ParticipantI’m looking for a hard drive to back up my work documents. Is their something out their that has some software with it that when i plug in the external HD by USB, it will detect which files it doesn’t already have? or it will look in certain folders and backup the files that are newer that have been saved over?
also any brands i should focus on, i’d rather not have my backup drive boik out on me.
PS: their a nice sale today on newegg 16cent per GB

ParticipantI really like WD and their externals are good from what I’ve heard.
As for the backup part, some externals have their own proprietary programs that back files up but to be honest I would rather write a batch file to do it.

yeah i’v been eyeballing the Western Digital My Book
do you happen know of any drives that have the autoback up feature, dice doesent do batch unless its baking cookies
googled some free 3ed party programs that sync backups, but i think i’d rather have it come with the HD so i know it works right.

ParticipantThe WD Home edition of externals comes with autobackup software but the Essential edition doesn’t say anything about it. I don’t really like using 3rd party programs but if you find one that works by all means use it.

Participanti’m using the WD mybook home edition 750gb… works really well. i haven’t even tried to find its backup software tho, from windows i just use its backup stuff to literally back up everything, and from linux i’ve about hammered out a good script for that

ParticipantI have a WD 150 GB and it works fine for me. I don’t try to auto-backup things I just drag my movies over to it and back them up manually.
