ParticipantSo I would like a next gen console system for my birthday in May. The main reason for getting it is the next year arrival of Final Fantasy 13. So naturally I wanted a PS3, since it had been an exclusive Brand for Playstation. However, I have since learned that FFxiii will be released for both PS3 and 360.
So then, which console to get? What are some pros and cons about each?
Which do you prefer and why?
For me: I like the rpgs on consoles. I will also be getting RockBand2, but that is for either system as well (my wife got addicted to it at a friends house). I don’t know how I feel about online console playing – but I have never done it, so I am not on either side of that.
Also, there are harddrives for both consoles, is there an advantage to these (sizes?) and what can go one them?
Please help me out – I got some time to think about it, so that is good.
Thanks everyone, in advance.

ParticipantGet a 360. There aren’t hardly any good PS exclusives anymore and IMO the Xbox exclusives are just as good.
I can’t believe Sony would give up their best selling exclusive like that. Stupid, IMO. Then again, they probably just want to sell the game and having it a PS3 exclusive would seriously hurt sales.

ParticipantI agree with Master P. You’ll do better with a 360 just for the simple fact that there is a wide variety of good games for the console. As far as harddrives go it doesn’t really matter what size you get. The only reason you would need a bigger sized harddrive for the console would be for the DLC (downloadable content) you can get from Xbox Live or downloading a game to the box itself for faster load times (not really a noticeable difference).

ParticipantHonestly, I would have to say a PS3 would be a better choice. Why? Well for one if you want to try online gaming its free. Secondly, a lot of the good 360 are on the PS3 as well (with the exception of Gears of War II and Fable II which are good). And finally, the system actually does have some good console exclusives. LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 1 and 2, Killzone 2(will be coming out in Feb.), and MGS4 just to name a few. Another plus is the fact that you are buying a blue ray player and you can upgrade the hardrive on the PS3 easily. So in my opinion, the PS3 is the way to go.

Technically if you know how to transfer the OS you don’t have to bother with Microsofts proprietary harddrives since the harddrives that the Xbox uses are just a regular laptop harddrive. You could save a lot of money doing it this way but it voids the warranty that Microsoft gives the Xbox.
Back to the PS3 vs. 360 thing now. Here is a list of games that I don’t think are on the PS3 that the Xbox has.
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Halo 3
The Last Remnant
Fable II
Ninja Gaiden II
Lost Odyssey
Mass Effect
Left 4 Dead
That’s all I could think of off the top of my head. All the games mention here are worthy of checking out.
January 19, 2009 at 5:11 am #68832FTE Kaz-Ka
ParticipantActually I think The Last Remnant and Ninja Gaiden are on the PS3. And as far as Gears of War 1 and 2 and Fable 2 go, yea, if you get a 360 Id check those out. But from what Ive heard from most die hard Halo fans, Halo 3 is a disappointment. If your looking for a bad *edited* FPS, get a PS3 and buy Resistance 2. If you get a PS3 you should also pick up Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, its a really good game.

ParticipantFrom what I’m reading, it appears that the most defining factor among those commenting is the game selection.
I gather in terms of performance, graphics, controllers, noise, size – there isn’t much difference?
And thank you all for your help so far.

At the rate it’s going I imagine they won’t use the full potential until it’s about too late to make a difference in this generation of consoles, which is a shame because it’s the same mistake that Nintendo has made on every console since the SNES. You’d think they would have learned by now.

You’d think they would have learned by now.As far as the PS3 standing up to this claim you are dead wrong. The only reason that its sales are behind the 360 is its price tag, and even now Sony is catching up. And as far as I’m concerned, they are pushing the systems performance (have you not seen MGS4 running? It would take about 10 Xbox 360 disks to run that one game alone. So you believe Sony isn’t pushing its systems potential? Come on MasterP
)Lets just be completely honest here people it comes down to which game series you like the most and how much you are willing to pay for the system, online gaming, controllers, and all that good stuff. To put it simply, if you like FPSs and you do not want to spend alot of money, buy a 360. The console isn’t not bad but then again its not the greatest console out there with its *edited* DPad and RRoD . If money isnt a factor and you want a system that has a good mix of everything, get a PS3. And again it does have some good exclusives but this does come at a price because the system is pretty expensive.

