ParticipantWell, I’ve come to the place where I always come for computer help: YOU GUYS!
I just got fios at my house and I thought that the only thing that will make me happier than just having Fios is having a tv tuner card (with HD, of course). Then I thought to myself. I was like self, you know NOTHING about tv tuner cards. This is where you all come in! Meet Newegg’s tv tuner cards:

I know nothing. I do know, though, that I want a remote to come with it (because that just makes sense!). Who can give me advice! I want it to support all HD and digital channels (as well as analog). Let me know and post any helpful info.

ParticipantMy knowledge about TV tuners is admittedly limited, but I do know you want to make sure your tuner is compatible with window media center. I bought a cheap one a couple years ago and it wasnt and the included software sucked bad.

Get over VLC, it’s terrible.
I highly recommend Avermedia. They made the first real TV interface cards and still make rock solid products.

This is one of their higher end models but it comes with a remote and the reviews say it interfaces directly with the windows media center. Idk how well it works as a DVR, it’s usually a hit or miss feature with TV tuner cards.

ParticipantHeh, this thread can easily start an argument about media players but lets keep it all about me!

It’s terrible. I’d go so far to say I’d rather use Quicktime but it’s still better than Realmedia. For as much time and effort has been put into it’s compatibility it looks like a 5 year old coded the user interface.

ParticipantHeh, I can shape my price range around the proper product to get (meaning I can wait longer to buy it if needed)

Participantthough these may or may not be on the list, some cards I do know from past first-hand experience:
ATI TV Wonder Pro PCI- decent card, receives analog tv signals (mine was manufactured pre-DTV), no idea of HD capabilities, accepts 1 COAX cable input (raw cable, if your provider doesn’t encrypt or scramble their signal; analog antenna; RF out from vcr’s, game systems, dvd players, cable/satellite boxes); 1 S-VIDEO input (s-video out from vcr’s, game systems, dvd players, cable/satellite boxes, cameras, camcorders); 1 COMPOSITE input (yellow, red+white cables – composite out from vcr’s, game systems, dvd players, cable/satellite boxes, cameras, camcorders). no component hookup. (audio from s-video and composite hookups are mutually exclusive). Drivers only compatible with 32-bit Windows XP or better (no 64-bit). open source driver support in *nix OS’es. still functions. Windows use presents considerable delay, near impossible to game through. *nix platforms – perfection, no delay.
ATI TV Wonder Pro 650 (pci slot)- undetermined card quality – driver incompatibilities with the system I had running at the time. Receives analog and digital tv signals, box claims HD support, accepts 2 COAX cable input (see above for this and all other descriptions); 1 S-VIDEO input; 1 COMPOSITE input. no component hookup. (audio from s-video and composite hookups are mutually exclusive). Drivers not compatible with 64-bit Windows Vista, OEM software install failed on 32-bit Windows Vista. No idea if it has media center compatibility, I was running Vista Business. last I checked (while back) no open source driver support in *nix OS’es. At the time (>1 year ago) I could not get the thing to work, and ATI said my platform (32- and 64-bit Vista) was currently unsupported. returned to store for a full refund.
neither came with remote in the box, but one was available for purchase through ATI or online retailers. Would also probably accept any generic media pc remote.

ParticipantHeh, these are the mixed reviews I have read about at newegg. There is no card that blows the rest away. IT seems everyone has problems with these cards and that no card is perfect. That makes the decision much harder!

ParticipantATI is too busy trying to keep up with Nvidia to properly support their other card lines. Best to stick with a company that only cares about what you’re buying.
