ParticipantAight, some folks have objected to this in the past with really *edited*ty arguments.
I’m hoping after Liam gets his admin mod up and the other stuff we are doing and getting the MOTD fixed that we can tackle this next.
Zblock can help to enforce rates as far as I understand plus it looks some of the minor overlooked cvars
We can do sv_pure 1 instead of sv_pure 2 which would allow us to make a white list that our regulars can request for their skins to be added to. Until they get em added it won’t keep people out of the server, only reverting their skins to standard while they are in our server unless their skin has been added to the white list file. Sv_pure 2 is what most people think of when they think of pure modes, that is the mode used for league matches and the like and has no option for a white list. It strictly uses the standard stuff for matches. We wouldn’t be having that, instead we would be cutting down on the folks who want to come in here and hack to look impressive.

ParticipantThe server already enforces rates, we don’t need zBlock to enforce it for us.
sv_pure is fine, I’ve already made the argument for it, but you cannot made exemptions to every single skin there is out there. People who have never played on our server and use really obscured skins can come in and then get kicked due to sv_pure and then will never want to play on our server again, which isn’t what we’re about. sv_pure though can allow for non-default skins all-around while still being enabled. You just have to configure sv_pure correctly when writing the whitelist, such as:
materials\models\player\... allow_from_disk sounds\... from_steam models\MyMod\... allow_from_disk+check_crc materials\MyMod\Customizable\*.* allow_from_disk
Etc.
October 7, 2007 at 3:05 am #27948Brian
ParticipantI’m pretty sure it will allow people in the server and just temporarily change their skins instead of kicking them. That’s what happens to mistern and socal and others on my team who join up on a match server.
We are having an error on map downloads can you check the topic I pinned and see if you know anything about why people are getting missing map errors.
October 7, 2007 at 3:24 am #27949Fascist Flakes (Jagr)
ParticipantIf we add:
materials\models\player\... allow_from_disk models\player\... allow_from_disk
Then it will allow players to load all of their models, skins, etc without a problem, yes.
But if we’re automatically allowing people to use their models, sprays, etc then what’s the point of using sv_pure? Sv_pure is there to enforce people to use default models, skins, sprays, etc to prevent people from using large models, etc and find where people are easier. Sv_pure does nothing that we already are doing, and may in turn cause more server load.
Also, the only problem I could possibly see with the download server is that with the server cvar’s. Somewhere in the config it probably is set to disallow people to join if their map is not the same as the map we have on our server. So instead of downloading and replacing the old map with the current/new map, people are automatically kicked. Find that setting/cvar and I’m pretty sure it’ll solve the problem.

ParticipantNo, I’m wanting Zblock so we can get rid of the people who are using transparent map textures. It will force those which really shouldn’t be any different.
On the map error, they are getting em on map that don’t have updates to them, strike, season, villa, crane, those are all new maps they are downloading for the first time and once they are done downloadng em in game they are all getting an error saying missing map, yet if they download them from the topic I pinned they have no problem getting in.
October 7, 2007 at 1:03 pm #27961Fascist Flakes (Jagr)
ParticipantIf people’s maps vary from the maps on our server, it kicks them. How would they have transparent textures if their map differs from ours? If they can still join for whatever reason, sv_pure would be able to filter those people out instead of using zBlock.
October 7, 2007 at 10:41 pm #27991Kuros
ParticipantThe answer is still no. We are a pub server not a competition server. If your admins are too dumb to catch people exploiting with skins etc, then we need some new admins.
October 8, 2007 at 12:37 am #27997Outie5000
ParticipantIf you suspect someone of using spiked models it’s not a big deal. And who does that anymore? usually people that use giant player models do so because they look neat (bender cs models anyone?) or what not. I dont think it’s realy that big of an issue.
October 8, 2007 at 12:53 am #27999Brian
Participant/Sigh, I’m talking about transparent textures, Colored player models for easier identification adn things like that, it’s nonsensical to ignore it when we could easily do something about it. Any intelligent individual with transparent textures can easily make himself next to impossible to catch, all he has to do is look with the crosshair somewhere else while keeping what he is looking for in his periphial vision. Too dumb that we need new admins? Right, because the fact I’m trying to do something that would help out is idiotic.
One point I’d like to make, we don’t have to have zblock to have sv_pure 1.
Now yall say rates are enforced, I took this pic like two days ago, are their rates actually different from what is shown there?
October 8, 2007 at 1:24 am #28001Liam
ParticipantYes. ma_rates looks at the client-side variables. The server actually forces them to have a minimum on rate, cl_cmdrate, and cl_updaterate. I believe its 20000/60/60.
October 8, 2007 at 2:30 am #28004Fascist Flakes (Jagr)
ParticipantThe rates are enforced at 45/45 supposedly now (straight from Kuros’s mouth).
Brian, go and try to change your rates in game to default and then go back and change them back, read what pops-up under the text into the box, which will tell you what they are currently set to. That’ll tell you the rate settings that it is at. Ma_rates doesn’t work anymore.
By the way:
LOL ACE MATCH SERVER
October 8, 2007 at 3:21 am #28006Brian
ParticipantI don’t see anything lol worthy about joining their server so they can show me how they figured out how to get to the ninja hole at A on de_contra with only two people through legit means, additionally that’s my friends tab, ellys a nice person irl, I don’t see any reason to put the game before something like that
Anyways, this pic shows what the rates are forced to now, couldn’t we at least force them to the same thing please? 81 is not bad, nor is 66, either of those two is fine, 81-40 not so much, kind of an imbalance I believe, in fact it looks like Kuros may be onto something when he says “reg more ffs” because more packets are coming from them than are being sent to them.
October 8, 2007 at 12:33 pm #28023Kuros
ParticipantFirst of all, I would like to say that ma_rates is broken, something I’ve said 10,000 times before. Second, the client (I do believe) chooses their own optimized rates based on connection to the server. So long as they meet my server set minimums of 45/45, they can be whatever up to 101. I attempted to initially set the rates at 75/75 but this proved a bit overkill on those that were pushing the then 250 ping limit. An increase in rates will also increase your ping as some of you may or may not know. I believe that the 45/45 rates have INCREASED registry compared to what they were before I set those variables. This fight has been fought before and both Adam and myself have deemed the addons unnecessary server overhead. Unfortunately, I can’t control interp on the server side. You are still going to get shot beside the wall even though you managed to get behind it. You’re just going to have to yell at people for that one.

