ParticipantI remember I kinda lost interest in CS:S for CoD4 because of the stats progression in CoD4… Maybe something like that? I remember we had some kind of rank, but something more in depth might be more appealing.
distemper
ParticipantEr, is everyone talking about HoN now?
If anyone wants to play LoL, I’m starting to get back into it.
distemper
ParticipantHonestly, I’m not sure.
I actually went on Machinima’s forums earlier today, and it seems like capture cards do work with PCs, since people have several posts that imply that they have video captured using capture cards.
I need to finish a paper at the moment, but, if I find out something interesting, a hardware alternative to Fraps would certainly be interesting, since even Fraps can take a toll on framerate on weaker systems when recording.
distemper
ParticipantI do like, LoL, though I haven’t played in a really long time.
distemper
ParticipantMy bad, I guess. I don’t know much about this stuff, but apparently, with the XBox or the PS3, you can “capture” your gameplay from a TV screen and transfer that to your computer using a capture card. What I was hoping was that it would work with a regular LCD screen as well. Guess not.
distemper
ParticipantCapture cards won’t capture video from my computer? Really? There’s nothing like the capture cards that work for the PS3 or the Xbox 360, only for PC?
Again, the reason why I won’t buy from the internet or fraps is the lack of a credit card. So, it’s not an option, at all.
distemper
ParticipantWhat about video capture cards?

ParticipantHey MasterP,
That is the right driver. The driver I was using before this was the 9200M GS driver downloaded from the nVidia website: http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_winvista_win7_x64_195.62_whql.html
The thing is, under supported products, my card is listed under 9M Series.
As for the Hardware IDs,
I found them, and there are a few:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E8&SUBSYS_3603103C&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E8&SUBSYS_3603103C
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E8&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E8&CC_0300
Thanks again for helping.

well really at this point though you need to go back to vista with the full system restore and see if the problem is still there. If it is, its a hardware problem that HP needs to fix, if not then you need to figure out wtf the problem is.Yeah, but I don’t have the Vista recovery disk on me or an External HD to back up my stuff in case of a crash yet. I’m going to try every available option before turning to that.
distemper
ParticipantActually, this is kind of the problem.
I am running Windows 7, but I’m not supposed to be running Windows 7 on this computer. According to the tech support guy, I should be running vista on this computer and all the 2008 drivers. Yes, the dv series has Windows 7 drivers, but apparently, not this one. Microsoft’s software check approved my computer to run Win7, but the guy told me that if I was running Win7 on this computer, even if I had an extended warranty, they would not do anything for me unless I reverted my system back to Vista, since I was in breach of the warranty by changing the OS.
Well, the flashing screens and the suddenly “white-outs” are starting to happen again. I’m not exactly sure what is the cause exactly, but I’m going to play it safe and get a external HD to back up my data asap.
Thanks for the help, guys.
distemper
ParticipantFalcon, you got it right again.
I contacted HP, and the guy was able to give me a hand, even though my warranty expired. According to them, it’s not my systems board/motherboard, but rather, the fact that I have Windows 7 and a newer graphics driver installed.
I was originally going to wait it out after being skeptical about what MasterP said, but then I got scared when more problems started happening, such as these faint horizontal gray bars(kinda like what you see on CRT screens when they’re filmed, except more of them) moving from the top of the screen towards the bottom. So, I called HP. Basically, I had installed this new graphics driver(released this past december) for my video card, the nVidia 9200M GS, and lots of games I was playing, such as GTA4, Mass Effect 2, etc… were running a lot better. Turns out that my PC, built in late 2007, doesn’t support that driver. I installed the driver I was supposed to have(released in 2008), and the games ran slower, but the bars disappeared. Also, I had installed Windows 7 around December, and in retrospect, I think this is when the problems started. I still deal with an occasional white screen, but I can’t get vista again, since I don’t have a recovery disk.
Also, I had a crapload of dust in my fan, and I couldn’t hear the screwed up sound of the fan running because I use a fanned cooling pad(the noise blocks out the sound of the built in fan), and my computer was nowhere near overheating because of it.
distemper
ParticipantAlright, I’ll contact them as soon as possible…
Do I need to back up any data, or will that not be affected?
Also, wait, is system board=motherboard? Cause that might alleviate A LOT of my confusion…
distemper
ParticipantHuh? What?
Thanks for the info… but, can you elaborate? What’s a systemboard?
I can’t get it replaced immediately, since this is the only computer I have at the moment… again, this only happens during startup and watching full screen video for a few seconds.
Finally, is there anything I shouldn’t be doing while this is still a problem, like, play a game, etc…?
distemper
ParticipantI think Borderlands is really the perfect game. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t find the game that addictive(a good thing). I can pop in whenever I want, or when I just want to run around and kill stuff with a friend or solo, and I can drop it pretty easily too, since all progress and loot gets saved.
Shingi, I think I have your Steam. We should totally play sometime.
distemper
ParticipantThanks folks, borderlands it is! Perfect too, since I just got a bestbuy coupon for a 10% discount!
EDIT:
Actually, just a quick question if someone knows… I’m going to be getting the Best Buy copy, since I can get a discount there, instead of the game over steam.
Is there any way I can “sync” the hard copy of the game with my steam account? Aka, I can load the game via steam and don’t need a CD?
The reason I’m asking is that I do know it is possible for several other games.
EDIT EDIT:
Apparently, while Gearbox was so busy making this game awesome and such, they have forgotten to make copy protection for the game. An acquaintance of mine also tells me that he’s playing in a party of four with his pirated copy… 😐
But, as a clarification for what I asked earlier, since there is no CD key, there is no way for one to “add” borderlands to steam. The only way to do it is to buy it through steam, which I won’t be doing due to my Best Buy coupon.

