Participantok so i need some clarification, i have searched about doing this upgrade and i keep seeing different responses.
I know my system supports 64bit vista. I currently have vista 32 bit premium. So does my product key work for upgrading to 64 bit at no cost? Also since it is OEM vista do I need to contact dell for the 64 bit cd?

ParticipantYou can’t upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit, you’d have to do a fresh install.
As for keys, I’m not sure on Home Premium. I know the keys for Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate are universal but I’m not sure on HPrem.
If you come to the LAN I can give you a 64-bit DVD to try it with, you can find out before deleting anything.

Is it a retail copy or one from dell?It doesn’t matter, with Vista the generic retail DVD also works with OEM keys. It’s a retail that we’ve used on Dell laptops before.

ParticipantThey keys are generic and will work for either 32 or 64 bit versions. You’re supposed to contact your product vendor for the alternate disc. I’m sure there are about 200 people at the LAN that can get you a 64 bit disk.

ParticipantJust seems that all the responses that I have read from peeps are that the key only works if you have the OEM disk and not retail

I’d have to give you login info and well, sorry Dice.
I do however have a XP Home image I can burn for you at the LAN. It’s SP2 but you can do a repair install over SP3 and then update it like normal. Process is un-nerving but actually works pretty good.

ParticipantAMerrill; the disk MasterP is talking about we use at the CRIB all the time to do OEM installs. I promise it will work.

ParticipantThanks!
I just got an email this morning from dell telling me the disk is on its way and I will have it in 3-5 at no charge. So apparently my key will work just fine and at least I’ll have a disk of my own in case I need it in the future.
