ParticipantAll digitial and retail versions require Origin be installed to play the game. When you buy from someone like Direct2Drive you simply get an unlock code to use on Origin.
Origin’s EULA allows EA to continually monitor the software that you install, uninstall, or use on your PC and is not prohibited from collecting personally identify information. The EULA further allows Origin to distribute this information to their “partners”. No kidding. After a public outcry EA changed the wording to be more vague but it’s still there.
The “server browser” is in a web browser outside the game. To join a server the game is launched from the browser. Similar to quick launch links that Steam allows except this is mandatory. To change servers while in-game, you have to quit the game. By contrast, the console version has a full-feature server browser.
It takes 100 hours to fully unlock everything in a kit. For example, you have to unlock the grenade launcher for each and every weapon in assault. Read as: the unlock process is going to be incredibly repetitive.
Oh, and due to a DLC conflict with Valve, the game won’t be offered on Steam. Ever.
The game looks gorgeous and from all accounts plays that way as well. It’s like EA and DICE got all the hard stuff right and the easy stuff wrong.

ParticipantI think it was around $350, that was for case, motherboard with integrated cpu/vga, RAM, fans. Re-used hard drives.
The price should have come down considerably since then. If you don’t care about watching HD movies or playing games you can get a dualcore atom motherboard with intel VGA for $75 or so. Most come with 2 SATA ports but you can get up to 6.
MasterP
ParticipantYou could always rebuild it with an Intel Atom. My HTPC/fileserver uses 35-45 watts.

ParticipantMike doesn’t have the authority to override or contest this rule. No matter how dumb he may find it, it’s very unlikely he’ll attempt to intervene on our behalf because of the possible political fallout involved. Everything at WCU is political and getting on the wrong side of something, anything, isn’t wise. When it comes to student rules and affairs, how close you are to Keith Corzine’s office in Scott is typically the indicator as to how much of a power you have to change things. Mike is in the UC, Walter is like 3 doors down from Keith.
Trust me, he’s not going to get upset that you skipped him. This is a judicial affairs issue and is something he knows he has no say on. In fact, if you go there and get something he feels is stupid changed, without asking him to get involved at all, the initiative may actually garner more respect from him. Then again it could also spark some jealousy that we have more sway in Scott 1st than he does. Either way, don’t think for one second that he has the authority to prevent you from hosting LAN events in the UC. All clubs at WCU are entitled to host events where ever they please and any problems he throws in your way would be easily dealt with by Keith.
Talk to Mike if you feel you must, but the real change will occur when you talk to Walter. You may even have to play your ace in the hole (Keith) but I would only do that as an absolute last resort.

ParticipantMaybe now I’ll be able to stand playing the game…
MasterP
ParticipantI can set this up when I do the TF2s this weekend. Since the configs are almost identical, maybe try both?
MasterP
ParticipantOne thing you might look at doing is having the club host MTG events seperate from the LAN events and have no entry fee but do have a physical object prize, like boosters. I know you’ve done this already with donated prizes but hear me out. This may cost the club money but you could offset that by having a freeplay MTG tournament at the LAN with the prize being a first round bye at a MTG event or some such. Such a system would encourage MTG players to come to the LAN, where they DO pay to enter, but since they’d be playing other games as well, which isn’t against school policy, the money you make off them is legit on the books. That money should easily offset the cost of prizes at seperate MTG events.

Sometimes when people think your idea is bad it’s not because they’re an *edited* or don’t like you, sometimes it really is a bad idea. Depending on how you approach an MTG tournament it could be considered gambling on state property which nets the entire exec staff (and you) misdemeanor charges, expulsion from WCU, and gets the gaming club banned from operating in the state of NC.
When we tried to tell you guys how risky card games are we were trolled into oblivion <_>
I would bypass Mike Corelli and go straight to Walt Turner. He’s the one that would be in charge of any judicial proceedings brought against students participating in this or the club for hosting it were a tournament found to be in violation of school or state law. His response should be the only one considered final on this subject. Don’t email him, go sit down in his office and talk to him. On paper MTG is a violation of the “game of chance” laws, in practice not so much. See if he’ll work with you, he probably will, but I’m telling you right now if you give out cash prizes or gift cards you will not get permission to play this at the LANs. You need SWAG or physical objects such as boosters to have any chance of getting his blessing.