ParticipantThis might just be me, but I actually don’t like office too much. Because office is a “rescue the hosties” map, there really is only one way to accomplish the objective, and it gets pretty boring round after round after round. T’s camp in the same spots, CTs rush the same places, rinse, repeat. Only rarely do we ever get the more intrepid players who Rush garage as T, or hell, try to ninja the hosties

out from the vile grasp of the

.
Dust2, at least, is unpredictable. The T’s can do any number of things, for instance, fake the a long A rush only to go B, etc… Office, on the other hand, is just rescue the hosties! Rush garage if you’re T and we can catch them by surprise! Again, this might just be me, but I don’t find it that appealing. Once hosties are being moved, a couple of t’s just go camp garage. Fun.
Office really shares the same problem with Italy, only the T’s don’t have as much of a camp advantage.
I’m not trying to beat on Hostage rescue maps, but its a fact that they usually just end up being team deathmatches, whether the CTs try to rescue the hosties or not.

Thanks for the heads up, Lemm.

The rule is so teams don’t come and dominate at the LANs and ruin the fun, casual experience. >,> That’s what I’ve been told during my tenure as console council leader and such. That certainly makes sense.
distemper
ParticipantYeah, but that’s the same with lots of teams, I’ve noticed. Most of what’s sketchy is really just experience and excellent prefire.
distemper
ParticipantYeah.
However, I also got slapped in the face by a massive *edited* of reality. I had hoped that my new mouse would elevate my to the fighting prowess of fRoSt,__hollywood, or lawlrence, only to find myself scoring 4-17 and getting farmed on the WCU server.
Then, I realized that it was because when I was playing squash yesterday, I bent my thumb the wrong way or something, and today, I snapped it back into place, and now I’m cool again.
Walnuts.

ParticipantI really do hope GG gets back up.
Lemm really put a lot of work into that server. I remember logging in at like, 3 or 4 in the morning, only to find you online in the gungame server, testing stuff.
distemper
ParticipantI’d get in touch with some of the folks in RageQuit.
distemper
ParticipantCongratulations on your post, Lemm!
A few questions regarding the server though:
1) Is it possible to program the server to allow the players to utilize votekick if and when no admin is present, and only in that situation?
WCU has had an issue where a hacker will enter the server and screw up the game for everyone, only for someone present with one the admins on their friends list or ICQ to message them to solve the problem. Now, this is fine, except it becomes problematic when A ) an admin is not online or B ) the players on the server don’t have an admin friended. I can definitely see a potential for misuse, but I think it might be useful.
2) What if we got rid of the map “rotation” entirely, and just had a vote towards the end of each round for a map out of a list of all possible maps, which the community would pick out?
Obviously, these are just for your consideration.

