ParticipantSo how exactly are you guys going to host this? The closest server location is Atlanta and the 20 hop lag on that wouldn’t be ideal for a LAN.

I can talk to the DDD guys and see if they will lock the server for us. If not, up to the executives. lol

ParticipantThe whole point of a LAN is to play on locally hosted servers <_>
As much as I like BFBC2 and as epic a LAN game it could be, it really shouldn’t even be an option since DICE doesn’t allow local or privately owned dedicated servers.
Below are the metrics I took from Atari BEFORE the new filter. I retested a few and the numbers are, well, terrible. Take what’s below and triple the latency and cut the bandwidth in half. Keep in mind these are raw metrics and do not take into account datacenter-induced lag, which for most gaming datacenters is an additional 20-50ms.
FROM WCU:
To Charlotte – 6ms, 47.51M down x 28.31M up
To Atlanta – 23ms, 25.32M down x 32.02M up
To New York City – 28ms, 39.82M down x 32.58M up
To Miami – 51ms, 37.49M down x 24.82M up
To Las Vegas – 72ms, 12.41M down x 19.52M up
To Aberdeen – 121ms, 7.70M down x 3.87M up
To Paris – 111ms, 10.47M down x 11.26M up
To Frankfurt – 125ms, 8.92M down x 4.64M up
To Moscow – 301ms, 5.33M down x 2.13M up
To Sydney – 472ms, 3.05M down x .75M up
Remember ping = x3 and BW = x .5
I smell another cancelled tournament

ParticipantI can enable the bfbc2 server in Atlanta or in Virginia. Tell me where you want it. You should make it password protected or you may find outsiders joining. Up to you.
Who is your internet server provider? This may help in determining the best location for the server. Keep in mind, the EA’s Master Server is located in Virginia.
Note: no need to worry about players. If you fall short I’m sure Dustin can come on vent and get some DDD guys there

ParticipantThe school’s internet provider is NCREN, basically a dedicated OC network that interconnects almost all the K-12, community colleges, and universities in NC. WCU has a dedicated OC12 pipe that hits the normal internet in Durham.
I just tried pinging some of leetservers’ test IPs and the latency to Atlanta should be acceptable for LAN gameplay. The average was around 30ms.

Dustin FaulknerMemberthanks masterp, I don’t know much about the internet on campus besides that it was slow, i got a petition of over 50students, and bam over break the school spent over 100k$ on a package/bandwidth management machine to fix the internet. Took them a while because of the economy, but after that big letter, all those names, and a few hrs of my time, that major problem was fixed. IT is definately stepping up. Anyways, im hoping that no more problems arise for this lan. Only things i can thing atm that are problems is sponsorships, number of systems for people to play on, TRIAL PRODUCT KEYS FOR COMPUTER GAMERS, and number of compter gamers that have been approached and introduced(considering that alot stay in the rooms, sort of soloist, and play with high pride lol) =/.
I still am up for grabs for people that think they can beat me at an fps that is a console gamer. I am ready to get that remote for any of you consolers to face me ;].

ParticipantBefore my HD crashed a couple years back I had a map of the campus fiber network, pictures from all the network closets, model numbers for almost every switch and gateway on campus, and the IP assignments for all the buildings. Unfortunately I chose Maxtor for my data storage needs and, well, yeah.

Can you PM me more details on this?
And yeah, the computer gamers on campus are hard to reach. Your best bet is to plaster as many fliers as possible in the dorms, they DO have to come out of their rooms for food, booze, and classes (sometimes). Some CS majors need to come out more often for showers but that’s neither here nor there

So you think Atlanta will be better than Virginia?

ParticipantI am ready to set up the server. Please tell me how many PCs you will have at the LAN. I need to know how many slots to set up, the rotation and game type/types as well.

ParticipantYour server is up and running. Server name “WCU Gaming Club”. Filters should be set (checked) to “PunkBuster and Ranked”.
Type “WBC” in the search bar and hit Search.
There is a new PunkBuster update so be sure you manually update your game. Go to http://www.evenbalance.com/ for update details.
The server is currently set to Squad Rush- 4 vs 4. If you decide you want to increase the players, Dustin can contact me and it should only take a few minutes.
ENJOY!
