ParticipantI read everything and I am not scanning. I don’t go back and reference *edited* while I am posting though.
Honestly I see what you are saying, and oh btw I was raised conservative, maybe that is why I still have certain conservative ideals. Yes I would accept a check from the government, I used to care about “earning” it for myself, now I don’t give two *edited*s. Ask me what I would do with the money some time. Does that make me lazy, sure it does, anyone who says differently is a *edited*ing liar. I can’t believe you would sit there and tell me that you wouldn’t accept a check for that money. You see here is the difference you believe that you can apply yourself and gain anything, call me in 5 years or however long it takes you when you do that. I will look forward to that call, it isn’t that I doubt you, but in this economy at our current state of things, nobody is going anywhere, the people who hold the seats of power will continue to. Sure I am mad that I am not rich, I don’t want to “punish” anyone and I hardly think taking a few more dollars out of a 300 million dollar persons wallet is going to hurt them. Because at the end of the day they will still be rich. Yet at the end of my day I will just go farther into debt, is this my fault? No it isn’t. And *edited* you if you say it is. I didn’t make any decisions for our economy over the past 100 years, why do I have to suffer because of poor decisions? You will say oh everyone else is in the same position, yeah that is exactly my *edited*ing point.
I think that is the main point that I just really wish you would agree with me on, you see taxes are killing me, debt is killing me, and I know that like I said just 20k from a millionaire would be like a heaven send to me. I don’t dwell on that, sure I wish for it, but I just keep working day to day, paying off what I can. You related taxing of the wealthy to that you would send Animal Control to my house because I have a dog and you don’t like it, while I can see what you are saying in reality that is nothing like being taxed. Let’s make it realistic, I now have and own over 500,000 dogs, now send animal control and take 20 of them, think that is gonna matter to me? It wouldn’t, I would not care one *edited*ing bit. That is the reality of the situation. You’re example is of singular ownership, your example is much closer to what my family and poor people go through every time taxes come around. You got close to seeing how it is, but in your greedy nature you shined true for what you are, you are more worried about losing one thing. And also you related things of high importance, fiance, wife, dog, things that I personally would never want to give up to money, do you realize what kind of a person that makes you?
I am not hateful or resentful of rich people, get that out of your head right now, what I don’t understand is their greedy nature. OK so you earned all this money and you could set aside MORE THAN ENOUGH to cover you, your family, and at least a generation after that, and I bet even some for a rainy day. So what do you do with the rest of it? Oh you hoard it. Makes perfect sense.
One thing I know that I would do and *edited* you if you say I wouldn’t. I would invest most of my money into intelligent investments, keep a stash to the side that I never touch, for emergencies only. If I made the investments correctly I could live off of just the investments. Everything else I had would be focused into building more investments I would then give the investments to families in need, and tell them to pay it forward. Something like this most rich people could never do, it isn’t in them. They are worried about buying another house, yacht, jet, you name it. But if they did, the difference that it would make would be tremendous. They won’t though because it is a mentality thing, no one would like to see someone else rise to power beside them, well anyone that is surrounded by greed, thinks, breathes, and eats greed.
Rich people can’t see the forest for the money, we could live in a utopia, not everyone would be equal but people would not have to struggle every day just to get by. Pride and greed will kill our world before any other of the 7 sins even show their ugly heads. Thanks rich people, you keep it classy.
PS – I had an epiphany while I wrote this, there are things in life that people can do to gain a living and wealth, really having no limit on it, like your dad he became an entrepreneur and did well and became successful. My career that I want doesn’t involve entrepreneurship, in fact entrepreneurship is one of the few careers that allow you to control your salary, since your salary is everything you make minus expenses for your business. Honestly if you have a good idea it is the best way to go. I want to direct movies, guess what, I can’t do that starting out, I have to work my way through, and I am fine with that, unfortunately due to my current location I have very little freedom to do so. But guess what I could do if I had the money, direct, you see I could buy my own equipment pay my own staff and since I was rich I would have the pull to get into peoples pockets so they would want to sponsor the movie I was making. Once I made one if it did well enough I would be able to continue making movies, I honestly don’t care about being rich, what I do want is to not be tied down by the shackles of debt. That would give me the freedom to pursue my goals, and my debt looks to me like a mountain that I am terrified to climb, but to a rich person is a measly pebble in the road. That is what I think is lacking, I don’t want to hurt the guy making $500,000 per year I feel for him too, I am sure he is worried about making his next payment on his yacht, but I just wish that people could understand the differences that we go through.

