SpectatorSo Apple is giving away a free case that “fixes” their reception issues and claims that holding the phone “incorrectly” also affects the reception on Samsung, RIM (blackberry), and HTC phones. None other phone designer (to my knowledge) has ever had a problem even remotely close to what the iPhone4 has.
Anyone else want to inb4 a massive set of lawsuits from these companies?

Spectatorthe best part of that press conference was the guy during the q&a session saying “um I can’t get my blackberry to drop signal like that. Can you show me how?”
*edited*ING WIN.

SpectatorIt’s cold in here.
Seriously though, I love my Droid X.

SpectatorThat’s because there’s never been a phone or smartphone to have this kind of problem. I tried covering my LG enV Touch on Verizon with my hand and got it to lose 1X but it still had 3 bars of EVDO which means no dropped call. Even then, I had to use both hands to cover enough of it to make a difference, something you won’t do while talking. Even my dad’s 4 year old POS HTC that get’s terrible ATT reception to start with doesn’t drop calls when you palm the back.
A guy my dad works with got an iPhone4 on release day and the Apple Store told him that he had to buy a case and a new SIM card to fix the reception problems. Being a typical Apple fan, he obeyed and is still dropping calls like crazy. This case thing is just a quick and cheap way to make people think their problems aren’t related to the phone; it doesn’t actually solve any problems.
Phones are typically designed around the concept that they WON’T lose their network connection while being used. Apple cared more about sleek, pretty, light, and iPhoneish than they did actual functionality and usefuness and I hope it’s a mindset they adopt in their PC engineering.
July 17, 2010 at 2:57 pm #103246Bitey
SpectatorIt won’t be, the people over the iPhone department don’t even talk to the people in the computer department, like not joking, it is against Apple Policy for them to speak at all about what they are doing.

SpectatorIt seems to me that a company that usually makes quality peripherals would have tested holding the phone in your hand before releasing it.
July 17, 2010 at 5:18 pm #103248Bitey
SpectatorI say to myself all the time, “It seems they would have tested this more before releasing it”, with any Apple product.
July 17, 2010 at 5:43 pm #103249Nickname
Spectatoractually the case does help because it keeps you from being able to bridge that gap in the antenna which causes a lot of the problems.
but yeah way for apple to try to blame everyone else when nobody else has this problem.

And yet Apple has the best customer satisfaction ratings of all the manufacturers…
Idk how they do it but Apple could release the buggiest OS on the most horribly designed PC of all time and fanboys would still buy it in droves. That’s why whenever someone says they prefer Apples I automatically assume they know absolutely nothing about computers or the internet. 99% of the time you’ll be making a correct assumption, even when the person works in IT.

Can you think of the last time you saw a phone that not only had the antenna on the outside of the phone but also left that antenna completely uninsulated? It doesn’t take much to prevent human skin from acting as a conductor, maybe half a cent or so.
As someone who’s actually designed and built a high-frequency antenna I can tell you that this sort of thing is something any engineer should refuse to let our of their lab. I’m curious to see if it’s actually safe to use for hours on end with it held to your face.

Unfortunately no. The average Mac fanboy is already brainless. Wait, maybe they think eating your brains gives them brains.
Oh crap…

This is because the surveys are skewed, trust me…. I know.

SpectatorI will say I do drop calls on my black berry from time to time but not because of a design flaw or rather I dont think thats why anyways. I love that when I drive right along the border (there is a back up free way) I get no service and I literally go like 5 feet away and all of a sudden I get signal again.
July 18, 2010 at 3:49 am #103263MasterP
SpectatorI mean ATT is bad to drop calls with 3+ bars. Their cell partitioning is terrible. Tbh, I think I could have designed a better system than they use, and I dropped my wireless communication class. It’s almost like their system is incapable of seamlessly handshaking clients between towers if the receiving tower is anywhere capacity.
I have to say though, I’ve had maybe 30 dropped calls in 6 years with Verizon, with 4 of those being in the mountains where reception is poor at best and nonexistant on anyone but Verizon and ATT.
One problem I’ve noticed with ATT is that it doesn’t actually register it as a dropped call. I can be talking to my dad with 4 bars and my phone will go back the home screen, I redial him and he’s like “wtf it didn’t even say I lost you”. Not registering their dropped call as a dropped might be why they claim to have the fewest dropped calls.

SpectatorThat’s a good point, and you’re probably right on that.

SpectatorAll I know, is that with AT&T I used to have calls dropped all the time due to half of Tech being in a dead zone and when I switched to Verizon I can be in a *edited* bunker and still have 3G.
My friend picked up the Iphone4 when it first came out and he blames all dropped calls on the carrier not the phone lulz.

SpectatorBased off of this, I think I’ll get a blackberry. Ugh, I’ve come to a point when I actually need a phone with apps, email, & a tiny keyboard. I heard the Droid has problems involving battery life

Spectatorif you use verizon, get the htc incredible or droid x or even the regular droid. if you u use sprint, get the htc evo. android is currently the 2nd best mobile OS (behind iOS) but it is improving very rapidly and actually is an open platform so your phone will only improve over time.

I hate motorola with a passion, but how’s HTC? If the battery’s good & I don’t have to pay extra to write emails that would be fine & sassy.

windows mobile is not in the game right now. windows phone 7 will be coming out in a couple of months and its supposed to be pretty good (we will see); windows mobile 6.5 is garbage and irrelevant.
oh and idk about how good battery life is from htc but all smartphones have pretty *edited*ty battery life.

They haven’t figured out how to put unused apps to sleep or auto exit or even have a pop up asking if you want to exit after a certain time of unuse?

To my knowledge, Windows Mobile was the first phone OS that let you install any app you wanted without having to go through a central store or a carrier’s app service. Even with the Android, you still have to use their market service to get even the free applications.
You can’t tell me that being able to simply download any app, from any source, and install it without a nanny carrier service or app marketplace as a gatekeeper is a bad thing. It’s still the only TRUE freedom-oriented OS in the phone market, and that’s pretty bad coming from Microsoft and all.
And yes, all smartphones have terrible battery life. In fact the new HTC droids have some of the worse battery life for a “new” phone I’ve ever seen. It’s not really about multiple applications running at once, it’s partly because they have to make the phones more powerful to support the heavier and more feature filled OS’s. Most of the battery issues are because people sit on the internet, IM, or GPS features all day long and constant use of a data or wireless network will drain batteries on even the most basic phone OS’s.
Phone manufacturers need to put larger or higher density batteries in their phones and start funding future technologies like nuclear batteries because this problem is only going to get worse as time goes on.

um you can sideload android apps. plus the online marketplace has tons of free apps. windows mobile doesnt even have a marketplace…
and there is a reason that no new windows mobile phones have come out for the past 16 months. I mean it was good back when it was new and relevant but the current version out (6.5) is soooooooo far behind every other OS out there and 7.0 is a completely new monster, where you lose that ability to sideload apps that you were talking about, and also it lacks multitasking which even apple does now. Sorry but MS has some serious work to do in order to get back in the smartphone market.
July 20, 2010 at 4:49 pm #103376Duendes
SpectatorPersonally, I’d rather have to download an app through a gatekeeper. I’d prefer to NOT reformat my cell phone thank you very much. I just want a phone that does email, can download apps, has a friggin battery life & is something Verizon sells. Basically something that’s meant to get *edited* done.
