One time in High School, several of my classmates were talking about getting this car fixed up. One of the students reffered to the mechanics as “greece monkies.” The teacher overheard this and got mad at him because she thought it was a slur against Greek people.

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies

the title speaks for itself, but you ought to read it. It basically answers why the colonists in all of the Americas succeeded and natives failed.

I am already aware of all that. A combination of disease, rapid immigration from Europe, and the technological superiority of the colonists assured the destruction of the Indian tribes’ cultures. It just kinda *edited*es me off how some people characterize the founding of the country as a series of attrocities without any cause for celebration.

In summary: Pocahontas was the worst movie Disney Animation Studios made, with the possible exception of Home on the Range.

Without doubt there were genocidal *edited*s who commited attrocities against the Indians, but I’m just saying that a lot of people have turned those rare (and admitedly horrible) incidents into inaliable proof that America was founded on the suffering of natives. From what I’ve heard over the years, the role of disease has been downplayed and the malicous actions of colonists have been overstated while the attrocities commited by Indians against colonists and other Indians have been erased from history.

One of my favorite quotes on the subject:

“The exhibit points out that disease was the chief cause of suffering after European contact. Therefore, horrors that beset tha Ancient Americans following 1492 would have happened if the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria had been manned by Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama, and Bono.” –P.J. O’Rourke

That is not true at all. I don’t think one intelligent person would believe we were trying to “exterminate” the Indian population.

The key word there is “intelligent.” A few years ago HBO ran a mini-series about Wounded Knee with the tagline “In the late 19th century, the U.S. government waged a systematic campaign to exterminate American Indians–and nobody seemed to care.” It won an Emmy.

Why’s that? The vast majority of them pay absolutely no taxes at all and for the most part make their own laws. Yes they got screwed but right now they’ve probably got the best seat in the house.

Then again, they did get screwed hard…

Just to get a little further off topic:

The far majority of American Indian deaths that occured after the European colonists came to the continent were a result of disease that the colonists didn’t even realise they were spreading. It was overwhelmingly tragic, but in recent years it has been set aside in favor of a propagandic theory that the US Military held a policy of extermination towards the Indians. They didn’t, although there were several unjustifiable incidents of attrocities.

    And why is that?

Because there is no defense. Once he made the ridiculous statement, he lost the moral high ground on all political arguments from that point forward. Trying to explain it would just make him look worse.

I get the feeling the Go Green trend is on its way out. Once the economy went sour, it became it the new big issue. I’m not going to do anything for Earth Hour because it’s just an excuse for self-righteous hippies to feel good about themselves while making no real contribution to anything.

I have no idea why anyone would oppose hosting SF4 at the next LAN. When a game brings in a huge number of people at one LAN, it is only logical for it to be played at the next. It should be played and played until we see numbers decline.

Also, I think MK vs. DCU would be great. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat at the same LAN. That’s just cool.

Considering how popular ST4 was I’d say it would be adventageous to host it at least once more to gauge if attendees are still interested (which I believe they will be). It is very possible to do both ST4 and SC4 at the same LAN, as long as they are at totally different times and we nail down one system.

My suggested list for the next LAN:

    BRAWL.

    SFIV and/or SCIV.

GoW2/H3/CoD4 (Urging that at least 1 must be there).

    -Open-

    -Open-

-Open if only one fighter was chosen above.-

Both Street Fighter 4 and Soulcalibur 4 did very well. I think we should keep both.

    My ideal list:

    Street Fighter 4 (PS3)

    Soulcalibur 4 (PS3)

    Halo 3 (360)

    Gears of War 2 (360)

    Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)

    Mario Kart Wii (Wii)

Personally, I’d like to see a good mix of PS3 and 360 games. Maybe switch it so all fighting games will be played on PS3 and all shooters on 360. I kinda hope we vote in Halo 3. It usually draws in a lot of people. I think I’ll nominate the console version of L4D.
