Far from it.

ParticipantLucasarts games are never optimized very well for the platforms they’re on.
I think the last well made game was for DOS.

You didn’t really miss much. Fire up Jedi Outcast for a few hours and you’ll get a much better Star Wars fix.
If you want to dual wield or or use a staff saber you can try Jedi Academy. The 32 man online battles in Jedi Academy are nice but the single largest blow to Star Wars online play was when the Jedi Outcast servers started to die.

Any truth to that?

ParticipantWe got almost all of our Reslife sponsoring back when Brenton took office so I’d definately talk to Keith about it. If he’s willing to buy pizza for the event I can’t imagine 200 color copies being outside his price range.

ParticipantHow does standing up to the “cut taxes” mantra save someone with cerebral palsy?
MasterP
ParticipantKeith gave us free copies for years. As we’ve said for months now, we aren’t a typical campus club, we have the backing of Residential Living and can get pretty much anything we need to be successful.
Go talk to Keith and ask for free fliers. 99% chance you’ll get them. If you don’t go through Keith then yeah, you will have to pay.
MasterP
ParticipantThere’s no need to stop the epic. We’ll continue on despite the absence of Major.
MasterP
ParticipantYeah I realized that about 3 weeks after I moved back up there. No one was really interested in the screw ups or dirty laundry of anyone else but they loved to care about the occasional one I made. I mean my manager didn’t care at all that $120,000 was missing from our budget for the last few years or that another department had broke a contractual agreement with us but when it’s reported that I p2p’d in my apartment THAT’S suddenly a huge deal or something. At least there was evidence that the money was missing, what I do at my apartment in my own free time can’t be proven by anyone.

ParticipantPrice check from the print shop should be free, if you need more than the 2XX free copies we get you’re much better off printing your own. You’ll save money. This is why we typically had 2 fliers, a color and a black/white. We routinely got free copies from random departments and black/white printing is always cheaper on your own printer than paying the school. You can still get free copies from department printers but it’s tricky and not really worth the hassle.
If the print shop in any way even pretends to want money from us go talk to Keith.
If you do need more fliers and the print shop wants more than a couple pennies per copy you’re better off driving to walmart and buying a black cartridge and some cheap paper and doing it yourself. Talk to Tallgeese in advance and he can let you record expenses and the club can pay you back.
—caution: off topic rant—
When they outsourced the print system it should have reduced the cost to print, at least that’s what the school thought using their imaginary form of business economics. I don’t think they realize that outsourcing a local service after you’ve bought all the equipment, and then losing all the equipment in the agreement, is a giant waste of money. Whoever had that bright idea should have their breeding rights revoked for extremely stupidity as should whoever in management stupid enough to believe that losing 100+ very expensive printers could, in any way, even remotely save money. Even if you saved $.05 per copy, if you lost a hundred $800 printers in the deal you have to print 1.6 million copies before you start saving money. Not only that but the company you outsourced to is a subsidiary of Ricoh, which has the highest per-page cost in the laser print industry and some of the highest energy usage rates. Read as: it’s not cheaper to the contractor so it won’t be cheaper to you. Congratulations, you saved a penny by paying 2. Most of what IT does behind the scenes is either stupid or textbook stealing, like how they had a 400% profit margin on Office03 and WinXP and a 100% profit margin on Vista, Office07, and Windows7. I mean I know screwing students is fun and all but charging students 5x more for something than you bought it for? Whoever set that up is the one who should’ve been calling the shots on this print thing. When I inquired about the pricing markups a few years back I was told I didn’t know what I was talking about. When I then pulled out a copy of the pricing schedule straight from the Microsoft agreement I promptly had my access to the staff network share revoked. I mean yeah I shouldn’t have had it to begin with but if you don’t like people finding and shining light on your dirty secrets you probably shouldn’t be doing shady crap to start with and if you suck at hiding stuff you definately don’t have any business doing that sort of thing. Giving an anal retentive student with a ton of free time access to the IT division network share is just asking for trouble. It’s also a violation of the WCU network security policy but hey who’s counting *edited* ups at this point. There’s just so many, like a certain IT department agreeing to universal student wages then hiring some at a higher rate than others already working there. Or ignoring missing money. Or paying students from one department using the wage allotments of another department. Or putting an IT repair shop with tons of virus infected machines on the same subnet as an entire IT department with no firewalls.
—end of rant—
Maybe ask Keith if the print costs really did go down with the new agreement (not a chance in hell) and if they did see if we can get more copies. The answer’s going to be no but it can’t hurt to ask anyway.

ANDD there are rules about when posters and flyers can be hung up. I think its within a week or 2 before the event that they can go up. So posting them around campus now will get teh gaming club a fine. BUT you can hang them around asheville wherever, and basically anywhere other than on campus. As far as the costs go, ill see what we can do as soon as possible and let you know a waffle.
Keep in mind that it usually takes the print shop an incredibly long time to “get to” our fliers. They used to average 3 weeks to print them. We need to have them finalized and sent to be printed by this time next week to ensure that we get them in time. We may get them really quick, which would be great, but I’d rather them sit around and collect a little dust than not be ready in time.
Also worth noting is that I don’t think we’ve ever posted fliers on campus more than a week ahead of time. Anything longer and they would typically be torn down by RA’s or other clubs.

