ParticipantThis shouldn’t surprise anyone. Gamestop has always been about the bottom line and has a long history of screwing over gamers to improve it.

ParticipantThat’s gotta be some kind of illegal.
Hopefully people know not to buy the game at gamestop!

ParticipantWhen you buy something, it’s your job as a consumer to inspect the item prior to purchase. If the item has been opened and there is evidence of it or a notice has been posted then you have no legal leg to stand on. However, if Gamestop is re-sealing the packages in a manner that leaves the average consumer unaware that the item has been tamperedwith and doesn’t inform the customer in any way then yes it most certainly IS illegal and they can at the very least be sued over it. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone couldn’t be arrested for ordering employees to do it. That’s so sketchy as hell there has to be a law against it.
That’s like you buying a deluxe or gold edition of a game and getting home to discover that the bundled expansions were removed by the retailer. You bought the game as a whole, not the game as the retailer thinks it should be sold.

This. We do not live in a caveat emptor society.

ParticipantAnd yet no one bothers to blame Square for not informing GameStop that they were including a coupon for a competitor’s service…. GameStop was trying to preserve its own interests since it is attempting to launch its own digital gaming streaming service (Impulse). If a vendor was giving out coupons for a competitor’s service/store in your establishment, wouldn’t you do something about it to prevent losing business? I don’t blame them for doing something about it; however, it could’ve been handled loads better.
I’ll admit, it was shady for both parties involved, but at least GameStop made up for it to those who purchased the game on PC. They provided a buy 2 get 1 free coupon and I think at least a $50 gift card.

ParticipantI have no problems with them doing it, because you’re right about the competiting service, but boxing the game back up and selling it as though nothing happened is where I draw the line in terms of decency. Once something like that becomes acceptable there’s no limit to what retailers will do. One day you’ll find yourself opening the box before you leave the store just to verify that you get everything.

You should do this anyways. People are notorious for opening boxes and pulling *edited* out they need. It’s not necessarily bad for games (until now) but I’d still rather know I’m getting what I pay for *before* I walk out the door. I have a lot more arguing power that way.

Participant+1 to Kuros.
That and try to find a good Gamestop if you have the option. There’s 5 here in Winston.. and I’ve seen other cities with multiples stores available. So if you have bad experiences with management/staff switch stores until you find a good one. Figure out who the good GAs (who know their stuff and can avoid problems from the get go) as well as the good management staff (SGA/ASM/SM). I highly doubt a store has ALL bad employees and all levels, but can definitely have a few bad eggs to really ruin your experiences.

ParticipantI haven’t shopped at Gamestop since I caught them ignoring carding rules. That decision has saved me a number of headaches over the years.
