So after the LAN troubleshooting session with our network engineer who is still seeing issues on XBL on campus?

They aren’t in trouble, I just want to look at their computer to figure out why every anonymous log in to TRON originates from their computer. Especially since it was shutting down shortly after they logged in last week. But hopefully I have fixed that issue.

Our networking folks have been making some changes the past few days to try to improve things, obiously this is a work in progress and they are not quite finished yet. Hopefully things will improve soon.

    sorry for the inconvience.

Yup, the internet has been bad for everyone lately.

And it probably will continue to suck for the next little while too.

Once the University’s bandwidth gets upgraded, then things will hopefully change.

Between p2p, youtube, and all the other video on demand sites out there (such as ABC.com) its killing all the gaming bandwidth. p2p is limited, but http is not, and won’t be anytime soon.

oh and the email thing… a change is comming to that also, probably see a change in the fall.

The WCU DNS administrator wishes me to inform you that he Resents your remarks about his server being the root cause of the internets issues as of late.

What is really going is our tubes are full… someone from the lottery comission is comming next week and hopes to flush out the tubes with the special education lottery balls, since no race horses are available. (if you don’t get this you need to watch more TV, or do a youtube search for Ted Stephens Daily Show)

Seriously though there have been some issues with our external firewall, bandwidth limitations (150mbps can not flow through a 100mbps pipe easily) , and most recently a flakey media converter.

All these issues are being addressed currently (we’re launching a huge advertising campaign to get more race horses on campus :P ) and hopefully things well get a lot better soon.

As always if you have questions or concerns about this please email me with them.

    Thanks,

Well lets see if I can sort some stuff out for you…

    The website http://www.wcu.edu

A lot of the upper levels (read Vice Chancellors) wanted to gear the site towards attracting new students to the site (which they have done I think). The new design is somewhat of a Work in Progress, but I think its mostly content that is going to change at this point other than layout.

The web team–Jed Tate, Amy Walker and Newt Smith (director) is not being retired, they have however implimented Red Dot as their content management system to assist the different departments with getting the new content up to the new site. And the team itself is going to be very busy in the next year or so changing all the departmental pages to the new format.

I think some of the layout will change but that will be driven by the content/need for things (so complain to the departments that you want the changes made to their site)

and for the teal background…. all of ITS was like WTF Mate?!?!?!?!? and all of Web Services was like ‘we did studies and it works….cough cough*bs*cough ‘

Everyone is trying to learn the new ways to navigate the site so hopefully it will get better/you will like it more in the near future.

don’t talk to me about karma, or Karma in the form of the RIAA or MPAA will come knocking on your door.

and what you do outside of my network, i really don’t care about.

Actually, since I work here full time, I don’t get breaks like students do. the server is running on 100mbp pipe, and the uploads (on a good day should be approching that, although when the kids are back encrypted p2p traffic kills the pipe to the server)

And now that I’ve said that, if you are running Ares or Encrypted Bit torrent on the WCU network, you could be responsible for killing the server. Only you can prevent forest fires. Be a hoot, don’t pollute.

Im thinking that it has to be. We are on the resnet and the admin side of the network.

No no no… there are no network bridges like that. the Box just sits on the ResNet network, it has it’s own VLan trunk that gets it to the ResNet interface and it stays way out of the Admin network.

    Sorry for the confusion

Ok, couple of people to address:

Kore: NCREN always lets us know when they are making a change, no changes have been made recently to any thing.

Ex: The server is connect Via Cat6 (gigabit) to the ResNet Cisco 6509 router. The box has a seperate interface and the rest of the network comes in on 4 seperate interfaces. Traffic is then routed through our external Firewall and then out to the Cisco 6509 (NCREN) edge router (internet).

I just got up with the folks in networking about the lag issues. Everything looks as it should on the networking side, and the game server has a sepearte class on the Packetshaper so games will get passed through to it with out a problem.

sorry guys. but it looks like the network isn’t the problem.
