Participantyeah kinda, i really really disagree with his #1… valvecon… no
like he said about another point, getting away from the fans with the mtv crap.
valve didn’t make cs, a few modders did and threw it up for the mod of the week, i know i dled it that week and have played since.
valve didn’t have much to do with cs starting up and getting rolling, honestly like it says at the end of the article it was all word of mouth and it exploded. the developers helped the map modders as much as possible and vica versa, hell i even made a map once, and through that interaction the game grew. The best thing for most people about early cs was the idea of t vs ct, and the arenas in which to get this battle going. siege, assault, militia… lots of early maps were just, hey go in this building and kill people, then came other maps docks, port, dust, where even if the objective was the same, they were balanced maps. Then vip and whatever, but the idea was that valve didn’t do anything, everytime valve released a new hl patch, servers would be down for a day or two, they’re release the cs patch and we could play again. there was one point where because of some new change cs wasn’t compatible for a week. how’s that supposed to play for gaining fans.
I know that once it got popular valve was right along side. But to say that valvecon would have had the impact that blizz or id did i don’t really agree. Yeah it would have been 8uite an event. But it was a grassroots startup.
that’s really only my big stigma as to what was in that article, it seems to me also that the guy that wrote it only has an overall limited view of the game(‘s history), 1.1 or whatever he said, sounds like he got into it in 2003 or so when it was competitive.
