Oh Malley
ParticipantHas anybody else been having issues with gaming over the internet? A couple of buddies of mine as well as myself have been horrible issues with ping in our gaming, both PC and console. Pings up to 10000+ in Guild Wars and I’ve been in constant red ping for the past 4 or 5 days. I was hoping it’d clear up, but I guess not. Anyways, my 360’s diagnostic test seems to be saying that there’s an issue with the MTU. Just wondering if IT has been messing with the packet shaper again or what. I would like some light shed on this, as well as bring it to notice and make sure I’m not the only one.
P.S. At least before today I could connect to Xbox Live. Now I can’t at all, thus giving me the MTU test failure.

ParticipantThe other night when Kuros was over I could sign in, but couldn’t get a match.

ParticipantI don’t have my 360 with me right now, but I’ve noticed generally slower web browsing. Anyone else?

Participantyea i have the same issues but it is only with one game and that is BF2. The lowest ping i have had while here this year is 198. I get kick everytime I try to get into a game. I sucks i like it more then CS. Just wondering is there any thing i can do about here in the room or if is IT closing the port or what?

ParticipantOur networking folks have been making some changes the past few days to try to improve things, obiously this is a work in progress and they are not quite finished yet. Hopefully things will improve soon.
sorry for the inconvience.

ParticipantYeah. I just randomly checked last night and I had green pings for like 95% of the hosted games. The rest could just be a bad host (on their end) or what not.

Participant….It appears I spoke too soon.

ParticipantSo…XBL has been virtually unplayable for the last few days… what is the deal. I am so fed up with the internet being slow and blinking out from time to time. I don’t know anybody on other campuses with problems this bad.

ParticipantOur pipe is full. Nothing we can do this semester. We are upgrading by 450 Mbps (to roughly 600 Mpbs total) this fall. Things will be better when we come back from summer vacation.

Participantmoar intertubes? you promise?
April 18, 2007 at 2:19 am #20060Akuzan
Participantyes i hope it gets better bec this semester is much worse then last semester and if the internet gets fixed i will consider coming back here next year. I would leave bec the tv never works, there is nothing to do in cullowhee and the internet is always horrible. So if the internet gets fixed i wouldnt mind coming back here
April 19, 2007 at 1:39 am #20106gxti
ParticipantThe size of their tubes isn’t the problem, it’s the packet shaper. I don’t have access to any raw data, but I’d be willing to bet a significant portion of what we have is eaten by encrypted bittorrent. One of these days I’ll write a proof-of-concept for a message stream encryption blocker

Participanti have never heard of that but i just hope the internet is fixed bec this is rediculous…..the internet has gone from bad to “i think im just going to go to sleep bec i know the internet will be as slow as dial up.” So if it is not fixed by next year im gonna be even more *edited*ed and im not sure i can be

Like gxti said, at this point it’s more of a packet filtering problem than it is a tube size problem. I was getting 800-4000ms pings in one of my games and when AJ cleared the ports I got
Thanks again Adrian.

ParticipantThis has been the case pretty much all year, just most people don’t take the time to tell adrian to open a port for them. oh well…
April 19, 2007 at 3:01 pm #20129Akuzan
Participantwell halo was supposedly fixed like 3 times….. so we have told him but the problem just keeps getting worse and app the packet problem only barely works for maybe a week or so. and why did my word that rhymes with hissed get “censored”?
April 19, 2007 at 4:00 pm #20132Akuzan
Participantso someone keeps messing with the packet shaper or the problem was never fixed, it was just a coincidence. Oh well school is almost over so w/e but when you cant talk to one person in a pre-game lobby without lagging horribly something is seriously wrong…..
April 19, 2007 at 4:18 pm #20133Kuros
ParticipantBe patient. If it still acts retarded with the new OC12, then we can start asking wtf is up.
April 19, 2007 at 4:44 pm #20134gxti
ParticipantI’ll see if I can figure out of Halo uses fixed port numbers, and send those off to AJ.
April 19, 2007 at 6:46 pm #20141Akuzan
Participantthat would be great bec that is mainly all i play but if the internet doesnt work when halo 2 comes out i will scream
April 19, 2007 at 8:43 pm #20148cameron crazie
Participanti can’t wait for halo 2 to come out either, i’ve had it pre-ordered for months!

April 19, 2007 at 11:27 pm #20162JazzmanSA80
ParticipantI’m sure they mean Halo 3. The thing that is so annoying with the XBL lag that I notice on Gears of War is that it will get really good for a short time, then fall off really hard, and then sort of roller coaster better and worse very rapidly. Lately, however, its just been bad period. /whining.
How does one find out what port an XBox game uses? The two games I know I want to see are Halo 2 and Gears of War. I know there are only a couple weeks left, but I for one have a surprisingly small amount of work to do, and that leaves me with a pathetic amount of free time. Without an outlet, I may become certifiable.
If there is something that can be done, please share. I’d have to second Akusan’s notion- the combination of there being little to do around here, and my last resort of online gaming being all but cut off, I am likely transferring out of here in a couple semesters. There are of course other factors, but this contributes.
April 20, 2007 at 12:11 am #20165Akuzan
Participantyea either the internet needs to be fixed or there needs to be something to do around here besides drinking…. i mean western is a good school but i think i could have more to do in a desert
April 20, 2007 at 12:22 am #20167gxti
ParticipantIdeally the packet shaper wouldn’t need to profile based on port, if it’s worth anything it can profile based on how much bandwidth something is using, so large downloads get pushed back while low-bandwidth games and such are let through first.
April 20, 2007 at 9:21 am #20171Oh Malley
ParticipantAlso, I think part of the lag on Halo 2 is caused by the emulation on the 360. I haven’t actually bothered to sit down and try it, but I think since the 360 is emulating Halo 2, that the program is causing some latency with the network speed. I may be wrong, but someone should test it out on just the standard-issue Xbox.
April 20, 2007 at 9:35 am #20172Akuzan
Participantnah i have a xbox in my room(normal) and it still does the same thing
April 20, 2007 at 1:02 pm #20176MasterP
ParticipantNone of the other backwards compatible consoles have any extra latency because they are running a previous generation game so I don’t imagine the Xbox would either although that would be an interesting thing to look up.
I have forwarded the Xbox Live! ports to AJ so they should be cleared through the filter within the next couple business days.
April 20, 2007 at 3:16 pm #20181Akuzan
Participantsweet! thanks MasterP

ParticipantSo, the awesome guys at the LAN looked it over and worked on it on-site, how’s it holding up so far?