)I didn’t say anything with regards to sales as the pricetag has been the only thing that’s hurt the PS3 so far.
I was referring to caping out the system to the point where you actually have a noticably lower framerate during certain parts of the game. The SNES had the ability to create full 3-D environments but they never marketed it because the game developers didn’t get to that point until about a year before the N64’s release. They did the same thing with the N64 (Perfect Dark) and Gamecube (3rd PoP, Zelda TP) as some of the later games from both systems were noticibly better than earlier ones.
As far the PS3 goes, no I haven’t seen anything close to the hype that was made about it’s abilities. Yes MGS4 is impressive but this thing was supposed to be more powerful than many PCs conbined, and so far I just haven’t seen it with their games. Hardware wise, yes it’s painfully obvious as some rich mothers in universities up north hook PS3s together to make supercomputers. Software wise though they’re still on par with PC and *most of their games aren’t much better than XBOX360.
IMO, look at the games you like and buy the system accordinly. I like Nintendo’s games (not lately though) so I bought a Wii, those who were really into the Halo series got an XBOX360 and those who liked the FF and Metal Gear series got PS3s. Just buy the system you think you’ll enjoy more, not with how powerful it’s hardware is. If people cared only about raw power the Wii wouldn’t have outsold both of its rivals like it has.
January 19, 2009 at 3:29 pm #68867FTE Kaz-Ka
ParticipantYea, I agree with that last statement MP.
January 19, 2009 at 4:10 pm #68875peanut
ParticipantI thank you for your responses. Unfortunately the FF series is not a current draw for a console, since ff13, which is yet to be released, will be the 1st next-gen final fantasy game. So that was what prompted this discussion. however, I am taking all points to heart and under consideration.
It is apparent that this is not a simple this one or that one, kind of decision. And apparently no one has heard of any updates to either system that would help this decision along.
Again, thank you.

ParticipantI know that the reason the PS3s software is not being used correctly is not Sony’s fault that is game developers fault. What is Sony’s fault is making the programming of games so complex, it was the same with the PS2, what makes the XBOX so easy is that it IS a computer, so game developers don’t have to do much changing/porting to develop/program/design a game. Just a little info on the two systems and how they work.

any special things you can do with the hard drive? can you link the xbox HD to a PC?
can you rip dvd movies, and CD music onto it and have it playback w/o putting the cd/dvd’s back in?
what are some of the non-gaming more practical fetchers of each system?

Yes the Xbox 360 can be used as a home entertainment system. I don’t know about the other things you asked about.

I know that the Xbox 360 now allows you to attach your netflix account to it and enables you to download movies from netflix straight to your Xbox.

Well if you rip movies and convert them to MP4, DIVX, or some other format i cant remember off the top of my head, you can watch videos without the DVD on the PS3. You can also put MP3s on the PS3. Also, you can put LYNX on the system if you are willing to partition the hardrive. It also has a built in internet browser. You can also buy or even rent movies and TV shows on the Playstation Network. Im pretty sure their are more things that aren’t gaming based with the PS3. If your interested in that though, you should probably talk to josrocket.
January 20, 2009 at 9:40 am #68943Oh Malley
ParticipantYou can rip CD’s onto a 360 hard drive and actually play the music while playing a game, or even replace the soundtrack with your own music in some games.
You can link your Xbox with the PC for entertainment purposes, meaning you can watch videos, listen to music, browse through pictures that are on your PC with the help of either the latest WMP or Zune’s software.
And with the recent partnership with Netflix, you can instantly stream movies from Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” selection onto your 360.
As far as the system itself, the system generally runs fairly quiet, unless it starts to overheat. Just make sure the system is well ventilated.
The controllers, I feel, are ideal for FPS’s due to the off-axis analog sticks. They’re very durable and you shouldn’t have to worry about buttons or sticks failing until you’ve had them for more than a year of heavy use.
From what I understand, although the PS has free online play, Xbox Live is better. Either better experience, better support, or whatever else. I’m simply going off of hearsay testimony. You have multiple options with Xbox Live. You can get a free Silver account, which will give you access to online play to some games, post and view in Leaderboards, as well as have a full friend’s list and be able to send messages and chat with friends on-line. With the Gold account, you’ll have unlimited on-line play and access to more content. And the price for a gold account is constantly getting cheaper and cheaper it seems. Wal-mart recently had the 13-month Gold account cards for $30. Or you can easily get the start-up kit for $70, which includes the 1-year (or 13 months, can’t remember which), a headset, the messenger kit, and a copy of Project Gotham Racing 4.
As far as game selection goes, it seems the 360 has a much larger selection and a larger variety of games. If it comes down to a dead even tie before this point, then the exclusives or just scope of selection for each system should be the deciding factor. Personally, I have no interest in any of the PS3 exclusives or any of its extra bells and whistles, so that’s why getting a PS3 is simply out of the question for me. However, I cannot say the same for you.

