i don’t know what you people did but ever since saturday (3/15), the latency has improved enormously! my 140 ping finally returned to 60-80! w00t w00t

The cool part is we didn’t do anything to “break” or “fix” “latency” on the server. This was most likely a problem your ISP finally got around to fixing.

*edited* my ping is back to 140. i dont understand how i get a ping between 40-70 on other servers (even servers located in california; im in nyc) and i get a 140 ping in WCU…

Geographical distance doesn’t mean anything when comparing internet latency. The only time geography makes a difference is across the Atlantic (normal + 200ms) or Pacific (normal +400ms) Oceans.

I traced your IP and it appears your ISP (Time Warner) takes an extremely retarded path to WCU. Your connection goes from New York City to Chicago to Los Angeles to Durham then to WCU’s campus. I can’t say I’ve seen a connection path this retarded before but it explains why your connections in California are faster than the ones here.

No. He can call and complain but all my dealings with Time Warner about their main lines were extremely frustrating. Btw, to talk to a real person hit the 0 number 3-4 times at their main voice prompt menu.

Also, I editted my last post and included the traceroute.

I can kind of understand why they would want to setup the route that way, a lot of communication goes on between NY and LA when it comes to commercials and movie media, so they need as much bandwidth as possible to transfer media like that 400 MB/s is the minimum to safely transfer video files and not get any artifacts in the footage. Maybe that is why Time Warner has it setup like that. Oh and I too know how it is with Time Warner and trying to deal with them on the phone, but if you complain enough you’ll get your way…

I take that back, yours is the most retarded. And just to be sure it’s working right I traced my home IP back and it’s taking the route it should so

Typically complaining works. Time Warner uses default passwords on all their modems and I’ve found that being able to tell the tech the exact signal strength my modem is getting also opens their eyes. It lets them know that I know they’re BSing me. :)

Don’t get me wrong, I can understand them having a major pipeline out to California (there are several) but it doesn’t make sense to not just bounce him to through their Atlanta hub.

wtf is that ?????? while sticky had a reason for his weird run to california, i want to know wtf my isp provider is doing/thinking.

I dont understand that picture fully, is it starting in raleigh going to miami then coming all the way back to raleigh then bouncing around nc, then going to sc, hittting georgia then back to durham nc then to wcu.

    wtf

I believe your IP had already cycled as you don’t live anywhere near where I traced your IP to. You probably still go to New York first though.

The program is no longer available for download as it was bought by a major vendor a few years back. As in 6 years back.

I traced yours back and followed it node by node and I can’t tell you wtf is going on. It DOES go from Raleigh to Miami and back to Raleigh and then follows the path you mentioned.

Hey, packets need some fun in the sun.

Just the facts. ISPs don’t care what you think unless you are renting a big pipe from them then they care in a proportional amount to the size of the pipe.

Most of it i really dont care about its the whole its going in a straight line to MIAMI then coming straight back to RALEIGH, its not even like maimi is central hub that then sends it somewhere across the country it is just sending it back to where it got it.

O well wish me luck ill be giving them a call sometime in the next week.

You may be switching between pipelines. Miami has some a big ISPs that route stuff through there.
