ParticipantPlease post any comments here about how I ran the tournament so i know what went well and what I need to do better next time.

Participant1) make sure maps are on the server beforehand and it is configured correctly (respawn timers)
2) have a game plan in place in case of stalemate
3) make sure the tournament is scheduled with adequate time allotted
4) maybe a better bracket system (double elimination with 15 minute rounds?)

Participant1. I will make sure of this next time, although i dont think we will be using steamroll anymore…
2. ok, i’m thinking in case of a stalemate, it goes to a coin toss and the winner gets to pick which map we play.
3. 2 1/2 hrs seem ok? because its gonna take way more time than either COD4 or CS:S
4. brackets go as follows, 1v4 and 2v3, winner moves on and losers play each other for third place, the winners play for second and first. and if we have more teams, it’ll take a little time to figure that out.

Participanti though i knew the settings, but was crazy confused on mach and steamroll.
for next time need to discuss how a team wins. if we arnt playing to 3 caps, why is the win limit set to 3?
and it was never clear when the game went live. need to have a set person say live. and when they say live its live no matter what.
maybe look into match configs, where each team can “set to ready” and it auto lives.
all in all, good job. i was crazy suprized how fair the teams were. by far the best so far. :king_right:

Participantyeah, i’m gonna have to think up what to do if that ever happens again, double stalemate, wow…

ParticipantSteamroll was a terrible idea, never do that as a final map, ever…
I got 0 satisfaction out of the fact that we won because it didn’t feel like a win against the other team. It was a cluster… 2fort would have been a much better final map than steamroll..
Stalemates aren’t complicated, in the case of a stalemate a map like Steamroll would be fine imo.
OR do what I would have done and place 5 on 5 scouts on granary and first team to win, wins
. Great stalemate breaker, did this in a tournament once.Play to 3 caps / rounds or until time runs out. No reason we should play to 1…
Play at least 1 of the classic ctf maps. Just because you personally don’t enjoy a map doesn’t mean others hate it.
If we need to shorten the length of the tournament then do 15 – 20 minute rounds instead of 30 minute rounds.
Warmup map = 15 minutes no matter what and should be set to one of the maps we are playing in the tournament. Preferably the map that will be played as the first tournament map. This gives teams a chance to play together before it being real.
Announce what is going on. Don’t depend on someone else to tell you what to do ‘during the LAN.’ Everything should be sorted out before the LAN event. Have the random generator ready. Have the maps configured properly and ready to play. Listen to the community.
The medic gun that gives life is a fantastic weapon and isn’t imbalanced. The backburner was nerfed and seems balanced but that’s debatable. The decision on what weapons are allowed needs to be made soon so that people can work on getting their unlocks. If a person doesn’t have the unlock then it will be their own fault. I believe it is fair to announce something 2 months in advance so that people can prepare.
Overall I had fun. I would like to suggest that TF2 players have the option to pick a person they would like to play with. Naturally that will cause some problems with ‘numbers’ but its worth exploring. Everyone likes to play with at least one of their friends. For 2 LANs I didn’t get to play with my friends at all so I am making this suggestion because I know how much it sucks playing with a bunch of random people. Like I said there is a numbering issue as far as teams go with this approach.
Also, I say one LAN we try 2 teams of 10. Top 5 from each team advance, the team that wins, wins. This would give the first round more of a epic feel. Just an idea.

ParticipantWell actually, most of the people in the club dislike 2(turtle)fort…
anyway…
I originally planned to have 3 rounds on steamroll but the higher ups pushed it along after the first round for the sake of time.
i allowed the sandvich and the kritzkrieg, but banned eveything else, so no complaint there…
bitey announced over the intercom when the maps went live and I went over the rules and maps before we started the tournament.
I feel the coin toss thing might be a good idea, and it would be faster too, as for stalemates, I think the first to cap the middle point on granary was a pretty good idea.

ParticipantWe don’t need a coin toss for anything. Everything should be accounted for and announced/planned before the LAN starts. It should also be clearly announced during the LAN. Coin toss is just a way of not ‘planning.’ Nothing in the TF2 tournament requires a decision be made last second and so a coin toss is unnecessary.
2fort is only a turtle map on pubs that have more than 8 players per team. If your in a tournament its usually attack – defend – attack – defend until someone finally either out plays or out smarts the other team. I love the matches where one team touch walks the intel all the way to their base… It’s always an epic battle!
It is very hard to turtle with only 1 engineer/demo on that map. We’ve played it in 3 / 4 (I think?) LAN tournaments so far. Spawn to flag room takes about the same amount of time as Turbine unless you go sewers.
We could always do either cp_well or ctf_well since well is also a classic map that requires good teamwork to pull off. However that map tends to be stalemate prone. I love it but with a proper defense it is hard to get the intel.
I was thinking that maybe the warm up could be 10 on 10 Gravelpit? Since everyone seems to be against my suggestion to tournament that map
.If we were to tournament it, we would need to open up 3 classes to 2 per team for that map. Engineer, Scout, and Soldier. Two rounds, max 15 minutes each round, if there is a stalemate refer to tiebreaker rules. Honestly I think it would be a blast and a good change of pace from other LANs tournaments we’ve had.
I’m not sure if you are saying ‘no argument there’ in regards to weapon unlocks means that I have no argument or you agree. However, if it is the former then I will say that you are quite mistaken. My argument is valid and I have yet to see a good reason for banning any unlocks. This isn’t to say there aren’t any reasons. The only good argument I can think of is that not everyone will have the unlocks. The problem with that is that everyone can get the unlocks if they try and they have 2 months to do so
. My point was that the medic syringe gun and backburner should be allowed. The two weapons balance each other out. If were going to ‘ban’ unlocks then we need good reasons with references to back up those reasons. Just saying ‘those weapons are banned’ isn’t a good reason. In regards to announcements, we didn’t know the number of rounds for each map, the time limit, wtf steamroll was doing as the final map, what maps we were going to play, etc…
The tournament itself was not run well. I never even heard the rules announced and it took way too long randomly generate teams. The TF2 tournament, at most, should take 2 hours. These are things that should go quickly and smoothly. There was a lot of wasted time during this tournament because of misinformation. You were not organized and I have about ten people from that tournament who agree. Steamroll was an awful map choice for the final round, whether it was 1 round or 3 rounds it is still horrible for a final round. If everything was announced clearly then why was there so much confusion throughout the tournament?
Team Generation (5 or 10 mins), Team Collaboration (5 mins), Warmup map (15 or 30 mins), first round (15 or 30mins), final round (30 mins). 15 Minutes allowed for stalemate situations.
Total: 2 hours.
This gives room for error in that we can shorten or extend map time based on how much time has been wasted.
This criticism is here to help improve the LAN and based on what I have heard people complain about both during and after the LAN.

ParticipantApologies, but it was my first attempt at a tournament, so lets turn this into a learning experience shall we?

ParticipantI think my last post came off a bit edgy, sorry about that, I woke up at 7am >.<
At any rate, you didn’t do a ‘bad’ job. I merely wanted to point out the flaws that I saw and think we should work on. You did fine for your first time.
