
ParticipantI see it worked.
jelleyman
ParticipantVery nice guys, very nice.
jelleyman
ParticipantWell.. I suppose that you can, but you’ll need to check the legality of it and being an On-campus organization.
as for the money for the ram that is paid for out of the ResNet budget… don’t forget that the server is pulling double duty and has some virtual servers set up on it to manage the Campus AntiVirus stuff as well.
So consider the hardware upgrade a gift from us in ResNet.
As for donations, you could always collect them and then use them to buy stuff for the LAN’s.. food, drinks, and prizes. just a thought.
jelleyman
ParticipantYou probably won’t notice much of a difference… although we might be able to host another game or 2 if people want them
jelleyman
ParticipantHow is this different from the Calendar Girls? Old men instead of old women?
Humm, now that I’ve put it that way i’m disturbed.
jelleyman
ParticipantI think thats a great idea, however I do believe that some of the RTS games do not have a dedicated server mode or there are legal issues of running a server (World of Warcraft: Pay to Play comes to mind).
jelleyman
ParticipantNow you guys can’t say I’ve never done anything for the club… especially now that I’m E-mazing. lol
jelleyman
ParticipantLooks like he needs to fix his email account… to mrussell@email.wcu.edu
the @wcu.edu addresses are set up on the vax (mike’s got a forward to email.wcu.edu — automatic) and the vax has been having issues lately
should be fixed later today though.jelleyman
ParticipantMediacom… its the suckage!
jelleyman
ParticipantJust remember, its not just winning, its staying on top that counts!!!

ParticipantHere are the quick stats:
HP DL385 (2u Rack mount)
Dual AMD Opteron 250 2.4 Ghz
12 Gigs PC 3200 DDR2 (hopfully soon to be 16)
6×130 gig Raid array (effectivly 1x 683Gig HD)
Total cost was just shy of $10,000.

ParticipantActually, it looks like he was using the Crossover for Mac software beta to run it. I played around with that the other day. It lets you run Windows programs on a Mac. It is still in beta so some things do not work. I.E. UT2k4 and Guildwars (they both need directX support and there seems to be an issue with that. On the other side it looks like CS works ok.
jelleyman
ParticipantActually the server can’t hold more than 16 gigs so technically anything over that would be too much. But thats just semantics.
jelleyman
ParticipantLate to the party again…

jelleyman
Participantoops… I guess I should take it down.
Ok that’s done…
jelleyman
ParticipantI’m working on it…. another 4gig’s is around $1000
which would take us to 16gigs
