i was going with this thought process
for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction thusly the force on the bullet is the same as the force on the gun, but in an opposite direction

The acceleration is the same. However, the gun is much heavier so it slows down much more rapidly than the bullet. That’s your ‘kick’.