No there really isnt a diffrence when it comes to this….the diffrences are in the the features, hell i will names some that ps3 can do, partition the HDD so you can have ps3 OS and Linux, every flavor of surround sound known to man including the new Dolby digital True HD and that HD DTS one, video, photo, and audio editing, printer drivers, Remote access, supports every kind of audio and video format there is, I can get on AIM…….omg i could go on forever but i can if peanut wants me to. but to make things short — It does anything a PC and an xbox can do…
In the long run you will be you and your wallet will be happier with the ps3….ps3 is indeed cheeper…everything that you have to buy for xbox is free on ps3. ps3 comes with a built in wireless card, blueray player, and online gameing is free, but im tired of typeing now if you want to know more let me know

I can go toss a word processor on it, plug a keyboard up, and type away if I wanted, or stream video, or play music, or host an FTP or webserver from it. You could load a 1TB hard drive up with movies and music and the Wii would play from it without any issues. Hell with a 3rd party add-on you could hook the Gamecube up to a computer and use it as a media center or use a custom gamedisc and stream video to it over a network. That whole concept is nothing new and isn’t an exclusive to one brand or another. The PS3 can’t do anything *useful* that the others can’t. And by useful I mean how the hell is remotely accessing a game console helpful? Compared to the PC I can’t imagine why you’d pick it to remote into at all.
My point was, if the PS3 is so great a system and is the wave of the future, why isn’t it blowing us away after 2 years? If you take away MGS4 it’s barely been above par when compared to XBOX360 and PC. I’ve heard the same “it’s futureproof”, “we’ve got tons of SUPER AWESOME exclusives coming SOON”, and “it’s so much better than everything else” for almost 4 years now. The excuse around launch date was that “programming for the cell processor is hard and no one know hows yet but just wait it’ll be great in a year”. Well, we’re there. It’s about that time where you put up or shut up because right now both of your competitors have outsole you 2:1, the Wii almost 3:1. Hell the Wii sold more last November and December than the PS3 sold for the entirety of 2008. I don’t know how much longer the fanboys are willing to wait, but anyone who is waiting for a super exclusive to make the purchase *immediately* worthwhile isn’t going to wait forever. I almost bought one on release week but had a nagging feeling that there was too much hype for it to be worth getting, so far I can’t say I’m disappointed with my decision.
Also, a 50GB game really doesn’t mean anything. All that says is that it’s either got a insane amount of cinematics or really poor encoding on the video and audio. From what I hear, there’s about as many cutscenes as there are action scenes and when you take a 1GB game with nothing but action and compare it to a 50GB game with some action and tons of boring cinematics I can tell you with a fair degree of certainty which one real gamers are going to want. Back in the golden age of PC gaming there was a game called Klingon Academy, a fairly fast paced space-based (obviously) flight sim that came on a whopping 6 CDs. Most games at the time barely used 200MB but this *edited* thing took up 100% of 6 CDs. The catch is that if you removed the cinematics it was about 300MB big. The cinematics weren’t a deal breaker because you could hit that nifty ESC key and go back to venting people into space but it’s a concept I haven’t seen since in PC gaming. Most gamers really don’t care who loves who or wants to kill who, they just want to sit down and shoot the *edited* out of something and putting delays between the shooting doesn’t warrant medals or acolades. If a PC game pulled a stunt like that, I certainly wouldn’t be bragging about it.

im not even gonna go into all the things that are wrong with what you said…i dont have time for this….if you want to be stupid then so be it…and do some research before you start explaining why things are the way they are…like MGS4 and everything else…why do you argue things you dont understand and know absolutly nothing about.