ParticipantTo be fair, Windows Server 2008 is just as simple. Also, prior to this change, Apple Airports would, and still might, erase an IP/MAC address once the computer has been inactive for 10-15 minutes whereas even vanilla Linksys firmware keeps that information in the routing table until the DHCP lease expires, or permanently if you use DHCP reservation.
Again, without direct support from Windows, functionality like this is going to be difficult to program into the router. The router won’t automatically know if the computer is sleeping or shut down and the only way for it to be able to tell the difference is by sending a magic packet and seeing if the computer wakes up, obviously not what you want. The only real alternative to direct OS support is to tell the router to always assume that your computer is sleeping and has X services available, again not really ideal because a powered down computer will still have its services advertised to the network.
MasterP
ParticipantThe NIC itself can only do it for what the firmware is programmed for. For most consumer-grade NICs, that’s going to be a magic packet. It really has nothing to do with networking layers as the WOL-enabled NIC would be using layers layers 1-3 just like the router.
Apple recently expanded the WOL functionality in Snow Leopard to allow the OS to hand off Bonjour services to the Apple Airports. This is what your friend is talking about. Basically OSX tells the router that it’s going into WOL mode and the router memorizes what services that computer was making available and continues to broadcast them as available. When another computer wishes to use one of the services, the Airport sends a magic packet to the computer, waits X seconds, and then forwards along the service request to the computer. This is something that has to be made available at the software level and the router has to support it. AFAIK Windows 7 doesn’t support anything like this and I don’t imagine custom router firmware will either. Now that there’s a calling for it they might add the feature but if the OS doesn’t communicate the desire to use the feature there’s not much point.
And yeah, there’s so much else that Apple Airports either can’t do or suck at doing that they aren’t worth getting. I don’t even do remote support for them, they’re so touchy feely that without sitting down in front of one there’s no way to tell what’s wrong. And the average person using one, IE a Mac tard/fanboy, isn’t the type of person that makes remote support fun and/or easy.
MasterP
ParticipantAFAIK, there is no way to make it wake up for specific protocols. When WOL is activated, the network adapter waits for a specific frame sent to a specific port. There’s not a whole lot of flexibility since the actual waiting functionality is firmware based.
MasterP
ParticipantYou can’t get a PC to wake on literally any network traffic as that’s not what wake on LAN is designed to do. If it were to wake the machine up when receiving any packet the PC would be asleep for less than a second before being woken up by a broadcast frame or a keepalive frame for a TCP connection. The only way to wake a computer up is by sending a “magic packet” which is a frame that contains a broadcast packet, which instructs routers and switches to send to all LAN ports on the local subnet, and 16 repetitions of the target computer’s MAC address. You’ll need a “server” program to activate this functionality on the target computer and a “client” program to craft the packet needed to wake it up. Windows7 has the “server” functionality built in and there are several websites and utilities you can use to wake it up remotely.
A decent guide:
http://windows7-issues.blogspot.com/2011/03/wake-on-lan-wol-for-windows-7-made-easy.html
Ninja add: It looks like Win7 can wake on any packet, I highly recommend you don’t do this. Your computer will wake up at random times.

ParticipantOur TF2 idles can be alot of fun if you get the right crowd in there.
If you can wait until the end of the week I can redo the pubs from scratch and set them up for multi-instancing so they’ll be more consistent, all you’d need to do is PM me a mapcycle for each you wanted.

ParticipantIt’s a tube magazine attachment for pump and semiauto shotguns that adds up to 26+1 capacity. It’s pretty pricey, though, sometimes twice as much as the gun itself.
For Remington 870s you can get up to 22+1: https://www.xrailbyrci.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=dbff0ac43a57d376254e328df93bac1b&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=xrail&Product_Code=1103-0001FRB&Category_Code=xrail_remington

ParticipantYeah I didn’t even know this section existed and when that thread was made a few days ago it didn’t exist. I moved it here for convenience and will rename both threads per your request.
You definately need someone on campus to be the official point of contact for Halo, I was simply offering to help. The fact that it won a vote is shocking to me, I’m tempted to drive to the LAN just for it. Been a long time since I’ve raped face in it

Definately get where you’re coming from on TF2, my point is simply that there needs to be a basic system in place to help people form teams at the LAN. Once it’s time to start then yeah they should already be formed and ready to go. My suggestion is to call everyone up who’s interested in playing the games, explain how to connect to the servers, etc, and then ask people who aren’t in teams to hang around and form them. Just knowing who else doesn’t have partners goes a long way in moving forward the process of forming teams out of complete strangers.
For 2011.1 I redid the entire LAN infrastructure and wrote a set of rcon configs from scratch. None of the servers conflict and admin instructions are available here. The servers are running multi-instancing so you can create additional servers with identical configs on the fly.
MasterP
ParticipantConsoles already have their rulesets posted

Not offering any assistance in forming teams at the LAN is a huge mistake. When they sign in at the front desk they should be asked if they’re on a team or if they need to be matched up with one. This takes 5 minutes at most and shouldn’t be a problem. Leaving players on their own is going to be a major problem with TF2, you can’t hope to cash in on the freeness of the game if new players aren’t allowed to play it because they’re new.
For Halo I recommend a format similar to current-day CEVO. There were very few tournaments back when it was popular but if you need help creating a ruleset I can give some pointers, I played the game religiously for a number of years. You need to decide if you want to go CTF with 5 man teams or team slayer with 2-4 man teams. I would recommend CTF with minimal vehicles due to the level of team coordination required but that’s just me.
Also, at the last 2 LANs you’ve had dedicated servers running for TF2 and didn’t use them. If I put the dedicated servers up again, will you use them?

ParticipantFar Cry 2 version 1.03 removed the activation system altogether and their servers no longer track new installs. For retail, anyway, idk about the Steam version.
For most FC2 users, overly protective DRM was the least of their concerns lol
MasterP
ParticipantDo the Steam versions of those game do that? I can’t imagine Valve tolerating it.
MasterP
ParticipantThat’s a pretty good picture as to why Valve has been so successful and other publishers and developers haven’t.