ParticipantAlso many of your posts are very insinuating about my support to Obama and calling me a socialist. Listen my ideas for how we get the Nation out of debt may run parallel to the ideas of some socialists, that does not make me a socialist, that makes me a person with ideas that run parallel to socialism. Honestly I haven’t looked at what a socialist is at all, these are ideas from my head based on how I see things.
You called me an Obama supporter somewhere, I am not accusing anyone of changing posts, but I know what I saw. If I saw it wrong then whatever considered it ignored.

What I said was none of what you wanted would happen under Obama, which pretty much implies you to be the exact opposite of an Obama supporter.
From the tone and content of the rest of your reply it looks like you didn’t actually read my reply earlier. It looks like you saw some Great Depression history that didn’t jive with what you thought you knew so you skimmed down until you saw Obama mentioned then raged.

It’s pointless for me to argue if all you are going to do is bash me because you think I support Obama, I am neither a socialist nor a conservative.
If you like high taxes, “big brother” government, and “make everyone equal” government programs then by definition you are either socialist, marxist, or communist. Your posts and ideals are textbook socialism. Go read what socialism means because you are it, you fit the definition almost exactly.
Since you didn’t read my reply in the other post I’ll quote it here:
MasterP said:
While there’s nothing wrong with socialism in theory, in practice it fails miserably every time. Sorry, I mean it just, does.
There’s always going to be an upper class and a lower class. The most successful countries in history are those with a middle class, something that socialist countries generally destroy very quickly. We can switch to socialism, and everyone will be happy for a while, but after the love affair is over you’ll find that those that were the upper class still are and everyone who didn’t measure up is now essentially slave labor. I guess everyone being poor is fairer than the 13-17% we average now, unless you’re in the 83-87% who isn’t.
Sorry to be so mathematical about this but that’s how you’ve got to look at it. There’s always going to be poor people, and there’s always going to be rich people. Your goal in life should be to get as high as you can without stepping on others. If you give all your money away while being poor, you’ll always be poor, and the overall good you do for society will be minimal however if you focus entirely on yourself until you’ve planted your feet in solid financial ground you’ll be in a much better position to actually do some good for the less fortunate. Yes I’m a greedy *edited*, yes I hoard my money, but that means that when I want to give to a good cause I actually have the money to make a difference. Everyone can give $5 to a cause but its the people that give $500 that keep those causes alive.

What I can’t stand for right now is the inability for conservatives to see that the obnoxiously wealth are killing our economy. Do you not realize that defending them makes you look like a complete jack *edited*? Let’s defend the guy who sits on a throne instead of the guy who makes an honest day to day living, YEAH THAT MAKES PERFECT SENSE, GOD I BET THE GUY ON THE THRONE IS PERFECT AND HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG HE DESERVES ALL OF THAT MONEY!What you fail to realize is that the vast majority of the wealthy got it by honest, day to day living. The difference being they targetting their labor into more productive enterprises or simply rose the corporate ladder better. What you’re saying is that since they’re more successful than you are, as a nation, we should punish them with 90% taxes. How is that fair? Who determines what is and is not “wealthy”? What happens when people start thinking that anything above minimum wage should be taxed 90%? Surely you don’t think THAT’S fair…

