so i went to an auction today and had a blast and ended up walking away 300 dollars poorer, but the main attraction of what i got was a 50 dollar iMac G4 Lamp Computer

instead of having a Mac OS on it is has an OS called Yellow Dog Linux which basically….

    a) has any1 every used Yellow Dog

    B) is it ne good?

    c) i would also need boot help if at all familiar.

if not i guess ill hit the forums :/

From a quick google I can guess that yellow dog is the poor man’s linux. Apparently it’s only designed to work on IBM processors, none of which have ever been very good in computers. Since it only works on the G4 and PS3 I can hazard a guess you probably won’t be getting the upper tier of support when you ask for help…

Talk to Nickname, he’s been where you are with old Macs and has come out a winrar.

burn an ubuntu disk designed for powerpc processors: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads

While the computer is booting up, hold down the alt/option button on the keyboard for the boot menu (or you can hold the letter c to just boot from CD)

I’ve definitely run YDL. and I know a bit about yaboot – it’s nowhere near as friendly as GRUB but certainly helps since it’s all that they got on PPC. (big hint – if you’re snatching a hard drive from a previously Windows PC, format that sucker and restructure the MBR for the mac to read it, or else you’ll have a functioning system that won’t boot. google hid that one from me for a while)