I know you’ve only been here for about 5 months but trust me when I say it’ll be abused. Those that had the power on our various other servers have abused it quite a bit. If I were to get rid of all the admins I don’t trust 100% we’d be down to like 4. I trust them to do their job but at the same time I’m realistic about abuse because every admin abuses, some just do it more than others.Regardless of what you may think, I do know what I’m talking about.
I don’t really see how any of what I said up there led you to believe that I feel you’re incompetent. I simply disagree with the fact that you allow administrators to handle bans, yet you don’t allow them to handle something like changing a map. Now, if an admin actually abuses his or her powers with something like a map change, I really have no idea why that person is an admin to begin with.
I know I’ve been here for only a short while. I’m not trying to play johnny come lately and throw a wrench in the inner mechanics of WCU’s administration, et al. Part of my bias results from the fact that I’ve seen this work on other servers quite well.
Before WCU, and during some of my time at WCU, I played a game called Freelancer, and there was a very well made mod of it, called Discovery. Now, the professionalism that I saw carried on by those Admins and Mods were beyond compare. Part of my bias for people being good admins comes from that as well.
Quote:
If I were to get rid of all the admins I don’t trust 100% we’d be down to like 4.That’s probably a good idea, MasterP. Because if you don’t trust the current admins with the ability to change maps, you might as well give it to 4 and make the rest “Mods.” On top of that, now, in addition to the execs, we will have 4 extra people who can change maps.
Again, this is just me, but I don’t know why you’d allow someone you don’t trust 100% to be an admin.

The maps in play now were publicly decided on and unless a retard gets put in power so will the next ones. When they ask for map recommendations, don’t do what you did the last 3 times. Next time only recommend maps you know the server populace will like, not what you personally like.
For example, I know cpl_fire sucks and I said it would kill the server. At the time people wanted it and it was put in.
Well, MasterP, the only problem to what you’ve said is that lots of maps are great. So, sure, we can turn WCU into a popular map only server, but there is a significant amount of people who like maps like sk3. I’ve been pushing for that map to be dropped from rotation every single time a rotation vote’s come up. But, it never gets dropped.
Why?
Not because the general public likes sk3, but the fact that there is a large contingent of people here at WCU who like the map. And that large contingent can, by itself, fill the server.
So, the problem with just leaving it means that when this large contingent is not around, the server empties. But, if we do remove it from the rotation, the large contingent that really matters(since this is the WCU server, will balk.
Quote:
The discussion on allowing admins to directly change maps has been debated over for years. I chose not to allow it because it’s a power that’s very commonly abused and when you factor in people quitting over the abuse of it you’ll end up about where you started in terms of players. RTV was put on the server to allow the general public to change the server if the need existed and until recently it seemed to be sufficient.RTV is usually sufficient. The problem with RTV is that when the server is empty to begin with, there’s no way you can RTV out of the bad maps that are keeping the server empty. It’s a cyclical pattern.
Now, regarding abuse, I guess I was wrong.
So, you’re saying that the execs and the council leaders have such a lack of confidence in their administrators that they can’t give them the ability to change maps?
Why not take away the admin’s ability to ban, slap, and kick people as well?
Or hell, just change “admin” to “temper moderators.”
We’ll have our guys stroll around the server and calm people down when their teammates steal defuses.

Maps like Strata will empty the server in the night time because they are too big for small numbers to enjoy…season is pushing it at night as well…
Drop sk3 and maps like deagle5. Keep them around, so if people want to play, they can rtv to it, or admins can choose it.
You’re also forgetting cs_cbble, losttemplepro, and piranesi, which are great maps.