I didn’t say Mellon’s sole reason for doing the tax cuts was to lower what he paid, I am sure he had many other alternate reasons, I was just pointing out how much he saved in doing so, I am sure that was a pretty big reason for him doing it too though. “Oh hey look I can save about $800,000 dollars just by giving all the wealthy a tax cut, we deserve it we have been spending money in this country for a while.” And so they have, again I cannot deny some of his other reasons, they do make sense.
So again I ask, are you saying Mellon’s primary reason for creating the biggest short-term economic boom in this country’s history was for personal tax savings? Will you not admit that what he did was smart for the economy as a whole and not just for his own wallet?
Bitey said:
So here is the honest to God truth, when the economy is down, we need to tax the *edited* out of the rich. When it is up and we are in peace times, national debt is down, give them a tax cut. I think that is a fair solution for everyone. So you haven’t read anything I’ve posted here. Go re-read my first post which details how and why that policy doesn’t work and gives a historic example of when the exact opposite worked beautifully. I’m not going to waste my time retyping it, it’s not what you want to hear and puts a giant crack in your view of reality so I’m not really expecting you to read it. At least pretend like you did though so you aren’t saying the same things over and over after being proven wrong by your own historic example.

Last I checked you can’t raise tax on the “wealthy” to 90% AND lower them to 25% at the same time. I know the liberal perspective is hard to support with facts and examples in threads like this but at least try posting something constructive. Instead of random pop-shots at opinions, supported by facts, that you don’t like.
I give kudos to Bitey for posting coherent sentences that aren’t entirely made out of talking points. He at least expresses his own opinion and as wrong as I may think, it’s his and his alone. Not identical in every way to that of half the people on TV and in Washington.
I am loling at this entire post, every thing you say is not a counter argument it is simply a dodge, as I was trying to say before there are arguments for it and against it, there are points in history where it has proven to work and where it hasn’t. You can’t quote history to me and then not observe other points of it. I am done with this, instead of trying to find a good alternative all you do is bash what I say and tell me I am wrong no wonder people get annoyed with you. It’s quite an easy discussion about how we can get the nation out of debt, your way has worked in the past and so has mine, I propose an in between and I am wrong? Right… OK sure. Also stop making assumptions about me I read your entire post but unlike you I don’t break apart every single *edited*ing thing you have to say and try to tear it apart. I hear what you are saying and some of it makes sense other parts is straight up garbage, I like how you conveniently ignored the part about you defending the wealthy, anyone who defends the wealthy is a *edited*ing idiot. I don’t care that they got that far honest to goodness working, you know what, they still did it in this country, and now that they can they send jobs to china, oh wait weren’t they supposed to be creating jobs? And if my family has to get by on barely nothing then why can’t we rely on the wealthy to help with that? You’re arguments really are full of holes, stop making excuses for someone who has everything and realize the situation it puts others and how it makes them feel. If everyone did that, we’d live in a different place.
Proof that you can’t talk to a person who isn’t in a position of nothing. You aren’t in it anymore who gives a *edited* if you were at one time, everyones situation is different. I honestly believe that if you sat there and told me that you didn’t want help when your family was hurting you would be lying to my face. I bet even Bill Gates if he was ever poor would wish and hope for support from a rich family, anyone who wasn’t would be lying in my opinion. Do you know how much a measly $20k would do for my family? That is like .20 cents to a person like Bill Gates, $20 bucks to someone like Oprah.
I get it, they “earned” this money, so obviously that entitles them to everything else too, you know what I earn every *edited*ing cent I make, so that entitles me to some bonuses too. One CEOs bonus would keep me in good condition for almost 5 years. Where it would last that CEO about 30 minutes, this is the difference that people live every day, you clearly don’t understand or see that.

