    He bowed.

    Here is the video

fifty second mark to sixty second mark

Since the founding of the Republic, NO US President has EVER bowed to ANY monarch.

    Until Barack Obama.

I think this is the first time someone other than me has linked to Michelle Malkin’s blog.

    Oh look 1:48

Obama hugs Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, president of Brazil, for a full 3 seconds. That must mean he is homosexual. Because clearly all hugs are the same, and meant for sexual purposes. Just like all bows are the same and mean one thing…

could we be any more ignorant?

There are different ways to bow and different meanings.

    Still, that was pretty awkward

My dad told me to respect anyone who ever carries a gun for a living. When i get pulled over I use the word “Sir” or “Ma’am” about 4 times a sentence.

I even call people my own age Sir or ma’am just because it shows courtesy.

Kissing a greeting and holding the hand of a frail old man are considered acts of equals and of friendship.

Bowing to a monarch signifies subservience to the throne.

Barack Obama is the first and only President to bow to a monarch

Your looking to far into this one bud. It was just a sign of respect. He probably didnt know how to show respect in that situation so he did what he though was right.

it does not signify a *edited* thing

Is it not an act of respect to hold an old man’s hand? Is it not an act of respect to greet a middle eastern old man with a bow?

So he is the only president to bow to a monarch? That means what?

The majority of articles which have covered this are all a bunch of racist, conservative Muslim haters. All complaining about something as pointless and stupid as how a president should greet someone. Complaining because the Queen wasn’t greeted as generously and because she is christian and the other guy is muslim, like it’s some kind of ethical treason. Absolutely absurd. Can someone please show me the protocol on how the president should and should not act? I just want to see where it says president’s don’t bow. That’s a cool tradition, but protocol?

People fail to realize that other cultures do things differently and when you go to another culture you accept to do things their way or look like a total *edited* when you refuse to do so. I mean look at Canada, they drink milk from bags. They do some weird *edited* in other countries.

It used to be a point of pride that Americans bowed to no one (ie, we are a free people we answer to no one but ourselves), and so presidents espoused this idea and shook hands, embraced, kissed, but never bowed to foreign rulers as it is a sign of subservience.

Now, I don’t believe that Obama was bowing to show subservience, he was bowing because that’s what he thought was proper to do in that situation. He’s new to this kind of thing so I’d be willing to cut him a break. However, avoiding this kind of thing is what his staff are for. The amount of foreign protocol gaffs that he has made are astounding. (Giving the Queen of England an Ipod? After giving the PM of England a set of DVDs?) Again, I cannot blame these on him, its not like he has time to give thought to such things, but his staff does. They *edited*ed up big time and made him and the US look bad on the world stage.

Eventually we must again place this blame on Obama because he hired this group of incompetents. Again, he probably didn’t hire them directly, but some one he hired hired them. The Chicago machine that he brought with him to Washington is probably competent in other areas, but foreign protocol is new to them and Obama should have found someone else with more experience to do their jobs. He didn’t so now he and us get to look bad.

And to think that they made fun of Palin for not having foreign policy experience.

What are you talking about? Because I bet the majority of the people on this planet would approve of his trip. But screw the rest of the world right?

Also, according to another BILLION people (aka the muslim world) Obama did a fine job overseas. Did you not hear his speech in Turkey?

A ton of americans, including some conservatives, have all said he has made the U.S. look good overseas. Sure he had some gaffs, but nothing serious, what is more serious is how much he wants to get done. Oh noes trans-nationalism here we come!

What’s the difference between a King and a Tyrant? I think it has something to do with why Machiavelli says a republic is the most encompassing form of slavery.

What if you invited me to your house for dinner and I took a *edited* on your carpet and said “I dont have to be sorry, Im from bum*edited*istan, that’s how we roll dawg” ?

Is something that people have died for really just a matter of custom, simple as changing clothes?

What if the Saudi king came to america and we asked him to please take the burkha off his *edited*, told him it’s demeaning to women. Would you expect that of him. Why should it be a matter of respect that we are expected to abase ourselves likewise?

For oil. It’s why Obama “bowed”. It’s why Bush, destroyer of radical Islam, held hands and kissed the guy. Black blood of the earth. Ironically, will probably cause the fall of man. GG

For some reason I can’t edit my post above, but oh wells:

Im not saying that President Obama should bootlick world leaders around the world, but he genuinely possess the humility, the respect, the willingness to accept differences, and willing to admit past mistakes that were unreasonable.

Obama knows that America is NOT the Boss of the world but just another friend. Bush either really believed he was the boss or did not realize he was behaving like 1.

America used to be the boss of the world, because if anyone raised a hand against us or a friend we blew the crap out of them. *edited* like Kennedy and Obama are why our leaders have to bow IN SUBSERVIENCE to other world leaders and beg on our hands and knees for more oil, despite the fact we BUILT their oil infrastructure with our OWN sweat and blood.

Muslims think he did a great job overseas because he bowed IN SUBSERVIENCE to a Muslim king. They know that for the next 4 years they can do anything and get away with it. Watch, and learn what happens when you show weakness like this. When Obama leaves office, both N.Korea and Iran will have nukes and Israel will have been attacked at least once. Our responce will be, “oh *edited*, well I guess it’s too late to stop it now, we’ll just have to learn to live with it.”

And as far as this topic is concerned, google ethnocentrism.

Ultimately, this isn’t a big deal, but Obama’s lack of social grace continues to become more clear each day. Whether or not he was actually bowing doesn’t matter. It is still a gaffe which makes him look very weak. If you are the most powerful man on Earth, you do not bow to a foreign leader or put yourself in an awkward position before a foreign leader.

I have to agree with Citan. Bowing doesn’t always mean you’re being submissive. What about when people bow to greet one another (this also applies to curtsying for females)? Bows can be used to express different emotions, it’s not always about submission.

I’m not ruling out the possibility that Obama performed the wrong gesture for the situation he was in, but of you are completely ignoring the other reasons that one person may bow to another.

Actually, cross out what I said about ethnocentrism (though some of it seems to apply here) and replace it with jingoism.
