ParticipantOh yeah, well I take credit for the most threads created in 2010.
Although, I have no idea if this is true.

no expansion
goth spearmen hordes have been my victory
seriously, just max wood and food, some gold and rush with pikemen (upgraded spearmen) and i dominate. i do use some rams because they offer good damage without friendly fire killing all my guys or requiring setup time or spotters or castles. *edited* castles, 4 barracks and churn out the pikemen
but of course, i’ve only been playing the computer. but i love this. against normal infantry i suffer, but typically i have so many more than the computer than i overrun their troops. if they have cavalry? they get ze raped by the pikeys. *edited* is SO cash
this has been a ‘raine has too much free time’ update in the ‘lemm needs things to read thread’

ParticipantI always preferred the Chinese chu ko nu. Since they fire 3 arrows per volley they do very well against most units and still maintain good damage against anti-archer units. It also serves as an extremely powerful garrison unit. The only way to counter a mass of them is an even larger mass of heavy horse or ranged artillery, which typically doesn’t stay ranged for long

At 40 wood and 35 gold it’s a really cheap way unit to mass produce and with conscription takes very little time to produce.

I’ve never played empires… so I don’t totally understand your epic game playing story. Is the object of the game to rule the world?

ParticipantWhen you account for inflation, Star Trek 4 is the highest grossing film in the series to date. WITHOUT accounting for inflation it’s still higher than all the others except ST11 in 2009. The budget? 1/6 of what the newest one used.
Don’t get me wrong, ST11 is decent but for all the visuals I still like ST2, ST4, and ST6 more. The plot seemed stale and reused. I mean aliens traveling from the future to destroy the federation? The ENTIRE Star Trek Enterprise series was based on that plot.
Maybe ST12 will be better, idk. Hopefully it doesn’t involve a giant spacecloud, Khan, time travel, or whales. If it does I’ll feel as ripped off as my dad did with the Battlestar Galactica remake.

ParticipantI’ve never really had an urge to see the Star Trek reboot. Even though everybody raves about how awesome it is, it just seems like a really dumbed down version of Star Trek.
On a related note: if you would like to read a review of the new Star Trek from a homosexual Canadian with serious psychological problems, click here!

ParticipantIt was a good movie.. it was not a dumbed down version of star trek.. Haters gonna hate.
I’ve seen all the classic star trek movies and all the next gen movies. I think the only reason people aren’t liking it is because it’s making Star Trek more mainstream and popular to people who aren’t nerds.
I really don’t care either way. I liked the story and I liked the cast.. They could have done a lot worse..

ParticipantI never actually saw the movie, but I gathered from the trailers and reviews that Abrahms threw more sex and action scenes into the formula to get more young people in the theaters while downplaying the contemplative and philosophical elements of the series. This is what made Voyager and Enterprise inferior to the previous three shows.
One thing I am curious about: I understand that some sort of time traveling mishap changed the backstory of the original series and created a whole new timeline. Does this mean that the original Star Trek universe has been replaced or is it supposed to still exist in a parallel universe or something?

I grew up with TNG.. and have always considered it my favorite generation (tee hee).
ENGAGE
Honestly though if they could put more sex / action scenes in the original star trek, I’m sure they would have. Captain Kirk was a playa. There weren’t any sex scenes in the new Star Trek movie though other than the Kirk hiding under the bed scene.. which only implied that something happened.
February 22, 2011 at 9:27 am #107558Ephraim
ParticipantI didn’t mean there were more sex scenes so much as there was more sexuality in general. Again, I didn’t see the movie, but I recall the trailers playing up some scantily clad women. It seemed a bit sleazy for Star Trek, closer to a trailer for a teenage comedy than a sci-fi film.

First Contact? That thing had more plot holes than the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones combined. I mean it was ok if you don’t really pay attention but if you apply one iota of thought to the movie it makes so little sense that your brain will start hurting.

Replaced. Probably permanently. ST12 will also be based in the new timeline.
See the problem is that the original timeline has been spent. They can’t create any more TNG-based movies because the last two have been abysmal failures at the box office. The TNG crew just can’t act the parts anymore. The only place where they can safely make movies is the pre-TNG but they can’t really do that without having to tip-toe around the original backstory for the original Star Trek and we know even the slightest slip up will be noticed and boo’d in theaters. The solution? Create an alternate timeline where even if you contradict something from TOS you can write it off as the alternate character making a different decision. I mean as far as giving themselves room to maneuver, it was genious.

ParticipantI agree with Kip that it was a good idea. I think one of the reasons that I like what they did is because I WANT MOAR STAR TREK MOVIES.
PS. I liked the last star trek TNG movie. It would be difficult to create a sequel to it though. I too believed that first contact was crap… even generations was better.
PPS. I think it’s funny that in Star Trek IV: The voyage home the whale lady states how no whale has ever harmed a human being and that Killer Whale killed his trainer last February http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-02-24-seaworld-whale-death_N.htm

The idea of creating a Star Trek reboot has legs to it, but I kind of see it as a betrayl to fans of the old series to say that all those stories they enjoyed never actually happened and are no longer a part of canon. Now if both continuities were still said to exist in some fashion, it would probably be easier to take. Sure it’s nerdy, but it would add a psychological comfort.
All that being said, this new Star Trek universe looks too trendy for me. It’s like they’re trying to hard to be cool and not hard enough to be smart.
February 22, 2011 at 3:04 pm #107572Lemm
ParticipantWell as long as the old Spok lives… you can still say they actually happened.
I seriously doubt he will do another movie though unless Sheldon uses the DNA he got off the napkin to clone him (Big Bang Theory Reference).
February 22, 2011 at 10:07 pm #107576Ephraim
ParticipantHmm. I got a little concerned about the whole ‘alternate reality’ thing (because I’m a great big neeeeeeeeerd) so I decided to do a little research. I found this interview with one of Star Trek 2009’s writers. He said that despite the creation of a new timeline, the old timeline remains intact. It’s not that the old timeline was snuffed out by the new one, but rather that the new one and the old one exist simultaneously. Cool. One of my main concerns was that the creators of this film were saying that all Star Trek stories told before their movie were out of canon. Apparently, they’re not. That’s nice. I can dig the idea of a new universe, as long as respect is payed to the previous.
All the same, I’m not interested in seeing the new movie because I still think it looks dumb.
In Summary:
February 23, 2011 at 12:03 am #107577MasterP
ParticipantRegardless of whether or not the old universe still exists, there will be no new content for it or interaction with it. Replaced or not, it’s just as dead.

If they actually are saying that the timeline still exists, then that might mean they will keep giving references / stuff will come from it. This could be hinting at poor plot planning!
