ParticipantI just don’t like people telling me what to do is all, but let’s just give this a shot and see how it works ok?
November 6, 2008 at 4:05 pm #62201Kappamerc
ParticipantHaha yeah I planned on it man… All I was doing was trolling you. I mean a little bit of what I said I care about but 95% was troll.
Like, I totally think we need a sweet 10 on 10 warmup round with no restrictions for ‘fun.’

ParticipantNo opposition there, but man you’re a good troll…. although it’s not hard for people to get under my skin…

ParticipantSo could you summarize this entire flamewar up in a single post.
Btw, 10 minute rounds with an engineer ban is 100% fail. If you don’t know how to kill a turret gtfo my game and go play BF2.
Dice, the teams WERE NOT balanced last time. One team was extremely stacked and when confronted about it Rydell said it was ok. We did non-sanctioned trades without telling Rydell to balance it out. How it went last time was NOT good by any stretch of even your imagination.

The Maps we used last time were ctf_mach4 and ctf_turbine, but I will add in ctf_2fort with no Engineers allowed*edited* that. Engineers are a class designed into the game. I love playing engineer, especially on 2fort. Dont make bull*edited* rules. If you cant handle engineers go cry and uninstall.
November 7, 2008 at 7:26 am #62295Rydell382
ParticipantOk then I won’t ban engies, but there will still be a limit of one per class per team.
November 7, 2008 at 8:09 am #62298Kappamerc
ParticipantI wish we could get 24 or 32 people playing… I really want 6on6 or 8on8… It makes the game so much more interesting.
Also, since we do random teams isn’t it a bit unfair to say 1 of each class? What if 2 really good soldiers get randomly placed on the same team? 1 player is forced into playing at less of his potential. This also limits class mix strategy a ton. There are some class that you don’t want stacked but 1 for every class is extremely low for TF2 tournament standards.
A good limit structure would be something like this:
2 – Soldiers
2 – Scouts
2 – Pyros
2 – Sniper
1 – Medic
1 – Heavy
1 – Spy
1 – Demoman
1 – Engineer
The specific classes that really need limits are scouts, engineers, and medics. In tournaments each team typically has to have the same amount of medics to stay on even ground. Most people limit that class.
Also, what is the reasoning behind each of the weapon unlock bans specifically? For instance, if the reasoning is balance to gameplay, what about the weapon is imbalanced and are there any discussions online where I read about the imbalance. I know the pyro unlock lost its +150hp buff and feels very balanced now. The medic weapons seem to be well balanced as well.
Just a thought.

Participantwell with so few people on a team, it helps to prevent turtling. If we get more than 5 people per team, I will relax the limits a little.

The only team that was screaming yes was the one with 4 really good players on it. Mike can tell you I DID complain and it WAS ignored. Notice the whole tie thing, yeah if we hadn’t swapped players off the stage there wouldn’t have been any ties.

whats your MasterP(lan)?Run it like it was when Shane was here. I don’t seem to remember any drama around it back then, might have something to do with the fact they always turned out well.
November 7, 2008 at 3:36 pm #62353Kappamerc
ParticipantActually I complained that my team was horrible for two lans straight and nothing happened. In fact I was put on a good team both of those times and then switched to an absolutely horrible team, both of those LANs. If you are gonna promote random teams, expect to be put on a *edited*ty team that will frustrate the crap out of you. Just like the CSS team balancer, teams will never be balanced, no matter how hard you try. The intention is sound but the method fails and frustrates many.
Someone always gets screwed.
I personally am not a believer in the ‘no crappy player left behind’ mentality but to each his own
. (That means I don’t support attempts at balance because they always fail). One cannot quantify that which is subjective. Skill is subjective to a large degree. You might know who the best player is but you typically have an extremely hard time in picking 5 people for 4 different teams and making sure their skill levels add up to match the other 3 teams skill levels (or whatever one wants to use to quantify it).
It is the really terrible —> average player skill levels that are impossible to determine. People get lucky, people have off days, people have on days, some are just absolutely bad at games. Balance cannot be achieved when you are basing it on skill. At the very least there will never be 4 even teams.
One cannot quantify that which is subjective.
You had a bad team last LAN. I had a bad team the two before that and nobody was willing to join my team to help me out. That is the way of the forced random selection.

ParticipantAlso, I would like for Chupa and I to be able to play together. Regardless of who else is on my team, he is a very good friend and I ‘have fun’ playing games with him.
If people can’t pick a full team, at least let them pick one friend to play with. As others have said, it is about having fun. I have fun when I play with my friends
. Chupa and I pretty much only play TF2 at the LAN so it isn’t like we ‘practice’ together or anything! This would make me happy
. Even if I was on the most fail of teams, I would probably still have fun lol.November 7, 2008 at 3:44 pm #62356Rydell382
ParticipantI’ll see what I can do, if teams need balancing, you will be the first priority, fair enough?
November 7, 2008 at 4:57 pm #62372Bitey
ParticipantLol when Shane ran it? I remember teams even being screwy then, no one stepped and said anything though…. hmm wonder why that was…

The problem back then was we had lots of good people, probably half the players were good to very good and now we have about 1/4 that are really good and the rest are *edited* poor to decent.
Did you even play TF2 back then Bitey?

ParticipantI have been saying it forever; we need gym-class style team picking. That way people can be on teams with friends and overall the teams would be mostly balanced. Sorry if you get picked last, but if you do, you probably already know you are terrible.

if the best players are captions then the best players wont be on the same team,, making it allready better than the last few times

Chupas specialty is COD4 so I think we’d be safe there xD.
November 7, 2008 at 5:55 pm #62388Rydell382
ParticipantQuestion is, how do we determine the “best players”?
November 7, 2008 at 5:59 pm #62391Kappamerc
ParticipantMake me a list of the players and I can point them out in a heartbeat. The trick is, if they are new we can’t know.
November 7, 2008 at 5:59 pm #62392Kappamerc
ParticipantBut 4 teams means 4 players are choosing the teams. It isn’t hard to pick 4 really good TF2 players.
November 7, 2008 at 6:03 pm #62394Rydell382
ParticipantHave you played with me though? I’m actually pretty good.
But still, is there a way to pick some with 0% chance of bias (i’m not accusing you or anything)
November 7, 2008 at 6:17 pm #62396Bitey
ParticipantI bought the game about a week after it came out, wish we still had SS of the games we played I had pretty good scores, nothing compared to Shane or maybe even you, but I certainly gave Kappa a run for his money.