By the way, I’ll bet anyone $20 that it doesn’t feel good to give.
Do I need to say anything else?
Also your “history” is quite skewed. Yes as a conservative you would have me believe that the taxing of the rich hurts the economy. This is true when the rich are actually spending money and creating jobs. When the rich do not spend money and are not creating jobs we need a higher tax on the rich to fuel the economy. Instead sending everything to China and other foreign countries to “cutback” on their “debt”.
Industrialist Andrew Mellon led the charge to lower the tax rates on the wealthy in the 1920s. He claimed that doing so would increase overall tax revenues and stimulate the economy. The top rate was eventually cut from 73 percent in 1921 to 25 percent in 1926. Mellon alone saved $800,000 a year in taxes as a result.
Unfortunately, Mellon’s tax cut was a disastrous idea for most Americans. Income was distributed upward, into too few hands. The money was used for speculation in the stock market rather than the creation of jobs. The ultimate result was the Great Depression.
Tax rates were raised to help pay for World War II and they stayed high in the postwar years. From the end of the war until 1962, the top rate was 91 percent. Those tax rates, unthinkably high today, coincided with the longest period of prosperity in U.S. history, the creation of a middle class and substantial public investment in education and infrastructure.
l2history MP….
There are a lot of facts in history about taxes and things, you say to look at the numbers so look at the numbers. The fact is if the rich are taxed higher the economy does better. Now what I will agree with Mr. Mellon about is that having higher tax does encourage the rich to dodge these taxes and look for loopholes. Steve Jobs for example is getting paid $1 a year by Apple for being CEO since his return in ’97. Where he makes his money is in dividends, he holds the biggest share of Disney stocks there is, about 138 million of them and hasn’t sold any. He pulls in about 48 million per year from that, and since this is technically a “Corporate” type of income he only gets taxed about 15%.
My proposal is to find a happy medium, clearly right now it isn’t good enough because the nation is still in debt and we still have people that are obnoxiously wealthy. It’s like we are sitting on a *edited*ing gold mine, but we are all like, “Mmmm, you know what let’s not go into that.”
Bitey
ParticipantTo me, this is the US :

Now that is a harsh image…
Bitey
ParticipantI see what you are saying here, however I still don’t see the issue with taxing the rich heavier, the thing is sure a lot of people give and that is great, but where the money needs to be is with the nation to get it out of debt. I think a top tax of 70% like that article said would be relatively fair as opposed to what it is right now, which is 35%, are you *edited*ing kidding me?
385,000,000 * .35 = 134,750,000. Now that is a lot of money. Now she still has 250,250,000. Still a quarter of a Billion dollars. Ummm, no wonder she buys people cars on her show…. Oh wait she doesn’t pay for that, the network does.
My main point is, yes some people are trying to be charitable, but not everyone is, we still have the insanely rich and the insanely greedy. Unfortunately there needs to be a happy medium.
385,000,000 * .70 = 269,500,000 = 115,500,000. Hmmm still seems insanely wealthy to me. And the nation just gained 100 million more dollars on ONE person. How many middle class people do you have to tax at what percentage to get that amount?
I dunno, the answer seems obvious to me. I think to me it is more about equalizing out the structure of our class system a bit and neutralizing the nation’s debt. If we raised the taxes on the wealthy to my proposed percentage, I think that would be easily attainable, and guess what, the rich would still be rich, but the poor and middle class would not have to carry this country on their shoulders.

Typical liberal responce, “oh he must have had money if he started a company”. Yeah ok, we banked 2 inheritances and lived like paupers for years before he got laid off. Why? Because he saw how his employer spent money and knew it was unsustainable. So yeah, take every penny your parents don’t spend on staying in your house with power and food and put that in the bank. After a couple years you’ll really be surprised just how much even the “poor” in our society squander. About 1/5 of the uninsured in this country make over $60,000/year and what’s sad is they never understand where it all goes.

No offense, but exactly why should I be responsible for someone else’s poor judgement? I’m sure at the time everything was all sunny and great but it’s basically common sense in the investment world to have at least 6 months of living expenses in the bank with around 2 years of expenses being an ideal reserve. Drastically. That’s a 20 year inb4 but it never fails. Also, you do realize that rich people donate to charities and scholarships right, I mean by your definition Bill Gates is like the best guy in the world. The way you people begrudge others for their success and expect and demand they share it… it’s downright arrogant. If I build computers out of wood in my garage and from that create one of the largest computer companies in the world, that’s MY success. You played no part in that success so who are you to take that from me?