October 8, 2007 at 3:22 pm #28040Fascist Flakes (Jagr)
ParticipantIndeed, and most skins/models that change a person to a certain color, or change the transparency of a wall, are considered hacks. Sure they’re harder to spot but they’re still catchable.

ParticipantAight, I concede, no zblock or sv_pure, I do however want turbo physics turned off(we can still stack the cabinets in office with a nade and some rifle fire, plus with turbo physics turned off the server’s performance will run way better, shots will reg way better cus tics wont be taken up calculating all them *edited* cabinets and everyone will get an fps boost on each map. Also the min rates updated to 66/66, that way if it forces some folks 81/66 there won’t be such a disparity and poor hit registration on them as there could theoretically be when it forces someones rates to 81/45.
October 8, 2007 at 6:02 pm #28061Kuros
ParticipantTurbophysics actually makes the server run faster. We tested it both ways (gxti and myself). I tried 75/75 and 66/66 before settling on 45. Just an FYI.
October 9, 2007 at 1:06 am #28072Outie5000
Participantclient rates are really dependant on their connection and machine. I’ve always told people to match their update and cmd to their average fps and that typically gives them a pretty good showing.
does pure 1 enforce high interps? shouldnt they all be set at .1?
October 9, 2007 at 9:26 am #28084
Adam FaulknerParticipantWe have always allowed custom skins at our lans and such. Nodice has a hard drive FULL of skins for all types of hl mod games. I dont see why we should force it on clients.
Dont force client rates. Your only going to *edited* tweakers who pay the extra money for the good connection
If you guys want to lower the pings and speed the performance of the CSS server up there are other ways that work 10x better than ingame stuff.
I know you may think this is stupid, but if you spin up a ut2004 server on its default port and wait 5 mins you will see a ping difference on every server that is HL mod drivengame, I know it works on CS 1.6 which is why I kept UT2004 running even if nobody played.

Participant
the main jist of my argument was aimed at walls, not peoples guns, if we were to us sv_pure 1 we could easily allow custom skins and stuff. I was in no way trying to do away with people’s ability to do that. Do we allow transparent walls at the lans? And I don’t see how forcing clients rates up a little bit would hurt those who have better connections period. :/
October 9, 2007 at 12:32 pm #28093Outie5000
Participanti might be wrong, but i thought if your textures differed from the servers in any hl game you’d get an error messege or purple/black checkerboarded.
October 9, 2007 at 12:35 pm #28094Liam
Participantthe purple/black checkerboard is nothing but a video memory glitch in direct3d. Restarting your game will almost always fix that.

Participanti get purple all the time when i tab out of if i get aim popups… and by aim pop ups i mean porn pop ups and by popups i mean ____
October 10, 2007 at 12:49 am #28134Outie5000
Participanti used to get it all the time on certain maps in dods, it was map and wall specific. and lots of time it was with shiny things too. havent really had any problems lately though.

Interesting…
AXN was complaining to me yesterday that he was lagging after his reformat. Well, looks like he has his rates all wrong