ParticipantKeep in mind that your goal is to attract people that AREN’T playing this all the time online as well. The first SC tournament we had was primarily made of people that didn’t play online often. When you start putting jargon on there like “blizz maps” the average player will have the same reaction I just had: “what the hell does that mean?” I mean yeah I inferred that it’s official Blizzard maps but when a potential player sees that and doesn’t understand you automatically turn them off to the tournament because they assume, weeks before the event, that it’s for pros only. No matter what you put out after that they’ll automatically ignore it because in their mind it’s a pros-only event.
I’d recommend putting “1v1” and “Official maps” but anything beyond that will be too daunting. The pros will see it and know that it’ll be a “best of” system and that you likely won’t be able to change races mid-match while the non-pros will also get the basic info they need to decide whether or not to play. Too much info risks cluttering the flier and they’re only going to see it for an average of 5 seconds unless they stop everything they’re doing to read it. The most important thing is that in those 5 seconds they get the game, date, and location. If they have to stop to get any of that they likely won’t.

Wow i quit so glad i was informed about this.
So the treasurer just compiled a *edited* near epic list of sponsorship opportunities and this new guy created fliers that rival the best we’ve ever put out and all you can do is troll Dice?
And you guys think I’m an *edited*…
I mean the thread is called “advertisement” and you’re the “marketing admin”, the least you can do is contribute something meaningful beyond a trite one-liner.

The PC VP hasn’t been on the forums in a month. You’re probably better off just not putting rules on the fliers at this point.

ParticipantI’m convinced. That guy writes epic reviews. Watch them all. His Attack of the Clones review is pretty good.
MasterP
ParticipantThat should be required viewing in film school.
EDIT: All 7 parts of the review should be required viewing for the entire planet.
MasterP
ParticipantYeah I won’t believe it until I’m in the theater watching it. And even then I won’t fully believe it until the credits start scrolling.

Mitch, I’m pretty sure you are talking about expanded universe stuff and I doubt Lucas would adapt other people’s work when he could just come up with his own stories. Expect fail.
You be surprised, actually. The Thrawn Crisis is considered canonical, as are many of the trilogy novels that take place after RotJ. Now there’s a point where the canon stops but I think it’s pretty well established up to around 100 years after RotJ.
Now granted, canonical doesn’t implicitly mean Lucas-approved but if he plans on re-writing the series’ canon he’ll create a massive exodus of fans in the process.
MasterP
ParticipantIt’s been rumored for years that Lucas was going to do a 7-9 trilogy. Tbh, there’s much more of what fans want, action and thought-provoking political backstabbing, in the years following the Return of the Jedi and significantly less of what the fans hate, sappy, love story, character development.
7-9 would include the Thrawn saga which has some of the most epic battles in the Star Wars timeframe. I mean this is the guy that took Coruscant out of the war without losing a single ship. Epic doesn’t do him justice.
Althought it wouldn’t surprise me in Lucasarts labels the entire Thrawn Campaign to be non-cannon and replaced it with their own rendition. Considering how he likes screw the fans over, that’s probably the route he’ll take.

ParticipantWhen someone sponsors us they get advertising to the student population and regional gamers.
MasterP
ParticipantIt’s worth investigating but in this economy it’ll be a hard sell.
Pushing student and regional advertising will be your best bet when trying to pick up local sponsors. Don’t forget to mention that we’re the largest club on campus, that fact alone can make all the difference. People are more willing to sponsor a large club because their donation is buying more exposure.
MasterP
ParticipantWe don’t actually monitor the hits to individual sponsors but that’s definately worth looking into. More ammo never hurt.
If someone sponsors us that doesn’t mean they get fliers, banners, or posters on campus. What we do is hang their banners or posters during the event (in or around the room) and if they sponsor us early enough we can mention them on the fliers we hang. If they sponsor an actual event (meaning they foot the prize), make sure the sponsor’s name goes in the event name. For example, The Gamestop Brawl Tournament.
You mentioned alot of good ideas. I’m not sure what’s been listed so far in this thread so i’ll pump out a list of what we’ve done in the past, who to talk to, and how effective it seemed.
Dorm fliers – talk to keith for free printing – works well but sometimes RA/RD conflict
UC Banner(s) – talk to UC info desk – works well but keep on them or they wont put it up (we should have 2 banners)
Napkin holders in dining halls – talk to aramark – works extremely well, no conflicts or hassles were reported
high schools – area highschools prohibit advertising for this, been tried by several administrations
Facebook – adam/ashley faulkner, nodice, or thor – works well
email list – adam faulkner/liam/myself and tallgeese – works well, we can push a mass email from the forums but tallgeese has the newer student list
Steamgroup announcement – like any alumni (lol) – less effective for students but can pull in off campus well, many regional “hardcore” PC players watch this
in the PC servers – domo, liam, or myself – typically works well but servers aren’t populated so not effective for this event
Craigs list, the school website, lan centers/arcades, the comm college, all are good ideas worth looking into. Even with a marketing admin, the entire exec used to work towards getting, keeping, and appeasing sponsors. When the job is being done correctly it’s easily the hardest position in the club and you’ll go crazy trying to do it by yourself. Recruit the pres and VPs, or anyone who can write coherent sentences and has free time, to help because you’re going to need it.
Please add to your list of potentials to look into: XFX, eVGA, Sapphire, Newegg, Zipzoomfly, Logitech, and Saitek.

ParticipantDomo should have access to all the remote update scripts I wrote. With those he doesn’t even need to RDP into Atari to update a gameserver, it can all be done remotely in a web browser.
