ParticipantDoes anyone know any good vista tweaks to get a better framerate at CS:S…
I have 2 gigs of ram.. vista is using up half of that…. i have a 2.4ghz dual core processor..
i was thinking it had something to do with the processor… since when i change the resolution it seems to have no effect at all on the framerate… I guess that may sound dumb.. but well it’s what’s going on..
there’s like 80 processes running in the task manager.. wtf? it came like this.. and no stupid ad software either.. just windows being evil.. mojave my *edited*

ParticipantDo a search on unneeded vista services and turn those off. That’s about it.

ParticipantYou may have some malware running in the background. Even with all my G15 applets and a few chrome windows open I only have 67 processes. What kind of graphics card do you have?

Participantyea, i just started up and i’ve only got 61 processes. vista is very heavy, but not THAT heavy. not to mention, you only have 2 gigs of RAM. 3 gigs is the recommendation i think.

ParticipantWith CSS, IE, MSN, AIM, Xfire, Steam, Outlook, Virtual PC, Daemon tools, Windows Onecare, and WCU’s faculty/staff VPN tunnel tool running I’m at 64 processes. You’ve got garbage running you don’t need and it isn’t Vista’s fault at all.
What’s your framerate NOW?
What processor do you have?
What TYPE of ram do you have?
What video card do you have?

Participantwell i’m not expecting the world.. but i expected it to run better than my old laptop that was 5 years old and it can’t even do that…
it is a laptop.. and here are the stats again
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (2.40GHz, 3M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
2.0GB, DDR2-800 SDRAM, 1 DIMM
NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M
160GB Hard Drive, 7200RPM with Free Fall Sensor
15.4″ UltraSharp™ Widescreen WUXGA (1920×1200) Display-Brushed Metal Black
Genuine Windows Vista® Business SP1, With media
Dell Slim 65W Auto/Air/AC Adapter
8X DVD+/-RW w/Roxio and Cyberlink Power DVD™
Intel® WiFi Link 5100 802.11a/g/n Draft Mini Card
Intel vPro™ Technology’s advanced management features
Resource DVD – Contains Diagnostics and Drivers
9 Cell Battery
anyways.. when i started it up it asked my why i didn’t connect the 90 w psu that came with it.. but it only came with the 65 w psu???
also it has lots of dell programs on there for the hot keys and etc
the gfx is a nvidia quadro nvs 160M with 256mb on the card… it’s no high end card by any means.. but seriously
i get 40 FPS at the most
I seriously think I’m about to install xp over it…

ParticipantThat won’t really help. I would watch your memory usage and see what its doing.

That’s a decent WORK laptop. By no means is it anywhere near good for gaming no matter what OS you put on it. Below is a link to your video card stats. It should play the game fine on a decent resolution but I wouldn’t go above 1440×900 in CSS and would consider going down to 1024×768 if need be.

If it came from the factory with the wrong power adapter that’s something that should have been dealt with after the first power on. Having a lesser power adapter will reduce the overall effectiveness of the laptop, either lowering the clocks on your processor and video card or making it so you can’t charge the battery and use the laptop at the same time.

also it has lots of dell programs on there for the hot keys and etcCut them off. Start-msconfig. At the services tab check the “Hide all Microsoft” box and close what you don’t want/need. On the startups do the same but be mindful as the sidebar and a few other useful MS programs are there as “Windows Vista”.

Quadro cards have never been built for gaming and tbh I’m surprised they’d put one in a laptop. The stats on the page I linked to above are well below what I consider decent by modern standards.

I seriously think I’m about to install xp over it…By all means but keep in mind if it came with Vista you probably won’t get XP drivers. Oh btw, it won’t get much faster than it is already. If you want to reinstall, reinstall Vista with a non-Dell DVD and use your existing serial. I think you’ll find that Dell shipped the laptop with too much bloatware, which has nothing to do with how fast Vista should be running on it.

ParticipantSounds like you have sort of the same issue I have, but mine is 100 times worse than yours since my lappy isn’t even close to being a gaming lap. But I use this auto exec config made for low end computers and it is the only way I am able to play.

It turns stuff way down, but its not too too bad to play with…maybe give it a go? Couldn’t hurt I don’t think…

hmm.. looks like lemm is going to suck from now on… maybe when i get some money i’ll spend like 200 dollars and get a new psu and vid card for my old box… that’s a lot of money just to play css though

ParticipantThe geforce nvs160m == geforce 9400; which is meant for lowend gaming no matter how you look at it. look at running 1280×800 at medium settings, no AA/AF
September 14, 2008 at 5:14 pm #56435MasterP
ParticipantBtw, lower-end gaming laptops can still win at LANs. Took mine to ASU and well, yeah.

ParticipantMy graphics card is an Invidia GeForce GO 6150….suck it…try gaming on this…

Participanti’ve got a 7950, i do alright… i thought that cs was more processor heavy anyways?
like yahoo, i use a config that reduces the settings so the fps is higher, i hover around 80-90 fps now…

yeah i’m thinking i’m just gonna have to order a new psu.. this 65watt is prolly killing my performance… it’s supposed to have a 90 watt… that should boost it decently..
i mean come on .. it’s *edited*ing css… I swear my 5 year old laptop that the screen just died on could play better than this thing… its gotta be that the system is slower because of the reduced power.. i mean it even told me that the system is slower…
is there any way to tell exactly what it reduced the clock speed etc to?
EDIT: also lemm is not an idiot.. i reduced everything down low the day i got it and to 1024 X 768.. i also reduced the dx level from 9.0 to 8.1.. that gave me a slight increase in fps
September 15, 2008 at 3:42 am #56560Lemm
Participantok… this has got to be it..
I went into the BIOS and here is what it said about the clock speed:
Current Speed: 1.2 GHz
Minimum Speed: 1.6 GHz
Maximum Speed: 2.4 GHz
I’m thinking it’s all the power supply.. tomorrow I’m going to call up dell and talk to some kind of rep.
September 15, 2008 at 8:31 am #56564Nickname
Participantoh yeah i sisnt realize that you weren’t using the normal power supply!
Dell makes it so the video card remains in the lowest clocked mode if you aren’t using the normal power supply…
September 15, 2008 at 3:10 pm #56662Lemm
Participantalso.. when I run the computer on battery power high performance it gives me the full thing and i was getting over 100 fps on source earlier…
stupid power supply..
