I want to know if there is any freeware, shareware, open source, or pay for programs that will let me upconvert my .mp3 files. Right now I’m burning files at 192kbps onto a cd and then ripping that cd at 320kbps. I know its not true sounding 320bit-rate but it still sounds a hell of a lot better than the original track that is below 200kbps. HELP! :)

You can’t get more out of audio than you started with. Increases in quality are in your imagination only.

my thoughts are that you can get no more authentic with it than what you currently have, but you can definitely go through and add in detail to what you have, which is where upconverting enters the game. This is the same for pictures, music, rendering lines in-game, etc.

Not even when the songs were converted from flac to .mp3 at 128kbps 😕

I am no genius but let’s think about this logically, shall we? You have a cd of perfect quality. You put it to mp3 form at 128 kBPS and shrink the quality. Then when you blow up the file again to full size would you expect to have full quality again? NO. It is the same with a picture on your computer. You can click and drag and make it bigger but in turn you are just filling the space with duplicate pixels. Upconverting, IMHO simply fills in the missing spots with duplicate data.

To prevent EE lecture on this please accept that you can’t upconvert with digital formats.

If it was an analog original you might could get more out of it but once you go digital you’re stuck with what you’ve got.