I don’t think I deserve *edited* from you, I am ASKING FOR HELP, when the *edited* will you get that? It ain’t as easy as you claim it to be and arrogant text book responses about investment 101 is quite offensive, not everybody took that class. Do you know what car I drove until Christmas last year, it was a 97 Ford Ranger that we got for cheap that barely had working A/C, our TV was older than me by 10 years. Yes we got by and yes we still had something to fall back on, but that was 3 years ago, now things are getting tough because my dad still doesn’t have a job worth *edited*, though his qualifications are through the roof. And no my song and dance will not change, because I am not the kind of person that thinks like you, clearly we have established that fact. I am done posting in this thread, I can’t be mad at you for having a different opinion but ffs man, just because I believe in a world where the rich choose to share there wealth instead of horde it doesn’t make me a liberal. It is the big companies that I am raging about, so if it less than 300 people, that means we have 300 people in the US each making over 1 million dollars a year. Yeah it definitely is ridiculous, but the sad thing is simply by taking down that one person’s salary you can “create new jobs” for 30-50 more people. Simple fact is that no one person should be making that much money, UNLESS they win the lottery heh.. And then it is a one time payment.

However when you have the board and CEO of a company making 600% more than their employees that tells me that they are probably paying their employees about 10/hr.
That would mean the CEO makes 70/hr * 40 hr/wk * 52 wk/yr = 145600/yr, which is actually very modest for a CEO.
Just throwing this out, Jamarcus Russell made $39 million for being a crappy NFL QB and getting cut after 3 seasons. It would take said hypothetical CEO over 300 years to make that much money on his hypothetical salary.
i believe it’s 600% more than their employees combined. hypothetically speaking, your CEO only has one dude employed lol. bring that number up to about 50 and yeah, he makes a *edited*load.
i don’t think all rich people are evil. I know a millionaire, who started a glass/window company from scratch. He did small repair jobs around Houston at first. My aunt directs an office management company which manages a couple office buildings downtown. After the hurricane a few years back (Ike i think), he placed a bid on a million dollar job (20 story building, replaced all windows with hurricane resistant ones) and landed it. Made his first million. He is definitely a hard working man, and deserves every penny, and is extremely gracious too. pays all his workers graciously, and full benefits. He even rents them places to stay when they are *edited* out of luck (one of his employees got thrown out by his wife lol). Another employee had 4 DWI’s and he bought the best lawyer for him and got them all whiped from history. He’s an extremely loyal, rich, gracious man. I’m pretty sure there are more guys like him, but most richies aren’t that cool.
Yeah I don’t think rich people are evil, but most need to be more generous with their money, just flat out. Otherwise they are a greedy *edited*er, there is no nice way to put it. I realize that I am in the completely wrong thread and sorry for screwing up the OP, but I had to get this off my chest.
Why is it OK for the CEO to make 600% more than the employee? Why is that necessary?
Also now multiply that by every employee they have, then you have the right number. Not to mention the bonuses and freeby things that CEOs get for being….. a CEO…. again the whole idea that they deserve something better? I just don’t get it.
Here is an average CEOs pay for 2009 :
Salary $1,041,012
Bonus $203,714
Stock Awards $2,630,574
Option Awards $2,284,595
Non-Equity Incentive Plan Compensation $1,790,703
Pension and Deferred Compensation Earnings $1,060,867
All Other Compensation $235,232
Total $9,246,697
It looks like the average percentage came down in 2008 and is hanging out around 319, not sure what it is today or was in 2009.
It is stuff like this:
The average CEO pay in North Carolina is $ 3,679,332.
The average annual income of all occupations in North Carolina in 2008 was $ 38,230.
The unemployment rate at the end of March in North Carolina was 11.1%.
If you down cut a CEO making about that much money so they make $1,500,000 instead, you just opened up about 55 more jobs for people making $38,000, I mean my God! Imagine what that would do for the economy and unemployment rate.
If you can justify for me why one man ever deserves to sit at the top and make that much money I will shut up. As far as I can tell though we have a country of kings and peasants, I thought we left the monarchy… Instead now we just have hundreds of little kingdoms for singular men/women.

