ParticipantOkay, let me preface this by saying that I am no expert in computers. I know just enough to get by.
Now, for the last few months, I’ve been having some tech problems while playing TF2. Sometimes, my computer will throw a fit and I will be unable to move my character for about ten seconds. The world around the character will stutter and none of the buttons will work. It often gets me killed. Sometimes, my character will go immobile and by the time I regain control, I have already been killed and respawned. Some of the longer fits are accompanied by the drowning sound effect. When everything is going crazy, I usually can still hear what my teammates are saying.
Does anyone know what is going on and what I need to do in order to fix it?

ParticipantIt sounds like you are having a temporary loss of internet connection. The drowning sound is a typical sign that you have lost communication with the server. Does the upper right hand corner have “connection lost” in red when this happens?

ParticipantI’m pretty sure there are no red words in the upper-right corner. However, I can tell you that I use a wireless connection and I’m in a pretty remote location. The internet connection has been kind of flakey in the past. I’m kind of hoping it’s a connection problem and not something more along the lines of a video card problem. That would be tough to fix.

ParticipantI guarantee that is your problem. Wireless and gaming do not mix.

ParticipantNot yet, anyway.
Anytime you hear a drowning sound it’s definately connection related. Remember that the Orangebox engine is extremely unforgiving of an unstable or lossy internet connection and even a 10ms loss can take 500-2000ms to recover from. Rather than treat it as a temporary loss and readjust the game world based on data from the next server tick, as the old HL2/CSS engine did, it completely flushes the game world and redownloads the entirety of it from the server. On populated TF2 and any L4D this can take a LONG time. In L4D2 it’s not unusual for a 5-10ms server “hiccup” to take 10-15 seconds for everyone to catch up.
Are you using campus wireless? If so then yeah, that’s definately the problem. Even with 4 bars their wireless connections are unstable at best.
