ParticipantThese are the things i’ve been trying to get done on the server but I don’t have access implement any of it. Without the ability to actually do anything to the server and not really having contact with people who have the time to work on the server, I cannot control the population of the server.
It isn’t that I haven’t put time into populating it. It is that I don’t have the right to do anything besides post here and hope that something changes.
I’d like to have certain options that beetles mod provides. I really don’t want the whole thing because I’m sure what you have been working on is awesome.
1. At the start of the Sudden Death Round:
a. Force Melee
b. Randomly select a class and force every player to play that class.
(Beetles mod does this and I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to code it into your mod without the use of BM junk).
2. Respawn times 8-12 seconds
3. Map Times should be 20 minutes, 15 minute extend, max extend 2 times.
4. Rotation based on voting, can’t vote the map last played.
5. (Optional – Would be nice) WCU logo in spawn rooms. (I did this with the beetles mod, it didn’t require a map edit as far as I know, it was simply placing a logo in a images folder and using the beetles admin commands in game to place where I wanted the logos to appear).
-The reason I want the logos is for our University advertisement. The overall idea seems to fit with our clubs mission.
Maps that need to be on the server and in vote or regular rotation:
I need these maps on the TF2 server.
ctf_turbine_v3
ctf_mach4
cp_warpath
cp_dustbowl
cp_gravelpit
ctf_2fort
cp_labor
ctf_well
cp_well
cp_castle3
Anything that isn’t an Original map or isn’t on the above list, should be removed. I’m open to map suggestions, just PM me any suggestions you have for maps.
Liam, give me some feedback on my above suggestions. PM me or what not. Thanks for all the effort your putting into this. If you need my help on anything just let me know.

ParticipantVoting really cannot work with the way TF2 is setup now with mani; after 3-4 seconds, the voting window goes away (its a glitch with the TF2 code, NOT mani), so we are better off using a (GOOD) rotation. I think we have good maps listed (heck, I chose them!) but I think we need to work on a better order for the rotation.
Another issue we have to address is the problem the server has where after every steam update, mani and hlstats break and the rotation breaks. Basically our server gets put back to default settings, which are less than optimal. There may be ways to fix this (google), I read somewhere about making files read only for example to try and combat them from being overridden.
What I am saying is before we even implement some of the changes kappa suggested, we need to make our server stable and user friendly to play on, then we can worry about stuff like forced melee, WCU logos, etc.

ParticipantAs far as maps are concerned, I talked to many people (Shane, chupa, nukedude, nickname, personal friends, etc…) who play TF2 regularly as well as played on each map before deciding on those maps. It was a community effort.
I talked to Bitey about the maps on the server and how to make the server more appealing to outside players, this has been a work in semi-progress since I became TF2 CL. Can’t solve problems when you don’t get feedback or results from possible solution suggestions.
Mani is the only mod that I’ve read about where the menu’s disappear after 5 seconds. I have read the Source Mod and Beetle(shudder) both have menus that stay up. Obviously the forums I was frequenting could have been mistaken but I thought I’d just bring that up.
If it has to go to rotation then that is easy enough to setup.
The stability of our server is always our #1 concern. There have been many problems with HLstats beyond simply being broken after a patch. The main problem was not having a separate port to use HLstats for TF2, sharing a port with CSS causes problems. Speaking of which, I need to ask Liam whether or not that problem ever got solved.
During the last LAN event Liam and I discussed many things about the server. We talked about why it kept breaking and ways in which we could overcome this issue. Some of which were the read-only suggestions. I do not know the status of anything we discussed at the LAN event and am awaiting a response from someone with access to our server. Liam is busy and I realize this. However, I simply have no other options of accessing the TF2 server. At the very list no other options have been presented to me when I have inquired about such things.
The team behind TF2 is currently in the process of implementing a way to make it easier to change the respawn times. Hopefully this will make it easier to control that aspect. For many TF2 pub players respawn times are a huge deal.
Contrary to what some believe, I have tried to get our server configured properly and populated. I do not appreciate people making false accusations without actually sitting down and talking to me. 5 words exchanged in passing isn’t talking. The evidence is all over these forums, the fact that I have a server setup on one of my PCs at my house, and all the talks that I have had with many of our members and many people that I’ve met in other TF2 servers.
I don’t have the resources to directly make the changes because I am not an Admin of the server, which is understandable as long as someone with access is at least trying the suggestions that myself and others within the TF2 community have made. We all want the same thing — a stable, fun, and populated TF2 server.
Placing blame on someone who doesn’t even have access to make changes to the server seems pointless. It isn’t one person’s fault that the server isn’t configured. It is the fault of many. For one we haven’t properly trained people to actually access and change settings within the server. Hence why we have Liam taking the brunt of the work load, and the others that do know how to do things have more pressing real life matters to attend to.
I have read pages upon pages about server configurations and ripped my brain apart trying to configure HLstatsX on my own server. I have successfully implemented a ton of things to my TF2 server, but I have a lot more to learn.
Please don’t tell me that I have been wasting my time these past months when I have actually put a lot of time into my own self knowledge in order to better support our TF2 server.
I am trying to learn everything I can, on my own, as fast as possible so that I can earn the trust to have admin access or at the very least give better suggestions for TF2 server configuration. The simple fact is there isn’t anyone with the time to actually answer questions or help guide those of us who are trying to run servers to actually do so autonomously. Regardless, that isn’t an excuse, I need to know server configuration and I will continue to read up and stay informed.
To Be Continued…

ParticipantWith as much coding as I’ve done on the Source and Orange Box codebases I can tell you that it IS a bug with the OB code that makes the menus vanish.
The only reason those other mods keep the menus up is because they spam the server with menu requests. That is BAD.
-.-
Its a hackish workaround and places unnecessary memory demands on the server. Mani did it right. Don’t trash him for that. -.-
As for the plugins breaking. I’ve got a fix for that I’m going to put on as soon as I get with Bitey.
The other stuff we can talk about.
HLStats doesn’t break. Only the plugin that broadcasts the stuff to the game breaks. It still records your points.

ParticipantBy break i meant not visible.
I never read that about the spam from the other mods, good to know!
Either way, talk to nickname, hes your new TF2 guy.
All I ask is that next time take the extra 10 minutes to let the guy working his *edited* off to get this tf2 server off the ground to defend himself before assuming he ‘does nothing.’ It hurts when you don’t even get that small decency. Even if I was voted out after waiting 10 minutes, I deserved the right to defend myself. I was there at 10:03…
I seriously can’t believe it happened this way.

ParticipantKappa… I am actually somewhat speechless.
Yes at the beginning of the day I thought you might be outsed as the TF2 CL. Then when you put all those messages on the forums and contacted Bitey etc I thought you were going to get another chance. Things didn’t work out that way but it was nothing personal really. I appreciate the time you have put forward for this server but perhaps this is for the best. You seem to be busy most of the time whereas I have the extra time to work on some of these problems. Even as CL its not like I am going to shut off what you or anybody else has to say about the server, quite the opposite, I appreciate the suggestions and I agree with many of the items that you have brought forth. But in general I seem to have an easier time getting in contact with the right people to get stuff done. I certainly hope I do not let you down. I agree you deserved the right to defend yourself but things kinda just unfolded very fast. Maybe the two of us can work out some joint CL thing at least temporarily. In the end, our goals are the same as you already mentioned: to get a good working TF2 server.
Tomorrow (actually later today) I will begin scouring google for ideas to help us out. There is no reason we cannot be successful here as we have both the personnel and resources to build a successful server.