ParticipantFor the record, almost nothing I said had anything to do with this, I was just raging on the fact of rich people getting richer.
Glad the lucky few have it so easy. If he had enough money to start his own company than he wasn’t in any position to complain. We have to work every day to not have everything we own torn out from under us, be in that position and then say, “Oh no you just work your *edited* off and then everything is fine”. Bull*edited* again, you’re family is not mine, is not anyone elses. I am happy that your dad was able to have the know how, will power, e-peen size, whatever, to start his own company and get something done. Six years ago my Dad still had a job didn’t have to worry about *edited* and the economy was not in the state it currently is in. Defend rich people all you want, but until I see CEOs that make 600% more than their employees working on the front lines I don’t give two *edited*s about them.
I honestly don’t think we live in a country anymore where you can “Work your *edited* off and be fine”. I work my *edited* off for 10/hr too because I have no choice, just because I don’t get to control my salary doesn’t mean I am working any less hard than your dad did 6 years ago. What he probably had that both I and my father lack was a reserve of money, and the knowledge of something to put it into to create his own business. I don’t know if your Dad is a greedy*edited*, how many houses does he have, how many vacations does he take, how many things does he own that are considered luxuries? Answer these questions and you will have your answer. Hit me with the classic republican response of he made it so he can do what he wants with it and I will say, yeah point proven he is a greedy *edited*. Because what I would want to do with my wealth is make sure I am taken care of, I don’t need a lot. Notice I said need, I made spoil myself a bit but everything else I had would go into charities, scholarships, things like this. Your Dad might do that and that is great if he does, but one guy doing it doesn’t make a difference.
I don’t blame rich people for high student loans, I also don’t blame rich people or the banks for the price of going to college, it obviously is not their fault. However when you have the board and CEO of a company making 600% more than their employees that tells me that they are probably paying their employees about 10/hr. Why, is that? What did the CEO do to gain that? Oh he created jobs you say? So why is America in it’s highest state of unemployment since the depression, but CEOs continue to get richer? Why do banks like Bank of America receive money from the American people and then go out and BUY *edited* THEY DON’t *edited*ING NEED AND PAY THEIR CEOs MORE *edited*ING MONEY! This is what I rage about. So yes I can blame the rich people and the banks for some things, and these are the things I blame them for.

ParticipantI don’t think all the player’s have played their hands yet, to be quite honest.
If it is just as you say you are right it sucks, but I still don’t think all the cards are on the table yet.

ParticipantYup it’s time to stand up, I’ve sat back quietly for too long. I don’t dream of being on of those rich *edited*ers, I know that I never will be because it isn’t in me to be a greedy *edited* bag.

Something to do with the wealthy spending their money in the US economy, creating jobs, forming companies, that sort of thing.
BULL*edited*!
Every time someone says this a goose lays a golden egg that some rich *edited*er eats for breakfast. Bring me the small business owners who are creating jobs, *edited* the CEO wealthy *edited*es who are making 600% more than their employees, it used to be maybe 60% which is more understandable, I didn’t vote for Obama FYI, and like I said “IF THIS WORKS” thing bring it on, I don’t know what it is that will fix our broken system, if you don’t think this is it that is fine that is your opinion. But I think we can at least agree on something needs to be done, the 1 % of America that has houses built out of the American dollar need to give more to the country that they built their wealth in, stop riding the back of the poor and middle class.
Rich people are greedy as *edited*, it is a curse, my Uncle who used to be a CEO and is a millionaire still, retired now, has houses all over the *edited*ing planet, yet he is worried because his wife is going to have to pay $750 for insurance. Where my parents together with my dad’s 10$/hr job and my Mom barely making enough to hold up the house will have to pay over $1500.
As Warren Buffet said, you have to *edited*ing take it from Rich people because they are not going to give it up. I don’t think people should have hand outs, I also don’t think that people should have to barely make it, that student’s trying to start a new life should start with $50-$100k in debt from student loans, it is wrong, 50 years ago no one had student loans. I don’t understand why you are fighting for a broken system, I may not agree with everything that Obama and the Democrats want to do, but there are a few things that I do.

ParticipantAnything that takes the money out of the obnoxiously wealthy people’s hands is just fine by me, I am sick and tired of the rich getting richer, the poor suffering, and the middle class becoming non existent. If changing that means socialism then *edited*ing bring it on.

ParticipantI think having people to talk to regardless of their medical efficiency on the subject is a must, and I bet any doctor would tell you that. Why do you think there are support groups? Just saying…

ParticipantStress is definitely a leading cause for depression, especially when you are like us students who have a heaping loan hanging over their head. Worst way to try and start life…. Doesn’t mean it isn’t doable though.
