Does it have to be Red Cross? They have an extremely poor track record of actually giving funds where they’re supposed to go.
Wait, I thought Red Cross was one of the few charities that actually got the money to the people in Haiti. Of course, I think they also messed up the 9/11 fund…

ParticipantFor the last year-and-a-half, we have been without sponsors. In less than a semster, we have gotten two excellent sponsors. Great work guys!

ParticipantI’m thinking about picking up Homefront. The gameplay looks pretty cool and I like the storyline seems interesting. However, I’ve heard the game has received mixed reviews, so I’m not sure.
One thing I find interesting is how the main villain was switched from China to North Korea. See, the game was originally supposed to be about the Chinese invading America, but the developers were afraid of offending China. What makes this interesting is that Homefront was written by John Milius, who wrote the origina Red Dawn. Recently, it was announced that Red Dawn was going to be rmade with China as the main enemy, but it was changed to North Korea during post-production, because the filmakers were afraid of losing money in the Chinese market. Basically, a movie and a video game with the same story were being developed at the same time, then altered in the same way for the same reason, and John Milius has a connection to both. Interesting.

ParticipantI never bought a DSi. I just didn’t see enough of a jump from the Lite to justify it. However, I’m already $200 down on the 3DS. I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about it.

ParticipantI’m gonna preorder Portal 2, partially because I’m sure there will be some sort of promotional TF2 item associated with it.
Also, Brotherhood’s been out for a while now. It’s good.

Wait, what just happened?
Ephraim
ParticipantNah. If you brought a console, you’d have to let everyone use it, but a headset is more for your own private use.

ParticipantLast semester, the fliers went about 24 hours before the LAN. Getting them up four days in advance is an improvement.

ParticipantHmm. I got a little concerned about the whole ‘alternate reality’ thing (because I’m a great big neeeeeeeeerd) so I decided to do a little research. I found this interview with one of Star Trek 2009’s writers. He said that despite the creation of a new timeline, the old timeline remains intact. It’s not that the old timeline was snuffed out by the new one, but rather that the new one and the old one exist simultaneously. Cool. One of my main concerns was that the creators of this film were saying that all Star Trek stories told before their movie were out of canon. Apparently, they’re not. That’s nice. I can dig the idea of a new universe, as long as respect is payed to the previous.
All the same, I’m not interested in seeing the new movie because I still think it looks dumb.
In Summary:

ParticipantGee, I wonder what Josh thinks about all this.

See the problem is that the original timeline has been spent. They can’t create any more TNG-based movies because the last two have been abysmal failures at the box office. The TNG crew just can’t act the parts anymore. The only place where they can safely make movies is the pre-TNG but they can’t really do that without having to tip-toe around the original backstory for the original Star Trek and we know even the slightest slip up will be noticed and boo’d in theaters. The solution? Create an alternate timeline where even if you contradict something from TOS you can write it off as the alternate character making a different decision. I mean as far as giving themselves room to maneuver, it was genious.
The idea of creating a Star Trek reboot has legs to it, but I kind of see it as a betrayl to fans of the old series to say that all those stories they enjoyed never actually happened and are no longer a part of canon. Now if both continuities were still said to exist in some fashion, it would probably be easier to take. Sure it’s nerdy, but it would add a psychological comfort.
All that being said, this new Star Trek universe looks too trendy for me. It’s like they’re trying to hard to be cool and not hard enough to be smart.

ParticipantI didn’t mean there were more sex scenes so much as there was more sexuality in general. Again, I didn’t see the movie, but I recall the trailers playing up some scantily clad women. It seemed a bit sleazy for Star Trek, closer to a trailer for a teenage comedy than a sci-fi film.
